Nintendo E3 2014 - discussion thread for their E3 plans

Between last E3 and now we got a lot of really high qualitiy games. If they can repeat that i have nothing to fear. If you ignore the first 6 months i am actually impressed with the lineup so far. I have seen far worse in the last 20 years. ^^

I think Zelda U is gonna be epic. Imo Nintendo at this point can't afford it not to be and they know it. With ALBW Aonuma showed that he is very much aware of what fans want and it can only be better in the home console. Also Nintendo first party have shown again and again that they are very capable of pushing the hardware and create products that look and run better than the hardware would make you initially believe.
I think it will be very hard and a true shock if Zelda U isn't good.

Elsewhere i'm pretty sure that we will get more Smash, X and Zelda Warriors stuff and maybe actual footage of SMTxFE and Yoshi's Yarn.

I don't know about new IP's but i'm more than certain Retro is working on the next Metroid, whether they announce it or show some early stuff or none of the above is to be seen, but it sure isn't far into development to show anything complete.

I don't expect too much on the handheld front, i believe they need to push WiiU now and imo they'll show the new handheld next year and their next big hitters (like 3D Mario handheld) will be shown along the new hardware when it's announced.

Even if we just see footage of all the titles already announced and also the announcement of Zelda U which is a certain, i can say i'm happy.

Also i believe we'll finally get dates for Bayo 2, Smash U, maybe Zelda Warriors and my own personal estimation of an Oct/Nov release date for Zelda U like it happened with Mario 3DW (first announcement at E3 and Fall/Winter release).

I predict 2.5D Zelda, think of the neutral camera position in Mario 3D World. It's not a secret that the demand is there for the style in OoT, TP and the Wii U tech demo. However since Aonuma mentioned multiplayer and after playing 3D World it makes the most sense to me. Unless he's talking about Galaxy's girlfriend mode or a mode separate from single player. There's X for those who want that type of experience, with customization, expansive & detailed fields to explore and a more "epic" adventure/storyline. I can see it go both ways and I don't mind either, but I'm hoping for a game that complements X instead of trying to be more like it. In other words I want a happy, whimsical puzzelda with a colorful artstyle and blocky geometry, think of the Pikmin minigame in Nintendo Land.

A mario kart dlc with new levels from nintendo games like zelda, kirby etc.. or even sonic level with loops could be nice. (including music mix from the original related game songs)
Each level comes with a new character to choose from.

Could be a nice twist.

Would be my worst case scenario of Zelda...

Wow, that's pretty much my nightmare Zelda. And the sad thing is I could see it happen. Really hope it doesn't.

But let's not let it get in the way of hype.

This is the..

I will hold onto X and Bayonetta 2 like a mantra, but I am really looking to see if Nintendo has any intention of stopping their flush toward irrelevancy. They need to stop pandering to people who think five million games with Mario in it constitutes an acceptable lineup, because it's stifling their growth now.

yep. the stuff they have for their quality of life platforms will be interesting (well, theoretically). i think that's where miyamoto's secret team probably went.

the idea of two nintendo hardware platforms with mostly the same games (so what smash bros. 4 is, except across everything they do) would force them to come up with new stuff anyway, or at least dig further into their past for inspiration. i don't think people would be up in arms about another marvelous or star tropics, for instance, despite having been established over a decade ago.

I hate to pile on but that sounds awful, just dreadful.

Camera will be important in the next Zelda, though. I hope they use a lot of interesting camera angles like in OoT. I loved that about that game, the camera was imaginative.

I'm sticking a pin at '4' levels of satisfaction on that chart. I think we're in for a treat.

How great Will Zelda U be? Anybody?

The first dedicated HD Zelda constructed from the ground up to take advantage of Wii U's power, MIiverse and Gamepad features?

Might be alright, I suppose.

