Continuing from last topic, because I'm a jerk like that.

Sorry, but that's just kind of the way I am; always analytical and very critical, even of things made just "for fun." I really feel nothing is above or below criticism, and if that makes me kind of a killjoy, oh well, so be it. You'll just have to bear with me, as I will with you. I assure you, I'm not as negative as I seem, I just have a much easier time discussing criticism than anything else really. I love Persona, but love is where the harshest criticism comes from. I wouldn't be here otherwise.

But I fear we are too different in viewpoints on this to come to any middle ground, so I think it's best to just put this behind us. But I do predict us doing this many times in the future. No hard feelings.

Whenever you're ready and same here.

We're like brothers.

Both Dantis and Mamba bring up very good points with regards to the pitfalls of arena. If I didn't enjoy it so immensely as a well built game, I don't think I could overlook its glaring blemishes. To each his own man, they're not killjoys because they don't like what everyone else does :/

I'm officially banishing Yosuke to the "never raising your S. Link ever again" dimension along with Chie and Teddie. I wish Naoto would show up earlier so I could remove him from my party too.

^What he do this time?

I don't actually mean it tho....or DO I?

Whoa I missed out on some heavy Persona news today! Super stoked to see Rise in action! Gonna have to create a new personal rotation of players with Yukari and Rise in addition to Naoto (I'll probably drop Yukiko and Narukami). Aww yiss, more waifu warz.

Oh and OT5 woo! Still has that new thread smell.

I was too late to suggest my title of |OT5| The Grimdark Knight Rise tho :(

I need a game consisting of Teddie dressed in all of his costumes, with each one representing a social link. Also Kanji is there as the villain out for his fuzzy twink fur.

Make it happen ATLUS. It's practically begging to sell millions.

Congrats on another OT, PersonaGAF! :) Had so many good laughs (and great times) in OT4 that I hope to participate a little more this time around. Great work as always, guys!

Are you talking about this?

To me it sounds like one of two things: either Nick thinks he just did a good job and is rightfully happy about it, or he just edited a line where something good happens in a game.

My guess would be a little of both. If it's editing, then whatever the line is for is likely still at the point where it's being edited in an Excel spreadsheet, outside the context of the actual game. In that case, it's likely more to do with the writing, since that's all you could see. My guess, if it's Persona-related, would be that it was a really clever way to convert a line deeply rooted in the Japanese language. And if it is Persona-related, then there's no way it would be for Q or Ultimax, considering that they're launching this year.

Well, we're mostly kidding. But the thing is: You do enjoy it and that was their intent (to make a fun well-built game).

I think if they wanted to seriously do Persona 4-2, the story would be nothing like Arena, but that too is another pointless hypothetical. Shouldn't waste time on that.

P4A

Finished Yukiko mode and reached Mitsuru and Akihiko's cliffhangers.

If that's not a blatant sequel hook I don't know what is.

Remember at the time some were worried that the hook would be for a Persona 5? :p

I think most expected arena 2, but not for it to take place like days after the story of Arena.

I think I'll jump right back in it with you, because I hate myself;

As a crossover fighting game, I would argue part of the appeal of Arena comes from seeing and playing as your favorite characters, and I don't think it's unreasonable at all to feel that this appeal is hampered by the characters' representations. I mean, Super Smash Bros. is a fun as heck game, but I don't think anyone would fault someone taking issue with Ganondorf playing like Captain Falcon.

I mean, if someone doesn't enjoy how a character is portrayed then doesn't that mean that they at least partially failed on their attempt at making a fun crossover fighter from whoever feels that way's perspective?

EDIT: Stumbled into the other OT for a second and was very confused.

You can't please everyone, though. Excluding Yu, who could never hope to fit everyone's image of the P4 protagonist, I only feel like Kanji is really out of character in P4A.

But do you think the game itself isn't portraying the characters correctly, from a fighting standpoint?

I mean, reading the Arena artbook, they knew enough for Chie's stances coming into and out of moves to make some of them awkward, even if she's successful, because she's self-trained. Of course, the sad thing is that in itself is researched enough, and yet the characters are somewhat caricatures of themselves in the story mode, but I blame the mode itself more for that than anything else. Labrys, the original character for the game, was handled very well from a story standpoint, and I think that tells me that the story structure itself is the real culprit.

Of course, then they turn around and are seemingly using the same damn format again for Ultimax, so what do I know? :p

I find it really funny that one of Akihiko's lines in P4A is "A true man is only allowed to cry when he loses his wallet!"

Self-depreciation much, buddy?

I actually have little problem with how the P4 characters are portrayed outside of story mode mode save the protagonist; I mostly don't care for the P3 characters and their new designs, which are kind of unavoidable in regular gameplay.

It is of course impossible to please everyone, but I don't think that necessarily negates anyone's issues they might have. That's just the nature of the beast; everyone has their own perspective, it's up to us to sort them out.

MY LONG LOST TWIN

Joking aside, welcome to PersonaGAF!

Ha!! Thanks, arue! ^_^ I've actually been around and posted a bit in the last OT; just would like to be a little more involved -- wouldn't want to miss out on all of the fun, you know? ;-) Definitely appreciate the welcome!

Again, I think the characters being caricatures is a joke they make intentionally (a lot of the humor in P4A is very self-aware, as we often point out) and they've earned the right to do that. If you don't like that, fair enough, but I do think it's your loss as opposed to theirs.

Some of the parody didn't feel that bad, though. Like Akihiko demanding a protein shake and calling it "the good stuff" was hilarious. Distorted Chie trying to eat Yosuke was funny, too.

Its more when the joke kinda falls apart that I'm left shrugging. Specifically when Kanji's "yeah what a cool dream this is!" is taken too far because it leaves an enormous gaping hole in the entire story.
