PS4 System Update 1.70 is Live

Is there a way on PS4 to record something that just happened or am I limited to only being able to record what's about to happen?

The share button? ;) seriously though take a look at the short tutorial they have provided in the share menu. It outlines the two methods you have of recording video.

Would love to switch the numbers for a swedish layout with Å, Ä and Ö. :(

Oh yes, this. It's so annoying that there is a Swedish input language option but no Swedish keyboard layout. Typing out a message in Swedish is a damn chore, you have to keep going in and out of that "special characters" menu all the time.

Well why the hell not??

I can't think of a single device that will automatically install firmware. Consoles, network equipment, copiers, phones, all are manual. Imagine if you lost power or something during that installation? There's a nice brick for ya. It's two minutes out of your time to install it, so it's not a big deal

I was just going by the instructions it gave me, which were:
-Press quickly to take a screenshot
- Hold to go to menu
-Press twice to start recording

Automatically installing new firmwares to your consumers devices that may add, remove, or modify features or how those features work, sounds illegal. Pretty sure Sony would have gotten sued if the Linux PS3 Removal Firmware was automatically installed even if you opted into the program.

xbone does it (since the last update). So do other devices like the Chromecast. I mean, I can see why Sony may not want to go down that road but it is clearly possible and likely not illegal

Android App 1.7 has been pushed since last night. FYI.

Really odd decision for them to update iOS side first, given that they sell Android products. =/

EDIT: Oops, read that wrong. The update was in the Play store, it just hadn't updated itself automatically.

Yes. The controller has bad battery life because they put a small battery in there, not because the LED is using a large amount of power.

"Bad" battery life? Okay, I know we were super happy (and maybe spoiled) by the dual shock 3's battery life, but my DS4 lasts roughly a little more than 6 hours on a full charge. I'm never going to play 6 consecutive hours of gaming without taking a break to go make a meal or something, so it's not like I cant just plug the controller back in when I take a quick break.

So my PS3 has a lot of HDCP handshake issues (and/or the HDMI port is busted) and there's a lot of flickering, but thankfully my PS4 never had that issue...until after this patch.

Disabling HDCP fixes the flickering issue, but now I can't use Netflix. What do I do??

Yeah, or at the very last allow the light to be super dim. Just enough to know that controller is on, but nothing more. The "dim" setting is still quite bright.

Thankfully I purchased those decals from Ebay that made the light look "cool"

Those LED lights were actively making me angry with how fucking pointless they are, I would play a game in my basement on my plasma and it was just ridiculous how distracting it was

Yes, 'bad' is probably the wrong word to use. Horrendous would be a better choice. I don't own any other console with wireless controllers that can't go a week of solid gaming before needing a charge.

So you don't own a Wii-U, PS3, Xbox 360, or Xbox One then. Got it.

Well the system is suppossed to automagically record the last 15 minutes of gameplay, or you could manually start recording. The "last 15 min of gameplay" thing has been very spotty at best for a ton of people. I know it doesn't really work that great for me, last time I checked it.

By the way I used to be a receiver guy all the way, but I have to say the Sonos 5.1 system is amazing. I have not missed my receiver set-up once, and I get the added benefit of playing music through the Sonos and Spotify.

Many receivers has a Spotify client built-in though, likewise with many TVs.

Im having audio issues now, the sound is coming in and out and never done that before until this update. Any solutions?

I have a samsung 5.1 reciever and my PS4 goes thru hdmi and optical frm PS4 to receiver

Look for firmware updates for the receiver. Why don't you use HDMI sound instead of sound through the optical?

That seems strange considering the PS4 has two USB 3.0 ports.

But does the USB stick/HD you connect to it support USB 3.0 then? Otherwise that speed would be significantly lower.

Is there a way on PS4 to record something that just happened or am I limited to only being able to record what's about to happen?

Share button, then the square button.

