GRID: Autosport - Announcement trailer and info

Good read! Is there anymore to elaborate on the "Authentic Racing" direction being taken? It sounds like it's being taken into account for Codies games in the future also? Rally Stages with damage being carried over in stages in Dirt4 maybe? :p

I'd like to think we make authentic racing games, at least for the foreseeable future, on tarmac or gravel and mud.

Granted, the handling would be different, but if I were feeling crazy enough one day, could I still do this without wrecking my car?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psjtY82jreg

Depends on how fast you were going, the force at impact etc. Best case scenario is that you'd severely damage your wheels on that side, either breaking them so you suffer reduced turning capabilities or you'd damage suspension etc.

You can always turn mechanical damage off though and have it visual only, if that makes you happy then go for it.

That's certainly true with F1. I've found more recently that the authenticity resides with the cars and how they drive and not much further than that. I'm talking more about the experience around it. Competing in the WRC in the old Colin Mcrea games for example, you could mess up a corner and wreck halfway through your second stage and it would be really hard to try to make up the time for the rest of the rally afterwards. To me at least some of the authenticity of racing is the experience of racing in a league where qualifying badly can make racing to the top of the pack an effort. Or limping a car through the time gate into the service stage is an achievement.

That's not a dig at all by the way. By and large Codemasters games still really impress me. The EGO engine gives Codies games a distinct aesthetic that stands out from other titles.

Some of my favourite races in Autosport so far are the ones where I've come 4th, 8th and even 12th. As you said, It's that racing experience that makes it that way, winning is great but but a 'win' could be interpreted in many ways.

I actually like the handeling in grid 2 a lot (i'm an arcade racing fan, PGR4 is my favourite racing game) will i have a hard time in autosport being more sim like. (i dislike sim racing games a lot)

Last gen only? Sorry no buy.

Sad to say that when they are apparently making an effort to make it more of a sim again.

We've got a great selection of assists to help you ease into the handling and we obviously do things where at the start of the career you're in the 'easier' cars to drive etc.

May take 2-3 races but you shouldn't find yourself a fish completely out of the water.

Wow, wasn't expecting this one so soon. GRID was my favourite racer from last gen, couldn't get into GRID 2.

This looks good, real good. For me I hope it's a return to form.

PS4 version please!

Looks a lot like GRID2 + BayetasMod...

...which is a good thing, specially with all the new tracks and options.

Will there be improved modding support over GRID2 too?

The lack of a next gen version (even if an up-ressed port) is interesting to say the least...

I'm very interested in the game...but would have been even more excited for even just straight port at a higher resolution/frame rate...

So, we can practically alter the complete execution of the career races to personal standard:

- length of races (those approx. 20 laps per race if we wish)
- level of assists
- tire wear will come as consequence of aforementioned longer races or only in "endurance" races?
- also, Eurogamer interview said how endurances will be driven by night only, did I caught that right?
- there was glympse of working wipers in one video, is it for the rain or for the windshiled dirt? :)

Also, do you care to contextualize the ownership/mantainance aspect if possible?

Is damage transferring onto vehicles post-race? Does vehicle gets more "worn" with usage (damaging, mileage, etc)? If yes, does vehicle needs a repair, or we are buying a new one?

BTW I personally can live with low-poly and blurres cockpits as they are, it is better to have them like this then not to have them.

Ugh! Will I ever be able to play a racing game on my PlayStation 4?

I know NFS is out, but I want something more substantial and sim/simcade-like.

Geez, I mean, the infinite delay of DriveClub, no word on Gran Turismo PS4, and Project Cars isn't due until November. Finally hear about a racing series that I like coming to PlayStation in June and of course it's the PS3!

Looks pretty good, CM!

Will there be a demo? And thanks for the response btw it eased my mind

Length of races: 20 laps / 40 minutes for Endurance
Assists: more info on Thursday, all the usual suspects are there though, can you hold off until then?
Tyre wear: Only in Endurance, will scale depending on length of race
Endurance: Always at night, different tracks are lit differently which gives a nice variety
Wipers: No rain, possibly dirt but will have to check!

