1ST PLACE WINNER:
Deadly Class #4 written by Rick Remender; pencils by Wes Craig; colors by Lee Loughridge; published by Image Comics (16 points)

2ND PLACE FINISHER:
*TIE* Batman Eternal #1 written by Scott Snyder & James Tynion IV; pencils by Jason Fabok; colors by Brad Anderson; published by DC Comics (10 points)
*TIE* Southern Bastards #1 written by Jason Aaron; pencils/colors by Jason Latour; published by Image Comics (10 points)
*TIE* Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye #28 written by James Roberts; pencils by Alex Milne; colors by Josh Burcham; published by IDW Publishing (10 points)

Here's How It Works
In the last week of the month (or earlier, if you're confident about your choices), any GAF member can send me a private message with their personal picks for the three best single issues released that month, from any publisher. These picks should be arranged in order of rank -- first, second, and third place -- and each ranking will be worth a specific point value. A first place ranking for a comic is worth 5 points; a second place is worth 3 points; a third place, 2 points. Then before next month's COMICS! OT goes live, I'll tally the results and point values from each ballot, and post the top three overall winners in the next OP as last month's, GAF-approved, best of the best. Then, maybe at the end of the year, we'll have a showdown between the year's top finishers or something similar.

A Sample Ballot
This is an example of how a sample ballot submitted by you might look. You don't have to use this formatting but I do ask that, however you send it to me, you are CLEAR on which comics you are voting for and in what order they are ranked.

Average GAF Member said:
1st Place: "Super-Fun Team Adventures" #14 (Mystery Comics; story by Jack Johnson, art by John Jackson) [worth 5 points.]
2nd Place: "Children's Bedtime Stories, Only With Nudity and Cursing" #69 (Happy Puppy Publishing; story by Jane Doe, art by John Doelner) [worth 3 points.]
3rd Place: "Grimdark, Extreme, and McDarkerson" #474 (Amazing Comics; story & art by Smitty Smithengen) [worth 2 points.]

The Voting Rules
1. Only single issues released that month are to be considered for voting; no trade collections, and no "just caught up" considerations for issues released one/two/however many months ago. Sorry if this excludes you from the voting process, trade-only readers and mail-order folk. I didn't see any other way.
2. Each GAF member is allowed one ballot, and once that ballot has been cast you are done for the month. If an issue comes out and you think it's the best comic you've ever read or will ever read, but you already cast your vote the week before, that's too bad. In other words, there are no take-backs so VOTE THOUGHTFULLY.
3. Three comics per ballot, and no more. You could send me a list of the ten best comics that month, with full paragraph summaries on why you ranked them in what order; but in the end, I'm only going to tally points for the top three and ignore the rest. You CAN pick just one book as the best that month... but that one vote is still worth only 5 points.
4. No ties on the ballots, please. You have to pick three comics as the best that month, and you have to rank them "1st, 2nd, 3rd" so that I can assign points to each. If you're torn between two issues of two different series as the best that month, and you can't decide which one you loved more than the other, TRY.
5. To make things a bit easier on me when it comes to making the OP, I'm establishing a deadline for casting ballots of 10pm Eastern Standard Time on the last day of the month. You can cast your ballot at any time during the month that you wish; however once that deadline has passed, any ballots sent to me will be ignored.
6. Again, to make things easier I would prefer that your votes be cast via private message sent to me, rather than through an open post in the OT. In addition to keeping the voting process a secret, using the PM method means I won't have to search through thread pages for someone's vote posted as an afterthought to an unrelated discussion.

Failure to comply with any of the above rules MAY result in your ballot getting thrown out.

Other rules and stipulations may follow, but for now we'll roll with these for the first round and see how it goes. Have fun voting!

Spoilers. In the age of digital comics, they are increasingly becoming an issue in these threads, as the drive to be first to discuss the week's releases overrides common sense and good posting etiquette. So over the coming weeks and months, the members of Comic GAF will be collaborating on and will eventually be implementing a system of general rules for avoiding spoilers on new comics in the Comics OT thread. But for now, please abide by the temporary guidelines outlined below. And remember, you are being watched and judged by your peers.