Checked if there are new firmwares for the TV (and receiver if you use that). What TV (and receiver?) do you use?

I assume they submitted them both at the same time and had to wait for google and apples cert process to clear them

Guess I should post here that the Momentus XT model ST95005620AS works now, and I read others had issues with other Momentus XTs as well, so if you were wanting to use one of these in your PS4, you should try it.

The PS4 is always recording the last x minutes of gameplay. If you hold it should take you to the share menu. Press square to save that last x minutes of gameplay. Alternatively you can select the upload option and export it to Facebook without saving it to your PS4 HD.

TV: Pioneer KRP-500m
Receiver: Denon AVR-1713

Both with latest firmware.

I don't understand why this would be an issue since it worked fine before and HDCP was mandatory pre-patch.

I shared Child of Light on FB last night (before 1.70) and there was no sound either.

There: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10202882461516808 (tell me if you can view it)

yes, same for Dynasty Warriors 8. But that game never had sound when exporting to begin with.

I've been hearing others say the same thing. Seems like what happened to "Dead Nation" when it first released.

Well that sucks, can't share a bit of this beautiful soundtrack :(

Thank you for your answers.

What's with the holding? That's the alternate sharing controls, right? I just press the button to open the Share menu, and I'm pretty sure I haven't changed that setting.

Facebook vs USB video capture quality

44.1 vs 48 kHz audio
1.64 vs 4.9 Mbit/sec bitrate

The fine details are blurred out a lot more with the Facebook download.

That's great news. 5 Mb/sec @ 720p is very good quality.

Sorry, I thought you were asking if we could hear sound in a newer recording you had just posted.
No worries :)
should be easily fixed. developer has the ability to turn off audio. for example nba 2k14 does this because it includes licensed music tracks. complain to ubi

MGSV: GZ contains licensed music tracks (ex: Here's to you) and I can listen to it on my iDroid while playing and recording with no problem :)

Anyone know if 5.1 works on Netflix now?

Of all things, I was most interested to see if Video Capturing using the Share button was fixed. I tested it with Killzone as I've had issues with that game consistently. Im still not sure if the video share bug is specific game related. I changed my video capture duration to 3 minutes. I also rebuilt the database on the PS4 before installing 1.70.

First try:
-Loaded Killzone
-Played for over 3 minutes and pressed Share
-The screen capture saved, but no video saved. In fact, the video showing in the preview was from the Trials Fusion demo, a video capture I had made days before on the old firmware.

Second try:
-Restarted Killzone
-Played for over 3 minutes and pressed Share
-Video was captured with a length of 2:14. Luckily it captured the END of the video, which is usually what I want and what it used to consistantly miss, but strangely had a random start point.

Third try:
-Restarted Killzone
-Played for over 3 minutes and pressed Share
-Video was captured with a length of 2:07. Once again it captured all the way to the moment I pressed Share, but just has a random start point.

I can live with this as it's certainly an improvement, but it boggles the mind why they can't get this fixed. Im wondering if there are other weird bugs or differences if you choose a different capture duration?

The way they handled HDCP off is utterly dumb, btw. It should automatically kick on when viewing content that requires it.

The way they kept talking about it made it seem like it would do just that. They kept saying "turn off HDCP for games," not "turn off HDCP for everything and lock you out of other apps until you turn it on." They've got some work to do on that one. It's a first step at least.

Apps might have to be updated to work that way. I mean maybe that's what is supposed to happen, but not until they are updated.

Apps like Netflix can't be updated cause that would allow users to capture off Netlfix which is illegal. Sony can simply include a white list of all the available apps on the Store that requires HDCP to be ON and have the feature enabled when any of the apps on that list is being used. Once you exit, the HDCP should go back to the default settings which is OFF.

Probably ipart of the licensing. I'm sure Kanye wants a penny every time you broadcast his stuff. Limit the amount of work they need to do with YouTube takedowns and the like.

I think that is what he meant.