Vehicles get worn via use, gain mileage etc You will have to repair them but there will be a point where repairs only do so much and you may find yourself having to sell / buy a new car. I think we're scheduled to talk about this mid May as a heads up :)

None currently planned, all resource is being piled directly into the game itself.

How is this mod? Have you tried it? I hate the handling of GRID 2 but if this really fixes it i'd give it another go.

@CodiesLoore - can we expect to see any previews from the independent racing specific websites such as Team VVV and Inside Sim Racing anytime soon?

I'd sure like to read/hear the thoughts of a racing enthusiast rather than the mainsteam press who usually have NFI about motorsports (Martin Robinson of Eurogamer excluded).

Thank you for the details Loore, much appreciated.

No probs for assists, I do not use them, but it is nice for casual players to have their own way. Looking forward to career structure details and ways that XP (I presums it is XP/Cr combo involved in rewarding structure) is influenced by different modifiers.

However, amazing details about ownership consequences, I am most excited to see will the public/media recognize the importance of that approach and award it accordingly. I am really eager to see the way it is implemented because it is almost unbelivable to hsve it finally included in driving/racing game other than GT. Such great feature that really needs to become a genre-standard. Which leads me to another question, I know it is late in the UK and this was a long day, but I have to ask:

Will the ownership consequences be implemented in online multiplayer? It is by far the ultimate factor that can positively change the way online racing etiquette is executed and can change the online racing forever. Thank you in advance.

I hope so! We certainly want the more racing specfic guys to play it :)

I think it is great, but I am the main developer so my opinion is very biased. :)

You have an independant review from SimulatedHeaven here http://youtu.be/reun5CywimA

It is a pity that cars interiors are not very HQ and cannot be modified, but during the race itself you really don't focus that much on the cockpit. I don't think CM will allow custom car development for their games any time soon, but it will be a great addition to GRID Autosport if they changed the policy on excessive cars DLC.

Version 0.7b of the mod has been just released at www.bayetasmod.net with almost all cars completed.

A lot of work gone into our PC version, a port it most definitely isn't.

4K Textures are a PC only feature btw.

Sounds good but can you give us some non compressed (PNG) 1440p screenshots of cars and track shots?

The last-gen~ness is showing but truth be told, I'm already in the alpha for project cars and assetto corsa so my next gen photorealistic sim racing needs are met.

What isn't met is a game that isn't as hard core as those 2 games. Something that I can just kick back and not have to sweat every single movement on the track as well as something that friends and family can play on my fanatec setup without always crashing or spinning off the track (it's funny for a bit but gets old really fast) so a really good looking racer that isn't too arcadey is just what I need right now but I do want it to be enough of a sim that I feel legitimately rewarded for using an expensive wheel/pedal setup with good force feedback and a game that rewards good clean driving skills but doesn't brutally punish you for the slightest mistakes.

Couple of questions though...

- Nurburgring? (pls)

- Microtransactions? In game credits vs tokens that can be purchased with real money?

- Can we get a list of the pc graphics options?

- Track IR/Occulus support?

- 5.1 surround sound?

- Can we manually set time of day for the race or practice?

- Is there a free race mode where we can pick any or almost any car in it's stock form to race?

@CodiesLoore - Yesterday's annoncement and news of Autosport definitely made my day. I'm happy to be once again looking forward to a game from you guys, as well hearing that you really did take notes of the criticism and acknowledging the fact that you left the fanbase out in the cold with the casual crap that was GRID2.

Anyway...

Edit : Just a quick question; will you be bale to share custom liveries, in multi- as well singleplayer?

Screenshots - will see what I can do

No specific track info just yet (other than those in yesterday's announcement), sorry!

Microtransactions - nope!

Track IR / Oculus support - not currently

5.1 - yes

Time of day - yes, in custom cup you'll the option to set the race up as you want, day / night is part of those options

free race mode - yes, we call it custom cups

@Methamatics101

Afraid not, but it is something we're looking at supporting if possible

Oh wow now I'm legitimately excited.

Loore, does this mean that if you're the person engaging in demolition derby and other more destructive behaviours online, you're going to effectively be losing money overall?

