We got a fake new Character Select Screen. Beyond that? Probably nothing too exciting

No Palutena or Lucina even in a fake :(

I like how it looks though.

It's nice, but it's too silver-y blue and sleek which doesn't match the warm art style. Also, you'd think Palutena would get unlocked at that point. Not to mention that the select screen would most likely just use "Olimar" and "Rosalina" and not "Pikmin & Olimar/Rosalina & Luma." But 1,000 props for Jigglypuff inclusion and pose.

The design isn't that great either. The selection markers are way too small, and it's annoying how "Ready to fight" cuts off characters.

Really, the best thing about it is how character portraits are displayed, and that's taken from the website. It's not a great design.

You mean just like the other Smash Bros games? That is an absurd criticism.

So...character count predictions?

We have to now count transformations as seperate characters as Sheik and Zero Suit Samus are now revealed to be seperate. I always viewed it as one character per slot, but it's only now fair to count the Shiek, Zero Suit, Ivysaur and Squirtle from the past as they now count as an extra character.

Super Smash Bros: 12 characters
Melee: 26 characters
Brawl: 39 characters

How many characters do you think this game will have? Currently there are 6 newcomers, so if there were no cuts and no more newcomers we will have 45 characters.

However, I think it is safe to say that Ivysaur and Squirtle will get the cut, but I also think we will get at least two more newcomers, which still leaves us at 45 with 8 new characters and no other cuts.

From there it's a case of if we think there will be any more cuts or any more newcomers. Personally I can only see Snake, R.O.B, Wolf, Lucas or Ike being cut. (If Ike is cut then a new fire emblem character will replace him.)

This leaves me with a maximum of five more cuts after Squirtle and Ivysaur, and if there are no more than 8 newcomers then the minimum character count for me is 40.

The maximum I can see happening is 14 total newcomers, and one cut (I think either Snake will go, or there will be some sort of balancing of franchises), giving a total of 52.

So for me it's between 40 and 52. My instinct says 44.

Given the leaks, anything less than 47 is impossible. Leaks aside it's really not probable we get less than 47 anyway.

Brawl had 16 newcomers (18 if you count each pokémon of the trainer), I doubt we're getting less this time.

Also there's literally no place left for the unlockables, unless the character boxes actually shrink.

Interesting. I thought that the competitive community didn't like things like that - stages that could kill you or stages with walls.

You should watch some matches on Pokemon Stadium in competitive Smash Bros. It's hilarious when a match comes to a screetching halt during the Rock Transformation of the stage and both players just awkwardly stand on different sides of the rocks until the transformation is over.

Out of the ones you posted, smash 64 is the only official one that does, and it's transparent.
1. That fake one also is transparent
2. Melee even cuts off two entire rows of characters
3. Fake one only cuts off half of the portrait, just like SSBB

They always represented another character's worth of work from the dev team, which is what matters.

I still don't get the problem. He looks weird but still doesn't change the fact that he can and does get on the ground to attack. Besides that's the usual gimmick people associate with a playable Ridley, awkward on the ground and amazing in the air.

He can, but I don't feel like he ever should in any significant capacity, and more often than not he doesn't. You could maybe cram him into a Jigglypuff-style "has great aerials" mold, but that's just not the same. He was designed around a projectile character while Smash is mostly a melee game, and unless he gets to break some rules, my guess is you'd end up with a Ridley who's about as weird as Falcondorf.

Numbers don't mean anything. You should post what characters you think will get in and that is the number you would think is the number of characters.

I don't like doing that because I really want Snake to stay :( (never used him but it's such a unique franchise to represent)

That may be the case, but not all of us thought of character numbers in such terms before the Direct. I certainly didn't.

This. Although a Sheik is more different to a Zelda than a Dr.Mario is to a Mario and therefore deserves to be counted, the fact that they shared the same character data (as in win/loss records) and slot made me not count it as an extra character. Rather I saw Zelda with "more options". Maybe Sakurai realised a lot of people saw it this way and therefore one of the reasons he made this change of making them completely seperate was so it's worth the effort that does get put into them.

Same. I'd be surprised if we didn't get a Donkey Kong rep though.
I thought this initially. But as time went on, I found it less & less likely that we'd get a new DK character.

If we were gonna get Dixie, she would have been revealed months ago. Likewise, I've pretty much given up hope on the W100/W101.

I'm gonna go with that rumor with 48 characters w/ 4 cuts being legit, & the leaked newcomers remaining being the only ones left....plus the return of Mewtwo.

The DKC franchise is more relevant now than it has been for a very long time. It just makes so much sense.

TW101 never had any chance though.

As far as predicting numbers, I predict a number where the boxes align perfectly + a random box. 49 would allow that, but so would 47 (would like kind of like melees final roster with spaces on the bottom.)

But Dixie pretty much missed the train in February. She just doesn't seem like the kind of character that would be unlockable.

I'm sticking with just DK & Diddy being the DK reps for this game.

Well, not many people separate what they want with what they expect most of the time. Maybe make a list assuming there are no cuts (Squirtle and Ivysaur seem to be on the iffy side) so that won't be an issue lol.

And how did you come to that conclusion?

We don't know much about the newcomer reveal schedule.

Tropical Freeze being released then, a perfect opportunity to reveal Dixie. They revealed Little Mac, instead.

Amazing to think we'll know the full roster by this summer. Probably 3-4 months!
Yea, it feels a bit surreal lol.

Would you say that Greninja should have been revealed earlier? Was Rosalina's reveal in a perfect time as well?

Little Mac was revealed on the anniversary of Punch-Out!

Unless we know the requirements for newcomer reveals, we can't really determine when it would be perfect to reveal newcomers.

For veterans, we have some sort of idea with Sakurai seeming to want to have veterans that are changed like Bowser and Yoshi to be revealed in a way he can explain it clearly (in video form).

Well, some people mentioned that we can earn the points offline so I don't think it would unlocked anyone out.

It's a ranking though, it has to have something to compare against. Being able to earn the points offline doesn't change that it's comparing against an online global list.

I keep seeing people mentioning Shulk. No way he's in. Get real people !
In fact I'm so sure he won't, I'm ready to suck all the dicks available if Shulk ever makes it in Smash.
