Give it time and they'll produce some great games. Western devs have managed, Japanese devs will follow. Mobile gaming ain't the devil, it's just a little different from what we're used to.

They already have with PDZ and Brave Frontier. I mean on the top grossing chart, theirs is better than the west with Candy Crush Saga.

Eh, I have yet to see great games on mobile :(
Then you're not looking hard enough, seriously. Maybe check out the iOS thread from time to time?

Coincidentally, I have Ghost Trick installed on my phone. I know, I know, there's the whole 'port vs. original content' thing. I'm not providing GT as an example, just saying it's a funny coincidence.

Absolutely, fair point. I think they can do better by way of 'larger' games though. Stuff you play for hours, not minutes. I have faith that once Japanese devs really get a grip on what works for mobile gaming, they'll produce some great stuff.

I did. Only small chunk games. The problem with ports is a double edged sword. Ports are fast cash-in, but I highly doubt a game such as Ghost Trick could exist as an iOS exclusive.

Damn, lousy all around. I expected PS4 to drop slightly more; perhaps FFXIV sold a handful of consoles.

Youkai Watch beast mode continues. Figured it would get back to #1 at some point during a slow week, and it has now happened.

Wii U am cry. MK8 can't come soon enough.

are from f2p mechanics. I'm sure the revenue stream will decline to more normal levels as the industry burns through the whales, just as facebook/zynga did.
I feel this is a misconception in that many of the top hits on mobile in the US are actually directly derived from Facebook games.

Facebook didn't burn through their whales, they just moved to phones where reaching the same games were much more convenient.

Companies who failed to make the switch quickly (*cough* Zynga *cough*) got burnt hard while companies that did (Kabam) made a shitload.

Surely he meant games for enthusiasts? There are plenty of tjhose in US App Market. Despite knowing this, I'm still sceptical on mobile market creating an actually good games that have smashing succes on the public. The last time I consider such is Angry Birds, It was good, but now looks where we head to with the mainstream mobile games. I hope at least in the US make some regulation to weed out those scamware (as Europe already did) and clonewares .

Don't know about Japan though, is there any great games beside the biggies? Surely the market isn't just filled card games clones or PDZ clones.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
3DS higher than last week for Famitsu, lower for MC. What's up with such discrepancies? :lol

Btw, remember this was the week before the XL model starts being sold with the free voicher (which, technically, accounts for a 4,000-5,000 Yen price cut for the XL itsel, if you think about it). For those in Japan: is Nintendo advertising the new offer? In a good way? They need to male people aware of the offering.

Absolutely. Casuals aren't disappearing, they're just shifting around the way hardcore gamers did in the early days. Rapid shifts (and subsequent collapses) of Collecovision, Atari, Sears (yes, they produced a console), Intellivision, and so forth.

Young markets tend to see this sort of rapid churn. It isn't a sign the market is dying; it's a sign the market is highly competitive and growing.

We already discussed that some weeks ago right? It's surprising that this numbers disparencies keep happening. It's look like they can't come into term for the handhled numbers lol

Offer starts on April 26 (this Saturday), so we'll see next week if there's any impact at all on sales.

IIRC, the game/update had content that was only in the Western release to begin with, and a few extras, so maybe there'll be a patch at some point?

EU and NA happened within the 2 months following the JP release, I doubt they had time to add anything.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say you would like this one. :p

As I said, my problem with ports is that I doubt the original game would exist if only on mobile. When you have nothing left to port, you have to make brand new games and that's the complicated part. Sure, there are a lot of funny games on phones (I'm actually having a lot of fun with Smash Hit or 2048) but those are 5 minutes games I check sometimes. But for great games ? I have yet to see one.

As a whole I'm not going to disagree with your core point in that Japanese handheld development is significantly stronger for traditional audiences than Japanese mobile development.

At this point Japanese handhelds largely receive the type of local market support that consoles do in the West, so you have a good share of the best teams working on them, whereas mobile tends toward newer staff working to appeal to people who want to play for 5-10 minutes as a time and view gaming as a fun activity in the margins of life rather than something you sit down with for an 1-3+ hours.

That said, as things continue to wear down, I suspect we will see some more movement in mobile toward things that resemble traditional games. I feel we're seeing heavier attempts out of companies like Square Enix and Level 5 lately even if they're obviously still not comparable to their handheld output.

Yes, you've got a point here ! But my main concern is that when best teams will move toward mobile... will they adapt to the mobile market, or release their usual stuff on mobile ?

If you can prove there's a market for these kinds of games in the mobile arena, port or no, eventually the original games will come. So while I think you're right, I don't think it's inevitable that when we run out of things to port, the market for meaty, single-purchase games will disappear. Either that market will dissipate long before we run out of ports or someone will target that niche specifically with new material. There are too many small developers (which mobile is suited to) who don't want to make Skinner boxes.

As someone who rarely plays mobile games, Apple allowing any Bluetooth controller to be used instead of their insistence on their proprietary BS would go a long way. They're essentially in control of the mobile games market and they largely don't give a shit. I don't trust them to push things forward although I acknowledge mobile devices are the future with the way their market is growing.