Because that would be great.
I have always thought it was weird that there aren't lasting effects between multiplayer races in racing games. With how the guy that caused the turn 1 pileup by not braking gets a get out of jail free card for the next race.

Two questions:

1. Will this be like GRID 1 where we can shop around for a cheaper but potentially unreliable car instead of just winning them?

2. Weather, yes/no/maybe so?

Regarding online, my small community is interested in the following details, if answers are possible this early:

- Will there be Official Matchmaking, like open public lobbies for the quick races (pick-up-and-race), but with officially predetermined pre-requisites (by admins) - like one of the track, with selected cars, no assists, etc - let the best man win?

- Will there be Special Online Events (as in your F1 games for instance, or Forza Rivals, or GT's Seasonals)?

- Will there be options to set Public Lobbies with individual settings for anyone interested on server to jump in the lobby he finds interesting?

- If yes, can the tuning/parts-adding be prohibited through filtering (forcing stock cars, no assists or cockpit view for instance)?

- Are there penalty options (for ramming, off-track driving, etc.) implemented in online?

- Based on the legacy of the original TOCA games, can player be automatically disqualified from the race for the multi-penalties in one race? Are flags represented?

- Based on the announced Career mode and announcement of Clubs, will the online support Team Racing (to have the field filled with teams of 2 drivers driving for the same "team" and corresponding points-awarding)?

- We saw 16 players in the Eurogamer preview, will there be 16 players in the online racing?

- Will there be Multi-Class racing (as in the TOCA Race Driver 2 and 3)?

- It is announced how game will have Global Leaderboards, will there be fitering options based on usage of assists or input device (steering wheels, etc)?

Thank you in advance ;)

Codies being bombarded left, right and centre lol..

Some specific sound questions if possible:

-Will we hear the blow off valves and turbo spools from turbocharged cars?
The BOV's from DiRT 3 were excellent.

- Will there be any transmission, supercharger and brake whine?

-Are you guys modeling driveline flex?
(where gearbox 'wobbles', oscillates and reacts to gear changes and track surfaces)

Will this be like GRID 1 where we can shop around for a cheaper but potentially unreliable car instead of just winning them?

You can buy second hand cars, more info on that soon

Weather, yes/no/maybe so?

No

- Will there be Official Matchmaking, like open public lobbies for the quick races (pick-up-and-race), but with officially predetermined pre-requisites (by admins) - like one of the track, with selected cars, no assists, etc - let the best man win?

We're still locking down what playlists we'll have, should be a good selection on offer though.

- Will there be Special Online Events (as in your F1 games for instance, or Forza Rivals, or GT's Seasonals)?

Yes, there will be. Think Global challenge from GRID 2 but upgraded.

Yes

No

You can race as a team online using your Club, we'll be talking more about this in the coming weeks.

- We saw 16 players in the Eurogamer preview, will there be 16 players in the online racing?

Online is 12 players only

- Will there be Multi-Class racing (as in the TOCA Race Driver 2 and 3)?

Not currently

- It is announced how game will have Global Leaderboards, will there be fitering options based on usage of assists or input device (steering wheels, etc)?

That's currently planned, yes.

-Will we hear the blow off valves and turbo spools from turbocharged cars?

I can hear it right now :D

- Will there be any transmission, supercharger and brake whine?

I'll check with our audio guys, I know we've been doing a lot of stuff with breaks and tyres at the moment in terms of feedback to the player

-Are you guys modeling driveline flex?

Pass, will find out from one of our handling designers

Thanks for all the answers too CodiesLoore. Much better for devs to just spill the beans and not raise expectations to insane levels with an information drought.

Great answers Loore, everything is shaping absolutely beyond expectations.

Thank you for your effort!

Edit: Uh, sorry, one more thing :) Is the renderer separated from the physics engine AKA is the graphics refresh indepentent from the physics (stealth question about stability of possibly locked 30fps on consoles, I know it is not most popular question, but since Ferrari Race Legends I can absolutely live with 30fps on pastgen consoles if aformentioned separation is implemented)?