1. Discussion of newly released comics that involves specific plot details shall be accompanied at all times by the appropriate use of the
tag function.
2. Direct posting of full-page images from newly released comics using the tags is strictly prohibited, and outgoing links to such should be accompanied by the appropriate spoiler warnings.
3. Direct posting of images or spoilers from comics that have yet to be released is strictly prohibited, and outgoing links to such should be accompanied by the appropriate spoiler warnings.
4. Covers, solicitation copy, and/or promotional materials shall not be considered spoilers and are allowed, unless their content involves specific plot details; in those cases, outgoing links with spoiler warnings should be used.
5. The unmarked posting of spoilers related to comics will be allowed after a period of one week (Wednesday to Wednesday) from that comic's release. (NOTE: Longer? -Spike)
6. Members of Comic GAF are expected at all times to exercise common sense and polite discretion as a matter of courtesy to fellow posters. I know, tough one.
7. If you are unsure of whether or not posting something would constitute a spoiler, err on the side of caution and use the
tags.

In short, don't be Stephanie Brown. Don't be... The Spoiler. For one thing, you're not that loveable. >:|

So i just finished The Siege bundle the cross over event from a few years back, my dad liked it and wanted me to get the crossover event that ties into it and the one after for a sense of continuity so which ones am i looking at im assuming that Civil War is the Prequel of sorts and What comes after? Im looking for full series books that i can get on amazon since individual would most likely cost too much.

Good OT! I totally forgot about a Deadly Hands of Kung Fu series, i'm so there. Also, Firestar is an X-Man?! I'm there too!

not many other new series i'm anticipating this month aside from COWL and Bee & Puppycat. I'll probably stumble into something though
+MPH #1 by Mark Millar and Duncan Fegredo (May 21). The Millarworld continues to expand with a new miniseries that's sure to become a major motion picture! When a group of homeless teens uncover a cache of the latest drug to hit the streets, they quickly discover it grants each of them the power of super-speed. not this though. of fucking course it's sure to become a movie

Nope, not even Greg Rucka returning to Marvel can get me to read a Cyclops book.

C.O.W.L. and Trees are the only new series I'm picking up.

Alright... Superman's story in Secret Origin #1 was really, really good. I wasn't sure what I was expecting but they managed to craft a very compelling dual narrative and a version of the
Bat through the Window
, with a twist, that is perfect for Clark.

So how was Amazing Spiderman and what are some realistic expectations (in terms of overall quality) for it given the team?
Haven't really kept up, but I love Peter.

Don't expect much.

Do be excited by what the future has in store.

Thinking about halting USM after this X-Men crossover and reading through Ultimate X-Men before I read the last 70 issues or so of USM.

Just cuz people said USM is better...I'd rather end on a high note than downgrading to X-Men afterward.

Thoughts?

It was fun and set up a new status-quo for Peter. It was just a set up chapter though.

Did a long post in the other thread before I realised it was over. Here you go:

I think I wanna read that book.

That's from Young Justice, you'd love it. Light fare, character based, very quick to get on with the in-jokes and cuteness. I enjoyed it as a lad.

also re: CBR - in my years on the interwebs I've dipped my toes into a few comics discussion places and I think CGAF is one of the friendliest, most level headed and fun places I've found. In general, large groups of comics fans tend to make me cringe, they're always a lot dumber than I'd have hoped. But you guys are good people.

COMICS! I actually didn't mean to read anything last night but got sucked into a few books before bed:

Uncanny Avengers: I forgot this last week so caught up. Amazing stuff, Remender's batshit crazy alternate future supergroup is so much fun. I think with Eimin it strays a bit too far (as it has for the whole run, really) into "I have all these grand things to say" - nobody talks like that apart from baddies in comics. Still, it's a good book brimming with imagination. Although since I didn't grow up steeped in Marvel continuity I have literally no idea who any of Kang's group are except for the old Psylocke and Doom. That the story works at all for me is impressive.

Avengers 28: great, I was wondering what the point in the past few issues was, now it seems to be coming into focus. The structure of this entire run is very odd really but I'm finding it interesting - the first half was all about Infinity with the New Avengers stuff as a bubbling subplot. Now Infinity has wrapped, the NA plot is taking centre stage. Very neat.

