NPD Sales Results for March 2014 [Up4: FFX/X-2 HD]

So TitanFall did it's job. Sold the most games. Great game with great sales. The highest selling exclusive for any console. Beating Infamous.
Oh Titanfall sold more than 2.5 million? I'm only casually reading here, can you quote the part that specifies this?

That whole NPD argument was pretty embarrassing, but I think the worst part was seeing professional grown-ass man Ben Kuchera use "derpy" in a tweet.

I remember when I bought my console digitally. Man 3d printers have come a long way!!!

I bought Infamous: SS digitally and with preloading, he sorta has a point going forward, even if he's being an ass about it.

Yeah he is being an ass about it, but he does say that it's only good for basic hardware sales info in one of those tweets - he is ranting about software sales - and TBH that headline 28% decline is a decline in physical retail sales. It doesn't necessarily show the actual picture.

So is it finally time to accept that it's time to worry?

At this point, outside of a hefty price cut, what else can MS do?

They threw in TF, launched a huge ad campaign, the media talked about nothing but TF/X1, they issued price cuts, and they still lost. And not only that, they sold less on average. I mean, how can you not be worried?

I am honestly just shocked that PS4 beat it. Just seriously.

man, Twitter has been steady killing it lately.

so, uhhh......anyone got any Wii U/DKC:TF numbers? Tropical Freeze did relatively well last month seeing as how it was only on the market for 8 days in February. curious to see how it did in March

I can only find the following information;

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze sold "more than 130,000 combined physical and digital units" during its first eight days of release, according to Nintendo and U.S. sales data from consumer research group NPD. Tropical Freeze launched on February 21.

Nintendo 3DS software sales increased 25 percent over the same reported period last year with the launch of Bravely Default and continued success of the Pokemon X and Y series. Life-to-date, Pokemon X and Y have sold "more than 3.4 million" in the United States alone. Wii U software sales skyrocketed 180 percent over the same month last year.

http://www.joystiq.com/2014/03/13/donkey-kong-country-tropical-freeze-sales-reach-130k-in-eight-d/

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze sold 36,000 units (give or take) in its first week on the Japanese market. This we know. Media Create, however, has shared a few extra bits about the game’s sales.

Perhaps most significant, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze only sold through 35.28 percent of its initial shipment. Media Create mentions that the series is seeing a downward trend in sales. As previously mentioned, Donkey Kong Country Returns on Wii sold 163,000 units in its first week while the 3DS port sold another 104,000 units.

Aside from the Wii U’s lower installed base, why are gamers seemingly less interested? Media Create speculates that people aren’t being enticed by the new layers within Tropical Freeze. The sales tracker also cautions people to consider the heavy snow last weekend, especially in places like Tohoku and Kanto areas.

And of course, we can’t forget about what kind of title Donkey Kong is. Media Create points out that more sales will come over a longer period of time due to its evergreen nature.

I like the 1st one a bit better; it's like it has the power of levitation.

Not surprising given it's mentor, Morpheus, will be appearing in 2015 :)

I love how all of these reports say "PS4 wins despite Titanfall!"

Why not "PS4 wins with the help of Infamous"?

Well to me it's slightly disingenuous of them to use it considering who their audience is. Am I allowed to declare something 'disingenuous'? ;-)
If you click on the link in the tweet, you get this as the first sentence: http://www.polygon.com/2014/4/17/5626130/xbox-one-sales-5-million

Microsoft says it has sold more than 5 million Xbox One consoles to retailers since launch, according to an update from Yusuf Mehdi, Xbox corporate vice president of marketing, strategy and business.

Hope Microsoft has something big up their sleeve for E3. They can't afford to keep losing the US market like this. Even if it's only a small margin this month, they don't have any other markets.

I guess i'm the only one that doesn't find this all that surprising. The TF bundle was lame, PC release, 360 version down the road, and inFamous had just as much or maybe even more hype than TF. Plus all those 3rd party wins. People want the better system.

Pretty much.

As I said, I find it pretty worrying that MS didn't come out on top this month, but, as you said (and I said in the older thread), I don't find it particularly surprising. Its not like they have no competition. Or like they are doing everything right.

Now, I have to disagree with you when you say that inFamous had more/equal hype than Titanfall. In what alternative dimension is that true?

Crack open a beer guys

I'm well ahead of you buddy, got my beer ready to toast Sony.

Great for Sony, I notice MS say 5 million sold to retail, not sure if they mean sold through. probably not, but if so its not too shabby a result considering last years bullshit.

I'm bummed for Respawn. Missing out on all those potential ps4 sales :/

Well, here's to Titanfall 2. Although I have a feeling destiny will become the next big franchise instead.

You are allowed to be upset over something you misinterpret sure. Plenty of people on this board did likely based on the rep of couple writers on the site.

Titanfall bundle was $449 for most of the month.

Not good enough. That's only going to appeal to people that want that game, and people that want that game were already buying the system at $499 since November. It needs to be $399 officially. Universally, advertised, shouted from the rooftops. If it can't get there, Microsoft can forget being close to Sony, because it simply will never happen.

I definitely wasn't expecting PS4 to beat xbone this month. I guess the fact that it's the more appealing package for most people, plus wider in-store availability compared to November to February put it over the top.

It'll be interesting to see if the 5 week month was enough to keep Wii U ahead of February's 82k number. And 3DS numbers are needed.

