PS Vita PCH-2000 | Light and Slim. 6 Colors. No More OLED, Instead Cute Penguins

1. I've never had any problems with scratching on either model. Just use a foam sleeve when not in use, and you should be fine.
2. Better than the original due to the larger finger rests on the back, but still far from optimal. You'll need to use headphones as your hands will be directly over the speakers most of the time (fucking horrible placement). Still worlds more comfortable than a 3DS. I can actually do just as well at Spelunky on a Vita as I can on a PC with a wired 360 controller.
3. Less substantial but not cheaper. Still looks well put together. The new charging port is awesome; I never have to worry about bringing a charger.
4. The difference is pretty large (on the level of plasma vs. LCD), and I find myself missing the inky blacks and saturated colors. I don't have to worry about image retention, though, and I can comfortably play on 25% brightness and get a lot of extra battery life.

I would keep your original if you are a stay at home mobile gamer and battery life is not a big issue to you.

Answer a number 5? How are the slim's trigger/shoulder buttons compared to the 1000s? My 1000 model the triggers are so loose it is aggravating and really making me contemplate wasting 200 plus shipping for a Japan slim. Khaki or lime green.

The new shoulder triggers are nice and tight. They don't have that soft/sponging feel that plagues the 1000 series.

I'm loving the slim 2000. Now they put away my 1000 model , I don't miss the OLED at all. The 2000 still feels sturdy with the thinner design.

And the all white 2000 blows the all white 1000 out of the water in the aesthetics department. It just looks so clean.

I am using the hori screen protector on the 2000. Easy installation. Much easier than the 1000 hori screen protector.

What screen protector are people using for the psv-2000?

Man, I love when threads ask and answer the exact question I was just about to ask.

Thanks!

I'm using the Hori screen protector too and was able install it flawlessly. Definitely much easier than using the 1000 model screen protectors.

Hori PS Vita PCH-2000 model screen protector.

I just bought from Amazon last week. Hopefully they'll restock soon.

I know mine is the OLED Model but the glass SP is just awesome
the clarity and touch it offers cannot be matched by the conventional SP

(btw, anyone apply anything to the backpad?)

All those positive comments on PSV-2000 really makes me buy it day 1 but I need to wait patiently for a sale since I need to buy 64GB too

OMG!

This thing is perfect!

First thing first, I must say the lime color and overall fit/finish is first rate.

The back panel being reduced in size is a blessing. The grip areas being increased really do add a substantial bit of comfort.

I fully expected a light and seemingly cheaply built system (Neogaf reduced cost bitching/hyperbole and all, even if they've never held this thing); that's not what the 2000 is. It's actually an improvement. I haven't used it extensively or really done more than hold it and power it on - but the weight balance is PERFECT. It's not creaky (3DS XL), nor is it flimsy. If one held the 1000 Vita and found it substantial and premium in feel, this will satisfy. This feels as premium as the 1000 - but refined, evolved.

The buttons are fantastic. No more rattle to the face buttons and the trigger/shoulder buttons are finally tight. They aren't as malleable in user force, nor do the prattle and feel loose. I feel games reliant on these shoulder buttons will be more than a margin improved, in playability. A god send, truly.

I'm excited to finally use the system and retire the OLED. I'll see how it holds up over time, but thank goodness I used Amazon and paid a a bit more for a unique color+ no import shipping/waiting +no tax lol....

My wrists will finally be fine playing this thing ^_^

Is that more yellow, or green? From the announcement of the 2000, I thought that it was yellow, but I like green so much more.

it doesn't but I assure you it's not a problem. especially for Vita 2K
the surface of a tempered glass screen protector is simply <3

I got it at a local store. hmm you can try Amazon.com :D

no one protects the rear touchpad?

woah, was thinking about getting a tempered glass protector after getting one for my iphone.

How does the HTC one's fit? Isn't that screen smaller?

I was originally planning to pick up an OLED, but damn that white/lime is pretty sexy. As a VitaGAF newcomer, would I really be missing out on much with the OLED? Is the 2000 an overall better model?

Ive read about people purchasing from SuperUFO.com. I'm not familiar with them, is that the best place to grab one of the colored Japan versions? Is there anything noticeably different about this version that I should be aware of?

For me the screen type heavily outweighs any ergonomic improvements made. Honestly I don't think you could go wrong with either but weigh your options. I think the 1000 is still perfectly fine. A friend of mine picked up an OLED one because he didn't want the LCD version.

Also try waiting for store demo kiosks if you can hold out.

Now that I've fully charged and am using my 2000 - keeping my OLED because, why not - I prefer the 2000 screen.

It doesn't look washed out and actually everything looks natural, hard to explain. Sure blacks (but now not blotchy) aren't as deep, but they're deep enough (better than other LCD screens, I've seen (including our retina iPad mini in that regard, blacks).

The louder speakers and improved brightness for daylight gaming, are big improvements and no longer do I worry about image burn in :)

I had trepidations - trust me, I did - bit the improvements of the 2000 are not modest and it's definitely not a downgrade in build and quality.

- edit: the screen does not have a weird warm/green tint like I feared from pics :)

It's weird how the 2000 screen looks significantly worse in pictures than it does in real life (and all the pics that put it next to an OLED don't help :p). I was expecting a screen quite a bit worse than what I actually got. I think it's still a fantastic screen, even if the colors don't pop as much.

If we had decent colors coming like this coming to US, I would've gladly waited and picked a 2000 up instead of an OLED but nope I gotta import to get the good stuff. SCEA why hate variety of colors?!

The 2000's LCD screen is better than the OLED screen.