All New X-Men: doing exactly what I want this book to do - characters talking about stuff. Having Immonen is such a treat, I love his work so much. His kid Iceman is perfect, he always looks so cute and cheeky. I also thought he did a good job with X23, there were a good few panels where she looked so much like Wolverine, I thought that was clever. Last page was YAAAAAAAY. This sounds really weird but there is something ... alluring about
Big Molly
. I kinda want her to squeeze me.

Batman vs Bane: I really don't know why I picked this up. GAF hype? It was a solid 2/5. Reminded me very strongly indeed of a 90s comic, maybe it was the colours which were very bland and washed out, maybe it was the very standard art, I dunno. So yeah, not so much a story as a sequence of events I thought. At the end I was left wondering what the point in this was.

Why would you want to do a thing like that? Read any issues of UltXM that cross over with Spidey but otherwise you can safely ignore it - it really wasn't that good. Pretty much just make sure you read anything that has Bendis and Ultimate universe and you'll be fine. Like Ultimate Six, super important in the USM story.

Actually, if you want more Ultimate stuff, check out the first 24 issues of Ult FF (and NO MORE ferchrissakes) so some Ellis/Millar goodness. Also Ellis's Ultimate Nightmare trilogy was excellent. Ultimate Origins was OK but becomes relevant to Spidey towards the end of Pete's run so I'd say it's worth it. The Ultimate Doom trilogy was good and leads right into Hickman's Ultimates run which is also worth reading for the amazing art.

Basically you should wiki the Ult universe or something.

I feel like I've written the word "Ultimate" too much.

I really enjoyed UXM for a long time. It was different enough to 616 X-Men that it felt very fresh. Then it went seriously downhill.

So, yesterdays books:

Deadly Class: Flawlessly executed, but I couldn't care less about the characters or the world they inhabit. Time to drop this.

Batman Eternal: I have to say that I enjoyed the DC house style of the first 3 issues more than this. It fit the general tone of the story better.

Black Science: Great end of the first arc. It still feels like a big setup for the second arc (more than a self-contained story) but I don't mind. The art grew on me immensely.

Batman vs. Bane: That issue felt exactly as out of context as it is.
I mean, a few pages of hand-to-hand combat and everything's okay again? Wat?

Alright so since none of y'all have an opinion on Stray Bullets, what about the Oz series by Skottie Young and Eric Shanower?

Has anyone in here read it and recommends it?

Those Oz books are fantastic, Skottie Young is the perfect artist to bring L. Frank Baum's characters to life. None of them are brand new stories, Shanower adapted the existing Baum stories to fit the comic format. My wife has read all of the original Oz stories multiple times and the comics are pretty much her favorite comic book series ever.
I highly recommend those books (or the omnibus if that's what you're looking at).

Amazing Spider-Man 1

Loved it! Story? Spectacular! Art? Astonishing! Every page was more Sensational than the last. Peter Parker truly is the Superior Spider-Man!

In all honesty, I didn't think that much of it. Slott seems determined to make sure that Peter and Anna-Maria have the most awkward breakup ever committed to paper. His order of events is questionable too Black Cat apologies before chewing out the Avengers? At least now it has the number of wisecracks I expect from a Spider-Book.

So i just started with Saga vol. 1.

Finished the first couple chapters, and i really enjoying it so far!

Do they keep up the quality? Worth it to keep reading this one or is there a drop like in some many comics after the first couple issues...?

I've heard decent things about it and I figured I might as well go for it. I know Spider Man is generally liked better but I don't have much experience with X-Men. Hell, I just got Days of Future Past and even though I didn't like it much I couldn't help but love the characters. I'd love to dive into a 100 issue series and get a general feel of the X-Men, even if it is the "Ultimate" version.

I really enjoyed UXM for a long time. It was different enough to 616 X-Men that it felt very fresh. Then it went seriously downhill.
I have the same opinion, Ultimate X-Men was really good.
The only reason I remember Ultimate X-Men is because it has one of the best solo Gambit stories of all time which doesn't revolve around a love interest.

Sounds great. I'm really looking forward to it.

Speaking of X-Men, what are the best trades I can get for them? I have House of M and Messiah Complex on my list of "to buy" trades but am always looking to add more.