The press has interpreted some of Aonuma's comments as suggestive of a static or overhead Zelda U. I'm in two minds about that. I've wanted a new, original, overhead Zelda as good as Link to the Past and Link's Awakening since those games were made (Minish Cap was great but not quite up there, Link Between Worlds was fantastic but still more or less 50% remake). Wii U's power could give us something really special in that regard. But I also want an immersive, drop-dead gorgeous 3D adventure to lose myself in, and I honestly think Nintendo will be crucified if they don't deliver precisely that.

Either way, I'll be happy, but it's important for Nintendo and Wii U that everyone is happy.

I just desperately want them to showcase new IPs and gameplay ideas. I'm so dreadfully tired of yet another genre with Mario in it or Samus in it or Donkey Kong in it or Link in it. I just want them to shoot for the stars, brand new bold IPs with big budgets and big marketing pushes. They've got nothing really to lose.

Let's acknowledge that Mario sells. Wonderful 101 did not sell.

To back up your point, when I think of it, Aonuma wanted to "rethink Zelda". Basically, I feel like it will be some sort of NES "The Legend of Zelda" reboot.

i'm torn. on one hand, i think that it would be a pretty solid game and probably better than any 3d thing they could put out there (especially if they're pushing a multiplayer aspect). on the other hand, they have to realize that the audience who mostly buys zelda now is in the west and those people really like their ocarina of times and twilight princesses. if they go the 2.5d route, they'll have to play up the presentation angle like crazy, regardless of how intricate the game design and good the dungeons are.

no matter what they do, i personally would prefer a little iteration and refinement. that's what made twilight princess work- it was a great refinement of the ocarina of time formula. i love that the team tries to experiment and deliver brand new concepts every single time, but sometimes it feels like we get prototypes for fuller ideas.

On the Wii U side of things, I'm expecting a new Zelda trailer and nothing more. No other game announcements or new IPs. Besides Mario Galaxy HD.

Not like it matters. They already won E3 with the Smash invitational/Smash demo at Best Buy.

I have to agree a little bit.
However i would not mind to see a zelda spinoff like zelda 2 on 3ds which is for the most 2.5D.

I wasn´t to excited at first but after i saw what they pulled of with 3DWorld, DKTF, Pikmin and MK8.. i can´t wait to see it. They are on a roll right now. I´ll take two things for granted now: It will have awesome lighting and even more important - outstanding music!

If I like the new Zelda I'll be satisfied. I think it's certain that this will be announced there. Titles like SSB, X, Bayonetta and Hyrule Warriors and maybe Yarn Yoshi will be shown too, most of them at a more finalised state. And that's pretty much all the stuff that you can easily expect. That's the basic stuff. Other than that there will be probably 2-3 new "big" games along with smaller ones like indies. The new games will likely be a new IP, a Metroid/F-Zero or even something else like a reboot of a series like StarFox or Advance Wars or some remakes like MM. Maybe Pokken too.

Imo a Zelda with a Diablo like isometric view would be awesome, but not on their mainline Zelda on a struggling console. Now they need exactly what the majority or the fanbase wants otherwise they will gather too much, undeserved imo, negativity.
I'm always for new ways of presenting their IP's, but not this time, not right now.

It's not gonna be live, so it's automatically not gonna be on par with TP.

the tp reveal was something else, and the circumstances leading up to it aren't present here. the wii u isn't stigmatized as a bad kiddie console in a sea of good mature games (which are good because they are mature). everyone has accepted cel-shaded zelda as a thing and lots of people actually like it. people also aren't expecting a sequel to the wind waker like they were in 2004, and even then that was rumored. we know that there will be a zelda reveal this year. so no surprise factor either.

the only thing that would probably get a decent reaction would be the game twilight princess was supposed to be, where the world ends flooded.

the tp reveal was really a perfect storm when it came to expectations. this is decidedly less so.

I think Zelda Wii U will get people really excited and will be very good. A Link Between Worlds was already a step in the right direction for the Zelda series. (Dungeons in any order, more emphasis on exploration.) And I think Zelda Wii U will continue on that step.