Not really. After using it, the LCD is alright but definitely not better than the OLED unless you hate mura effect/ high contast

Depends on where you order. Last I checked you can get it imported with FedEx shipping for ~$215 at SuperUFO.com, and there are cheaper but slower shipping options available as well

That's not bad at all. But they haven't announced the US price right? I'm figuring $200 which is about the same price after tax. Of course you lose the value of the BL2 bundle.

I gladly paid $249 on Amazon (I'm in NA), the order was fulfilled by Amazon (trustworthy incase of issues) and the new (lime white) Vita was already on US soil, so no waiting other than a couple days for delivery.

I didn't want an all black system (smudge magnet).

That's actually what I'm thinking of doing. Mostly for the good exchange/return policy in case there's any issues with the unit.

Do it.

Even though I'm keeping my white OLED, I'll probably never use it again - unless the 2000 breaks.

I can't go back.

The improvements (sticks, speakers, buttons and dare I say...the screen), are too great.

Like Drago, I expected a warm, shitty, green tinted washed out 2008 LCD panel.

What I got looks as good as the OLED - but not tint saturated. It is not a downgrade, like I'd been led to believe. I am very happy and relieved. I was fully prepared to hate it, to just 'make do' and just deal with it....

.....I'm as surprised as I've ever been, with regard to hardware. What I got, regarding the 2000, the system is as impressive as the moment I first held a Vita in Feb 2012. It's as premium - but restyled.

Best analogy:

Iphone 4 to the iphone 5.

The weight has reduced but the fit and finish is as premium and the build quality just as sharp.

Regarding screen protectors:

Hori's are always good. I've had success with their protectors on my Nintendo portables.

For my Vita 2000, I went with Illumishield. They give you three in a pack, and they're cut to match the 2000's screen cover. They use Japanese PET film and it seems to be pretty high quality. I've had no problems with air bubbles, specs trapped under the protector, touch screen sensitivity, peeling, etc.

They're also cheap. $3.95 + shipping for a pack.

bought these on Amazon and can vouch for their quality as someone who's been using Hori for years. I prefer these quite honestly, especially due to you getting "3 tries" per pack ;)

That and supposedly they're made in good ol' 'murica

thanks for this.

Hopefully these should be good.

DAT OLED finally getting swept under the rug.

Hail to the king, baby. Slim Vita is superior.

I've been saying this all along. I have the Black/Khaki slim and I decided to buy it over "DAT OLED" model. I made the right choice. The rest of you who do the same will be making the right choice.

How does the HTC one's fit? Isn't that screen smaller?

The HTC One M8 (latest model) has a 5inch screen.. but if you factor in the HTC branding, it'll be too wide for the OLED Vita (it touches the edge if the analog sticks)
The HTC One M7 (previous model) which is the one I am using fits the Vita OLED nicely

not sure which will fit the Vita 2K though - I think the M8 may work

I have a screen protector on the back touchpad of my vita lol

hmm I'm thinking of doing that. I had Skinomi on the back of my OLED White Vita.. but decided to go bare/naked for the OLED Black Vita - kinda regret it though... may end up applying something... (not sure why Sony did not choose something Matt like the DS4 touchpad for the rear touchpad)

Beautiful. Really hope this thing helps Vita sales.
Still think my white Vita is the best model.

I love the Black/Khaki, don't get me wrong. The minute I saw the color offerings here in Asia, it was automatic "I'm getting Black/Khaki" and there was no question of it.

In hindsight, though, I sort of wish I got the White/Ice Blue (is that what they're calling it?). Only reason being, SMUDGES!!!

I'll get Black/Black :X haha if I ever get a Vita 2K
hmm I can't remember but what's the rear touchpad surface like on the Vita 2K rubbery or the same plastic gloss finish on OLED?

Couple of questions:

  • Does the slim have 3G? Or did they drop that altogether? How about video out?
  • Any word on VitaTV leaving Japan?
Oh, and how is vita homebrew at this stage?

Thanks.

Really like this colour but I can't justify paying $250+ to get it instead of $200 to get a black one with Borderlands 2 bundled in with it. Hmmm....

I feel bad for people who would have to pay import costs to get one.

They're like, just under $200 here (when New Taiwan dollars are converted to USD).

No word
Vita homebrew technically sucks at this stage

Anyone know?

I didn't get a chance to test the 1k's wifi/remote play functionality.

Remote play on my Slim Vita is good-to-decent. Like, for 30-45 minutes straight I'll get no dips in stability, and then I'll start getting some latency and that ! icon that hits about 3 times before tapering off for a while again.

This might be common with a lot of people, but I do happen to know that my internet isn't the best it could be. The agent who helped us get our apartment here in Taipei set us up with a shitty broadband/cable TV provider that came as a combo. I've also got their company router, which is absolute shit.

Before the summer is out I plan to change providers (my friend is with the best company for internet service) and get a dual band router.

I do, however, notice that the wifi icon on my Vita rarely stays at a full four bars of signal strength. So take that for what it is.

I'd be willing to give up dat oled for improved shoulder buttons, but I'd have to trade my old vita in for the cash, I have to wonder if I'll be able to find a vita 2000 in Moose Jaw or Regina anytime soon at a EB where I could actually trade my old system in.

I suspect I'll be waiting for some time

XBOX - RECORD ME LOVING DOWN MY WOMAN GOOD
G'ah, I keep going back and forth. As a non-vita owner, was going to buy an OLED model today because every video and picture makes the LCD look inferior by a large margin. But everything else about the Slim is what I would prefer. Screen takes priority for me. I hope kiosks pop up soon so I can try the slim out myself as my biggest worry is I will open up my new expensive handheld and realize the oled/LCD differences have been downplayed here and I will regret my decision.

Has anyone seen a Slim kiosk display in US stores yet?