Messiah Compley is part of a Event Trilogy about the return of Hope, so I recommend you to read Messiah War and Second Coming, too. While I am not so much into X-Men, I read them all and thought it was absolut fantastic.

And I think, Divided We Stand is also a follow up of Messiah Complex, but I didnt read it.

Weren't Kyle and Yost taking over Amazing X-men with #7? Has that been pushed back?

The Immonen issue sounds fun.

Dark Phoenix Saga
God Loves, Man Kills

The best of the 90s stuff would probably be Age of Apocalypse.

So i just started with Saga vol. 1.

Finished the first couple chapters, and i really enjoying it so far!

Do they keep up the quality? Worth it to keep reading this one or is there a drop like in some many comics after the first couple issues...?

The quality doesn't drop, it's still a whacky adventure book.

Today at lunchtime I read some Justice League Beyond which after the first couple of issues I'm not sure about yet. I have the first 6 so I'll carry on. I'm up to Power Girl in Ame-Comi girls and I'm enjoying myself. Lovely art in a bizarro world where everyone appears to be a girl. Really mixed signals though. On one level it's a story for teenage girls but it's drawn for teenage boys.

Then I got bored and bought the first volume of Strangers in Paradise which I liked a lot but it's not something I could mainline. I might keep an eye out for sales with that one but I do want to read the rest. Then I bought volume 1 of Rachel Rising but I haven't started that yet. I never did finish Echo either. Might get the last few volumes of that I need.

Even crippled I still like Comixology. I just added the homepage as an icon to my iPad.

I wasn't to crazy about the beginning of Amazing Spider-Man #1, felt forced to be funny and a random start to it.. but once I read the whole issue I thought it was much better overall. We'll see how Parker handles all Doc Ock's old asshole ways..

Black Science is awesome,, such a beauty..
Might not be around much longer seeing how everyone is dying!?

Deadly Class.. This was a fun issue. Purrty colors.

Did anyone pick up Dream Police #1? I started reading it last night fell asleep tho. The guy who runs my LCS was telling me about it last month and he had Dream Police #0 on hand (It was published by Marvel Comics, on June 22, 2005, under their Icon imprint for creator-owned titles.).
Its a pretty cool idea curious to get through #1.

"Joe and Frank have been partners for as long as they can remember, patrolling the alternate universe of dreams, nightmares, and the great void beyond, an alternate but very real dimension of changelings, echoes, wisps, ethers, and nightwalkers, those that died in their sleep and wander the dreamscape forever."

It is still fantastic. Fiona Staples is wonderful.

I read vol 3 the other day and am still just as in love with it as when I first started.

So, yesterdays books:

Batman Eternal: I have to say that I enjoyed the DC house style of the first 3 issues more than this. It fit the general tone of the story better.

I am in the opposite boat. I'm actually pretty sold on Batman Eternal's weekly story now, but that Fabok art was a real bummer. Nguyen's art is always dynamic and a hell of a lot more interesting to look at than Fabok's dreary muscleman shit. Fabok's Bullock bothers me.

Shocking that Toccinni is the artist behind the most hideous and incoherent Uncanny X-Force issues. Low looks damn good.

Nguyen just gets the life choked out of him when inked. I can see the good art under there, I mean, his painted stuff is flat out jaw dropping, but his inked pages are p. wack.

Looks to be a great month. Looking forward to the return of Saga, the Chew/Revival crossover, C.O.W.L. and motherfucking ARMOR HUNTERS.

It was such a tonal shift from the dark and gritty of the first three issues to the more vivid version in the fourth, made it hard for me to get back into the story. Of course they have to have multiple artists and writers on a weekly title and I'll get used to it.
Also, I don't read many books with DC house style so maybe that's why I am not fed up with it.

A word of advice about UXM. Bail before you reach the Robert Kirkman downfall. That was when the book turned to rubbish. So that is to say, get the volumes till 13 and stop. SERIOUSLY, I can not emphasize this enough!!

Also if you are a fan of character work then read Peter David's X-Factor (2005-2013). Really consistent all throughout and the pay-off is amazing in the end. Buy one volume to see if you like the writing: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0785154388/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Don't focus on the art as the artists' keep changing a lot so base your decision on the writing.