But the art style will divide the fanbase again.

Well, i made a bingo card and i advise everyone to make one too.

Just to explain a little bit: i think the digital event will be brilliant. It really will be "The one you have been waiting for"

But i also know Nintendo will spend "precious minutes" talking about games we already know more than we need to

We´ve seen this with pikmin 3
We´ve seen this with Tropical Freeze
We see this every direct with hours and hours spend on Professor Layton games that are all the same
We will see this with Mario kart 8, a game that appear every single nintendo event for the past year, just got a 38 minutes direct and will probably be, somehow, present on Nintendo Digital Event

I wonder what the team behind NSMB2 for 3DS is working on, didn't Miyamoto or Iwata say that it was a new young team they made specifically for that game, while the old team was developing NSMBU?

If artstyle is dividing the fanbase..they are not in the fanbase to begin with.

At this point i practically expect another perplexing 3rd party collaboration to be announced, just do to the number they seem to be pursuing.

Nintendo need to deliver with the Zelda trailer. It's been an long time since Nintendo unveiled a game with a bang. Their initial unveil trailers these days usually have quite dull music and show new basic elements of the game being used in an area which give nothing away.

For example the unveil trailers for Skyword Sword and Super Mario 3D World were damp squids compared to the Hollywood unveil of Twilight Princess. I want to feel a buzz right from the start again.

Absolutely.

The great majority of this event will be more footage of games we already know. Hyrule Warriors, X, Bayo 2, Smash, Yarn Yoshi and hopefully SMTxFE. That's just how Nintendo rolls.

I think this might be the year we see New Super Metroid for 3DS, as well as a new 2D Mario that is not a NSMB game.

Yes, the main problem is that the reveal trailers nowadays are mostly gameplay trailers, not story/cutscene trailers. It's just gameplay with some quiet level music in the background, coupled with some sub-par editing. The Hyrule warriors trailer was a joke editing-wise. They need to hire the best.

They were a lot better at trailers back in 2005-2007!

I'm kinda interested in their NFC title. They could use cards, figurines or some other crazy stuff.

So...

- Zelda Wii U
- NFC game reveal
- Bayonetta 2
- X
- Hyrule Warriors
- Smash Bros. Trailer

For sure.

On the 3DS front, it's going to be interesting.

While I agree 100%, knowing Nintendo they won't be doing that. I'm tempted to buy a Wii U just for Mario Kart but part of me doesn't want to support Nintendo any longer until they start being more creative and risks with new franchises.

But that would mean no Metroid!

Metroid isn't happening on Wii U. I'd be shocked if we saw any more high budget projects for the system at this point, besides Zelda.

It'll be Mario sports titles and Kirby games until the thing dies a slow, painful death in 2017.

It was rushed wording from me. I wouldn't have exptected anything literally on par with the TP ravings. Obviously, back then we were all just coming from the godawful Wind Waker and no one thought that we'd all of a sudden be introduced to the OoT 2.0 people were expecting since 2001. However, if they manage to have their first HD Zelda look as grand as the tech demo (which is another topic to begin with, it might as well be A Link Between 4 Swords HD) after a title that was certainly divisive, even not as badly as WW, a sinking sales tendency for the series, I'm sure a well made and confident conference reveal would have been the fucking hype regardless (but again, only if the title actually looks accordingly).
In a prerecorded video though, there's just things you can't replicate. You'll also garner more attention sending an image into the world that has satisfying crowd reactions and amtosphere, even if it's not as mad as for TP, instead of just uploading a trailer on YouTube after an hour of skits or whatever the digital event will be. Even though it was already spoiled now, I bet Demon's Souls 2 and it's reveal are gonna get all the attention now instead. But if that happens, I'm sure we'll get more made up fairytales about how the evil, butthurt journalists all just wanna take down Nintendo lol.
