Sony Registers “Dark Chronicle” Trademark After Over a Decade of Limbo

Dark Cloud was the first PS2 game I ever played, never did get to play the sequel. Currently replaying it, I still like it but it might just be nostalgia talking.

Dark Cloud 2 is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. Criminally overlooked.

Even Ken Levine gave it a shout out and used it as an example in one of his GDC talks this year.

I'd love to see this on Vita or on PSN.

Unless it's on Vita or something, I doubt it'll be a collection release. The first game is on PSN in Japan, so it doesn't make a lot of sense to do that on console.

The first two games sold well right? I don't understand why they didn't make a third game yet, especially when Level 5 expressed interest years ago. Meh.

Sony was probably scared by the decline on PS2 in its prime:

Yes yes YES

I'm anticipating an E3 reveal (lol)

but, seeing as it skipped a generation, I can only imagine how the series will look on the PS4. My god. Will this be the generation of the RPG?

A Dark Cloud 3 would actually probably be a good candidate for a F2P game with its randomized dungeons and town building. I could see them selling stuff like structures/buildings to put in your town and items to help you in dungeons. Plus if it's F2P it would probably be multiplayer so they can let you explore dungeons with a friend like Diablo and invite friends to your town.

It might work as F2P game, but that's a very difficult avenue to go down with the gamers that Sony would be targeting. F2P in general have a very negative reputation among "core gamers". Just look at the skepticism that has surrounded deep down since it was announced a F2P. Much of Capcom's marketing will be built around making players feel comfortable with it. And it'd be worse with Dark Cloud 3 because there are people that really love that series and they won't want to see it be F2P.

Makes sense. Level 5 is always making PlayStation exclusives, no reason to believe they wouldn't want to go back to one of their older franchises.

F2P would possibly hurt it. Hopefully, if its implemented, none of the dropping chances are messed with and they just use a real money store front that allows a person to pay for raw material packs. Also rare things like high level gems.

The last Level-5 PlayStation exclusive (LBX W) shipped in 2012, and that ended up getting ported to 3DS. They haven't announced anything for PlayStation (outside of Wonderflick, which is on everything) since then.

Are you referring to Ni No kuni? I thought that was a 3ds. Game adapted to the ps3.

Well, with the exception of Ni no Kuni, most of the PS-exclusives from L5 happened because Sony forked the cash...

Will Sony do so again this gen?

You're right, but two years isn't really that long, and they've definitely got a history of PlayStation exclusives.

we there was talk of Wild Arms when did this happen?

Recently. A producer at SCEI said that he'd like to bring WA to the PS4 and Vita. Sony has also recently started bringing back WA for co-marketing material. They recently announced a Wild Arms X Soul Sacrifice accessory crossover and for Toro's 15th anniversary they released some new art of WA characters with Toro.

I was twelve when I went to buy it at my local supermarket. In the end my brother convinced me to buy DmC.

I won't make the same mistake again Sony please.

As much as I want to see a PS4 release the grindy, pickup, putdown nature of the game would be so good on the Vita.

Sure, but it seems that Level-5 right now is keen on focusing on kids, and smartphones. Neither of which really overlap with PlayStation. Sony certainly could pay them to make a DC3, though. They could also get someone else to make it if WKC: Origins is anything to go by.

Ni no Kuni PS3 launched in 2011 in Japan. Level-5's long localization made it a 2013 release in the west, but like usual they added some new stuff. They ended up doing a budget re-release of the western version in Japan. The first Ni no Kuni was a DS game. They're related, and have some similar sequences, but IIRC they're not the same game.

The game I was referring to is Little Battlers eXperience/Danball Senki W. That was one of their kids properties that started on PSP.

Oh, very interesting. Well, I hope this E3 everyone gets a surprise.

L5 have stated that they'd love to do a DC3 some day, but have too many other projects going on. (this was something like 4 years ago, btw)

it doesn't matter if they get UN-BUSY though, because Sony owns Dark Cloud and they'd have to collaborate with L5 again.

personally, i'd rather Sony contact L5 and moneyhat them to make a DC3. i'd prefer Sony Japan Studio not try to make it on their own, or worse, get a different third party developer to help out with it. there's just something about L5's way of creating incredibly charming worlds and characters... just look at Ni No Kuni: if they ported that engine over to PS4 and made DC3 i'd absolutely lose it. i'd die happy.

Oh man... if they really revived Dark Cloud 3... or even a remastered PS4 edition.... This might be the first game i pre-order in a long long time.

I don't like randomised dungeons but it'd be interesting to see what L5 can do on PS4 after Ni no Kuni.

Ugh, I just noticed that the trademark was filed in Japan. It's going to be a PS2 Archive release on PS3 and nothing more.
