NPD Sales Results for March 2014 [Up4: FFX/X-2 HD]

What are you talking about? I'm talking about consumers benefiting from a hungry/desperate Microsoft. The Zune HD is still one of the best dedicated MP3's out there, and it's been close to three years since it was discontinued.

Beta-max was pretty freaking awesome as well!

lol, no.... Sony wont be dropping price anytime soon.

You dont sell everything you produce and drop the price... those days are gone.

XB1 had Titanfall, dropped the price to $450 for the bundle and still got outsold. XB1 doing $399 changes nothing.

If The Bone, no matter how shit it's prospects are, gets to 399 Sony will drop. Watch. This isn't PS2 style slaying we are seeing right now where it still outsold the opposition at a higher price at crazy multiples. It's still somewhat close in the US. Ideally they want to wait for the next shrink to drop but a move by MSFT will see Sony come at it head on.

Remember this is a race for online subscribers more than anything. Being petty about the hardware with a risk of losing momentum is folly.

I wonder what sales would have been if they kept their DRM policy.
Think about all of that money that they spent on that DRM and Kinect. Now, imagine if MS would have applied it to developing a high end GPU. I wonder what that would have done for sales.

thanks for the laugh
Aside from the Cranky avatar, I don't think either of those fanbases think I'm in the tank for their platform of choice. But just to try to fit in, I wonder how it would go over if I put a beanie on Detective Cranky?

sorry that you're so cheaply bought that you can't maintain an allegiance for any longer than it takes a PR lackey to paypal a tenner into your g-string.

I can confirm that PS4 sold 371K this month

Both systems doing really well in NA.

This truly is something.XB1 down 4 months in a row. Even with what has to be the most hyped and best debuting next-gen exclusive thus far (to the point of invisbilizing the 360 and pc versions in the marketing). Even with a $50 price on top of throwing in 2 extra games, really an impressive value. Not even increasing the console price up here in canada like sony, and still, it wasn't enough. IT STILL WASN'T ENOUGH. The gap is 2 million damn units. At this point what has microsoft realistically gotta do? How fast can they fire that Halo trigger? Get a new gears out there? They need something because Sony is in another zone altogether.

No drop this year.
If MS doesn't then they won't.

Or if they don't achieve parity. $449 One versus $399 PS4. But if MS hits $399? Sony loses one part of their edge. Something that they'd be smart not to give up. Because power differentials don't usually mean much to the market.

I think that this year's E3 will be Microsoft's opportunity to start to really turn things around.

Of course, I also think that this year's E3 will be Sony’s opportunity to completely crush any chances Microsoft has of turning things around.

Sony won't lie about their numbers. Investors use this sort of data, and if they find out Sony has been fiddling with numbers, than there will be a lawsuit that can cost Sony millions, if not billions, of dollars.
Not only investors, but also credit rating agencies use this information. If, in hindsight, it turns out that the credit rating was supposed to be lower, Sony can be sued by banks and financial agencies (because: rents would have been higher and some banks then wouldn't even loan money to Sony).

It's ridiculous that you are suggesting that Sony is playing with its sales data and revenue numbers. And it's even more ridiculous if you don't have any evidence to back your claims.

Sony hides it's console numbers in quarterly reports under PlayStation family grouping PS3 and PS4 together, so you wouldn't actually know.

Not that I'm entertaining Sony such bold face lying to our face.

Sony will drop the price. It just depends on how much.

They've got a distinct competitive advantage in being the more powerful cheaper option. Letting it disappear would be folly.

yeah dude, soon enough PS4 will be priced under PS3. Maybe even under Wii if they go for the kill.

In real world, not going to happen.

damn, MS must be in full on panic mode now. no exclusives till the end of the year too. and I still use my 360/PS3 more than my Xbox One because barely any of my friends have an Xbox One, smh

Yeah, a $399 XBO with Kinect vs a $399 PS4 with no PS4 camera in the box starts to lose its value edge. Especially if Titanfall is still in the box.

But that seems like it would be ridiculous losses for MS to go through.

Microsoft deserve every bit of this. The console is doing well if it was in a vacuum but against the PS4, it is falling behind at an alarming rate. As the gap widens, more devs/pubs may choose to create PS4 exclusives just because. What Microsoft needs to do to close the gap:

1. Official price drop to $399 at E3 with two bundles available. Kinect + Sports Rivals + 6 months of Live. and then No Kinect version + Titanfall + Forza + 6 months Live.

2. Launch in China.

3. Partner with Square-Enix to rebrand XB1 in Japan to Squarebox. Generation exclusivity.

4. Launch in Tier 2/3 with similar bundles and lower price than PS4

5. Halo 5, Gears, Rare stuff, etc. all have to look unbelievable at E3

They have no choice but to do some of that stuff, but all that involves taking $$$ hits which they brought upon themselves. There's really not much else they can do. It really looks like the PS4 has this gen locked up and XB1 will be an inevitable distant 2nd.

Please give examples of MS pulling through when their backs are against the wall?

The transition from the Xbox to the Xbox 360? Windows Vista to Windows 7? The latest incarnations of Windows Phone? Zune HD? Hell, you could even make an argument for the Xbox One at its reveal and right now. Windows 8 is looking to be making a similar rebound with the enhancements of Windows 8.1 and the retooling of the Start Menu in a near future update. All of this is pretty damn recent too.

A reaction will not simply be based off the US race for Sony

PS3 design is why the system isn't getting cheaper. Esoteric design that only Sony has produced in any significant numbers. The design was intended to be in everything. PS4 does not have this problem.

And again anything to keep this potentially very lucrative advantage would be the smart play after a huge generation of losses with the PS3.

This post is supposed to come in May :p
although Xbox One sales aren't going to look impressive from here on out

OH lordy, I thought I'd check out TimDog on Twitter . . . ya know . . . just 'cause . . . but he's having this conversation with @clanMOH and he's arguably more ridiculous than TimDog, LOL!!!

If I was a betting man, I would have put money on Xbone winning March.

It just seemed impossible that Xbone wouldn't win. I mean, TF was everywhere.

Not only that, retailers were slashing prices like crazy. $50 off for the tf bundle. Then adding gold.

So I thought for sure it would win. But not only did it not win, but got beaten by 60k. Its not even that close.

I don't know why people think Microsoft are going to resort to bizarre desperate measures.

The system is doing well. It's selling software.

The PS4 is simply performing better.

I would have been glad months ago when they were publicly acting like fools to see this result. Now though? No. This is just sad.

Is there anything they can do to win a month over PS4 in 2014 at this point? The only things I can think of that might do it are either new Halo, or price change, and neither seem as exciting as Titanfall was hyped to be.

MS needs to do something quick when a game that's supposed to be the "killer app" should be increasing console sales.

I think people had unreasonable expectations for how much a multiplayer-only shooter that was simultaneously released on PC could impact hardware sales for a given month. First you've got all the people who choose to buy it on other platforms. Then you've got all the people who already bought their xbox one. You're left with a group of people who bought an xbox one specifically for Titanfall and chose to do it this month.

If it wasn't on PC and 360 I would have given the xbox one pretty good odds for winning March.

Microsoft are shitting themselves since the XBL cash cow is becoming the PS+ cash cow and if they don't reverse that they are fucked.
