Play Nintendo - Announcing Nintendo @ E3 2014

I am perfectly fine with nintend know having a press conference. Just as long as the stream is good. Last year the jaggy nature of the direct made Mario kart and 3d world look ugly and I wrote the games off instantly. It is IMPORTANT the stream is stable so people experience the games in hd first....

... Well, it also didn't help that the 3d world reveal trailer was a boring trailer...

They have Youtube and Twitch channels now for livestreaming, so quality shouldn't be an issue this time around.

No press conference, then.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. No one will pay any attention. Again.

"Hey, remember how last year the hardcore gamers hated our stuttering live stream, and we didn't get any mass media coverage for our event? Let's do that again!"

Kinda hyped about the Smash tournament, though. Smart move to hype up the game that looks better and is coming out later - make the WIi U version the one people really want, but the 3DS version the one that's available to whet your appetite.

They'll have a conference next year when they show off the new console. No point in having one this year when all they have to show is 3ds games and another smash brothers trailer.

While I would prefer a live conference, I wouldn't mind a ND. I just care about the games and hopefully they'll show/announce noteworthy ones.

With regard to the video, I thought it was corny but in a good way.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
Soo...I believe that PR cleared up any confusion about Smash Wii U- sounds pretty clearly like 2014 to me

Brilliant video. Hopefully they utilise youtube with the livestream like they have done in previous directs, to prevent the awful stream problems last year. Shame there's no conference, I do like the spectacle.

God damn, they better not only use Ustream again this year. It was the worst quality stream I've seen in years.

Also, by only doing an online stream they're definitely going to miss out on a ton of more "mainstream" buzz and viewers. Only Nintendo fans will probably tune in like last year, since it won't be playing elsewhere on the internet or TV. My PS/Xbox owning friends (who don't really follow Nintendo apart from watching them during E3) literally thought Nintendo didn't show up till I told them otherwise.

They've been using Youtube as well as Ustream for all their recent Directs. I'd expect the same thing to happen at E3.

Not necessarily.

Yes necessarily.

PR:

"Every year, Nintendo looks for the best way to show its games and share its news with fans, media and other key audiences. In 2013, Nintendo decided to forgo a traditional press conference and use a video – in that case a Nintendo Direct – to share its news from E3. The company is building on that approach at E3 2014 with the "Nintendo Digital Event," a new kind of video program that will reveal and provide further detail about the gaming experiences on the way for Nintendo platforms in 2014 and beyond. The Nintendo Digital Event will air at 9 a.m. PT on Tuesday, June 10."

"Building on that approach" = No actual pre-E3 press conference.

Can we put a countdown timer and a timezone conversion chart in the OP?

Now, I know most of you expect me to defend this, but Nintendo running a digital stream instead of a conference is a bad idea, a very bad idea.

I'm waiting for the "Nintendo skips E3" crap again. They needed the conference for the media to give a crap. It's all about image, unfortunately, and Nintendo skipping the middleman again causes the middleman to get annoyed and thus the cycle begins again.

where is this quote from?

A press release I found in my e-mail :p

To be content, all I need is Zelda U.
Hmm, then again a Majoras Mask re-make would be a lovely optional extra. Bah, just gimme plenty of Zelda please. Kthx.

I prefer the digital events I think. No awkward pauses, no random people yelling things in the audience, a much more concise presentation. Don't have to hear "AND NOW, NINTENDO DEVELOPER, SHIGERU MIYAMOTO *dubstep music plays*"
I feel the same. I'm so over E3 press conferences. They come off as fake now since they want to "win" E3 in the eyes of the press and blogs.

Well it's definitly more entertaining than the usual "This E3 is going to be orgastic, just you wait!!!" we are hit with each year.

I liked this.

Digital Event (Nintendo Direct) or live conference doesn't matter. You're getting the same announcements and information either way.

There is gif potential in Reggie refusing that glass of water, just add a game or game console and have him refuse it

I predict you will get both. And Wii U zelda will take place in termina.

Either Zelda U will take inspiration from Majoras Mask or take place in the child timeline, as a Majora sequel or a new story. I have doubts on it taking place in Termina again. MM3D will definitely come, Grezzo hasn't worked on something significant since 2011 (the only thing since was a Streetpass game).

Hmm, I wonder if there's any difference between a Nintendo Direct and this Nintendo Digital Event thing?

"A New Kind of Video Program" ?

I'm guessing it's a direct, but they're calling it something else to make it sound a bit more monumentous, exclusive or something.

To an extent, I agree. However, unfortunately, it's about image and Nintendo not hosting a conference gives the media the wrong image which spreads and spreads.

True. Sucks though, pretty much confirms that a live conference won't happen anytime soon and those were funny.

And about that Digital Event: look, as long as the content is good I'm okay with it; but please, Nintendo, don't use Ustream and give us a range of options to watch your show

Again, they mention the Nokia Theater in the video, saying that's where the Smash tournament will be held at E3. That suggests a conference to me.

From JoeM86's post above:

Nintendo Digital Event
Every year, Nintendo looks for the best way to show its games and share its news with fans, media and other key audiences. In 2013, Nintendo decided to forgo a traditional press conference and use a video – in that case a Nintendo Direct – to share its news from E3. The Nintendo Digital Event will air at 9 a.m. PT on Tuesday, June 10.

From that wording, it sounds to me like a new kind of Direct will be happening in place of Press Conference this year.

BTW L~A, you have 9 PM rather than AM in your OP. :)

bish gets all the credit :)
No press conference is a dumb dumb idea, once again. E3 is all about who can get the most hype from the mainstream media. Not having a PC sounds like you don't care.

I'm disappointed this probably isn't a press conference.

I don't want to sound mean at all, but can I ask you (and others) why?
I mean: it's not that we usually are there at the live conf: we watch a video with our PC/TV where they talk/present/announce games. Is it really SO important if it is a live event or a recorded video?
I understand that the Live event has crowd that can booooo or cheer, but for example a Direct could easily cut some pause, dead moment and so on, concentrating even more contents in the same timeframe.
Last here we had announcements for MK8, Smash, Mario3D, and DKTF, probably Zelda LBW and updates on many games with videos, and so on. It wasn't a "weaker" E3, to me.
The negativity came from the bad reception of Mario3D (that lasted until the second trailer shown later in the year) and from the fact that people wanted Retro's new game to be Metroid and not DK.
But that would have been the same in a Live conf, to me.

Just my two cents :)