Welp! Not only did Ms not beat Sony in their gamechanger month, but now they've gone to using shipped numbers.

I'm not so sure even ditching Kinect with a big price reduction would be enough, this was their silver bullet until the holidays.

I think I'm blind. Isn't Titanfall #1 in sales here? Why is that bad for Microsoft? @_@

As mort said a while back, a lot of fans bought Xbone in first few months knowing they are purchasing it for Titanfall. When March came, not a lot people remained and game did not have as large draw as MS wanted it to have.

So... after spending a ton on Titan fall exclusivity, marketing, delaying the 360 version, bundling Titan fall, and offering $50 off said bundle.... to end up having less console sales than your main competitor that released a game with less hype, less marketing, no bundle, and no discounts... not to mention supply issues.... yeah that's not a bad month for MS at all... I'm sure the share holders are very excited.

Is it time to shutter the XBO... probably not... but I bet their are a few more share holders voting sale now. You can never tell what MS will do they will up and abandon stuff at a drop of a hat, so it's never completely out of the question.... Sony on the other hand usually hangs onto dieing products just a bit too long in my opinion.

Can we extrapolate Xbox one WW sold through based on current NPD data?

And are we likely to get any indication of Ps4 numbers? We have Xbox one and 360, and apparently 'playstation' was the top selling platform, so if we can estimate PS3 we might be able to get an approximation of PS4?

I do not disagree. Every passing day makes Microsoft's task a little harder, as more decisions are made for PS4, and those decisions impact others' decisions, as they'll go with their friends or simply the crowd at large. So if Microsoft has a move in them, they have to make it quickly, or resign themselves to a distant second place. That's not to say they can win if they make a move, as I'm not predicting that. I think short of dropping Kinect, there's nothing they can do on price that Sony couldn't match, if they felt threatened. And Sony will have the word of mouth advantage on performance, for whatever that's worth.

I think Titan Fall was their move........

Pretty sure they expected it to be their trump card. The point in time when they would say "TF is when we turned the Xbone around".

At least they still have gears and halo.

Better games may down the road.

All this "titanfall couldn't help it" shit boggles my mind. Titanfall was never marketed as the second coming of Jesus to the gaming community. Yes there as a huge push but never to salvage Microsofts position in the industry. Let's wait to see if better games can give Microsoft the momentum it needs

Yes it was. MS and several outlets hyped the game as the revolution in FPS and gaming.

Not shocked by this outcome, the PS4 is $100 cheaper and in crazy high demand with a big exclusive release of their own. Microsoft had a decent chance to outsell Sony this month only, but I don't know why so many here thought it was an absolute lock. Could've went either way IMO.

Microsoft probably won't be winning NPD much this gen. Even if they reach price parity with PS4 there's still the power gap (superior multiplatform titles) among other things that will give the edge to Sony.

But these include unofficial price cuts that happened during the month. And it still got outsold.

Agreed, even if the XB1 was cheaper I think most people do not want to be handicapped for the rest of the generation. Today I can't see a reason to pick up the XB1 at any price. There is just no value in it at this point. Maybe in 5 years when there are a few dozen exclusives to play but not now.

311k is pretty good for march for a $500 system even if it's a hyped and bundled game.

To be fair it was $450 + bundled game (Titanfall) and some retailers were also including forza for free as well.... It was basically the same price with titanfall (if you wanted that game) as the PS4 if you were to buy everything in that bundle. It also included a free month of live. If you got the lucky and got a bundle that also included Forza it was $60 cheaper than the PS4 value wise.

They should probably just take the money loss on Kinect and leave it in. At least they will have a differentiator, if only via a few things. They can't just bring things up to par(and can never do that with specs), but they have to now bring something to the table to turn perception around. I don't think they have anything in the wings that can do that.

Basically all shipment terminology relates to "the retail channel".

When you ship something, you've "sold-in" to it.

When those retailers sell it on to consumers, you've "sold-through" it.

Product vendors only 100% their shipments into the channel, and that's also what determines how much money they get.

Selling through means that more will almost assuredly be ordered though, and if you are a platform for other things (like selling games), it's useful to know what size customer base you have.
Thanks for explaining this.

It is difficult to compare when Sony and MS don't use the same measurement though (at least that I've seen). So what we know is that PS4 has approx 7M "sold-through" and XB1 has approx 5M "sold-in"? Or do we have "sold-through" numbers for both?

quoting, pleading...

1) Microsoft released PR

2) NPD released PR, Titanfall #1 best selling for the month, #2 highest-selling Xbox One game

3) Xbox One - 5 million shipped, a lot still sitting on shelves. Contrast that with PS4 - 7 million sold to consumers, where sold and shipped are pretty much equal.

4) Arthur Gies / Ben Kuchera from Polygon question the reliability of NPD, but their claims are unfounded and completely disregard Microsoft's / Sony's / Nintendo's veneration for the numbers

5) Nintendo still hasn't released PR

6) Xbox One - 311K, down on a weekly basis from last month

7) 360 - 111K, also down from last month

8) PS4 - Highest selling console this month, ~60K higher than Xbox One according to Thuway

9) 360 is the best selling 7th-gen console, so PS3 and Wii sold below it

MrArseFace
Xbox one selling less weekly than last month, despite titanfall and price cuts, is the big news. I would expect at least a couple of big gaming sites to cover that in the next couple of days.

Right...?
