No end in sight with the awesome Indie releases, and this thread is a way of helping everyone to wade through the lesser known games or even share opinions on the heavy hitters. 51 more released games for this month and 32 games in the future section means may wont be any bit less busy than the previous months, even though our post count and voting participation is dwindling a bit. Nevertheless, go forth Indie Gamers and post impressions!

| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released, will release this month or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games (or games that will release during the current month):
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
Hey! I assume you are new in this thread series and want to see what we were up to? Or you didnt have enough time to play through all of the games from the last month but still want to catch up with the best ones? Then this list is for YOU! These were the games we enjoyed the most in the previous thread, voted on by the community (More thorough descriptions and impressions in the previous thread, especially the last few pages with the voting):
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

2. Javel-ein - Free (PC, Browser)
2iuUOV3.png

http://managore.wordpress.com/javel-ein/

Fantastic execution of the "You only get one" theme in which... you only get one weapon and need to carefully plan your usage of it. I tried to throw it away out of the level and guess what happened: Nothing! No game over, but I didnt get it back either. So take care of it. The challenges and the from those challenges created situations and circumstances really come together surprisingly well for a game. It doesnt feel like a short game made for a game jam at all, and the level design and art design also come together very nicely to complement the simplistic game concept. Great, little game.

2. Mizunoawa - Free (PC, Mac)
RGEjl8r.png

http://www.freem.ne.jp/dl/win/6557

Puzzle game with a pleasant aesthetic and quite relaxing gameplay. You have a queue of pieces that you can drop on fourlanes and you create combos by matching the same colour on the bottom of those lanes (you put the pieces in from the botton). Endless mode is manageable enough, the heart of it is the puzzle mode which, well, is your typical puzzle mode. You get a specific number of pieces and you have to clear the board with them. The fact that matched pieces only disappear one or two seconds after being matched allows for combos where you drop in more and create different chains that way. Really likeable game, so check it out!

2. Umbragram - Free (PC, Mac)
4rf78ev.png

http://games.evilrobotstuff.com/umbragram/

Umbragram is a puzzle game about perception. You're presented with two silhouettes, and you have to build a structure that casts those shadows. The area where your structure sits lacks perspective, so the more complex shapes can only be understood with its shadows.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Museum of Parallel Art - Free (PC, Mac, Linux Browser)
12NfVYu.png
http://technobeanie.com/stuff/games/Museum/
Visiting the virtual Museum of Parallel Art is a very special experience you'll share with someone. You'll express your thoughts and feelings towards art with cards, or try to view the world as your peer and guess the cards he or she has played. Comparing cards will prompt conversation and is sure to connect you two.
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
This is a monthly podcast series that presents notable Indie Game soundtracks. A likeable host and guests, a fantastic track selection, interesting discussions and a focus for Indies will make this one a mainstay in my monthly threads.
The information about these deeds is missing from the archives, and you can’t find it in any great statesmen’s memoir. The knowledge of the “Avant Armada” was completely erased.Fortunately, there are a few sources that tell the story of fearless men who followed royal orders and eradicated Evil in the uncharted lands.“Here Be Dragons” describes these days.
Glad to hear :) Feel free to stay around and share your opinion on some games with us.
New thread day!
Some good games coming out this month!
If anything releases THIS month, it will be included next month if someone posts a properly formatted post in the current may thread. Just to avoid any confusion about any "missing" releases :p
Yeah, I deleted Hazumino, but left in Monument Valley due to popular demand during the last thread. We had a bit of space in the OP this month, so I might as well include it.
Also, I was the one putting Mizunoawa into the last thread, so I take partial credit for you taking partial credit. :p
Whoa there! You forgot The Forest by Endnight Games! :D
Already was included in the upcoming section for february:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=761651
But thanks for suggesting games ;) We need more people to notice which games get announced. We often miss the games that get smaller Gaf threads for their announcements and then sink off the frontpage within 10 minutes.
Ah yea, the release date for the Alpha is set at May 22nd so it'd probably be worth to re add here?
Yep, if you do a properly formatted post like explained in the OP of this thread, it will be automatically included next month :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released, will release this month please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games (or games that will release during the current month):
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
DESCRIPTION TEXT
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We switched to these format posts because I have a program grabbing these posts, so I dont need to go through 15 pages of Indie thread looking for stuff and missing half of it.
Ah, that new thread smell...
Transistor and The Forest only a few weeks away and we're one month closer to Gods Will Be Watching!
Yeah, I deleted Hazumino, but left in Monument Valley due to popular demand during the last thread. We had a bit of space in the OP this month, so I might as well include it.
Also, I was the one putting Mizunoawa into the last thread, so I take partial credit for you taking partial credit. :p
I'd like to suggest another IOS-only game (well a PC version will be coming in the future): Wayward Souls. When an IOS game is getting attention from RockPaperShotgun and Giant Bomb, and has a 3-page GAF thread that's almost all praise, I think it deserves to be featured in the OP
I'll make a post later
True, but it had never been posted in a thread before and I had never heard about it till last month, so I figured I probably wasn't the only one
Thank you to Toma's sister!
Although, I don't think you can say anything about someone's sister that can't be taken in a very bad light :p
Now that exams are finishing this wednesday, I might find time to give some impressions.
Speaking of Mini-Metro, everyone should play Metro: Rules of Conduct. One of my favourite browser games of all time.
Crossing The Line - I am glad more narrative first person games are being made with Cryengine.
Croixleur Sigma - An anime hack-and-slash game that doesn't look give me the creeps, impressive. Nice to see the fruits of the Steam Japanese developers relationships, wasn't that due to James Mielke (former 1UP)? Oh yeah.
July Ends - reminds me of But That Was Yesterday.
Shard - what the hell lol!
OX - that looks awesome. With Hover and this, the French sure love their neon ;)
CrossCode is quite cool and responsive, but I'm stuck on the mirror robot.
Echo of the Wilds showed me once again that all I need is pretty graphics and exquisite presentation with a heavy emphasis on storytelling to get over my survival game type hump. Played for like 20 minutes of the demo, really liking it.
The Last Night from that #cyberpunkjam is so damn great for a tiny demo in 6 days, god wow the cinematic animations when you shoot up the nightclub. I think it's just Spacebar to bring up your gun and T to shoot. That is 2D Blade Runner perfection! And the Metal Gear spotted noise made me laugh. Their proper game looks really cool too, liking this revival of cinematic platformers.
Perish - ????
PERISH is a procedural Action RPG / Roguelike-like.
Combat is similar-ish to Dark Souls; deadly & deliberate. Level/world structure is like Spelunky; distinct contained levels that are random but broadly follow a memorizable & distinct structure.
Uncoloured is set in a minimalist world, where you are challenged throughout six levels to return the colour that has been lost. When you start the game everything is greyscale, with one colour returned at the end of each level. Once a colour is restored, that colour is then visible throughout the rest of the game.
Simetry - ????
Simetry is a 2.5D puzzle jump 'n' run where you can disassamble and collect parts of the level. The collected parts can be used to build new forms to overcome obstacles and solve puzzles. You can only disassamble white parts, black parts are solid and red parts are deadly. The game will have a minimalistic but geometrical look.
Galactic Rage - ????
egVPNo8.png
http://galacticrage.com/
It is an upcoming top scrolling shooter which plays like a lot of older arcade shooters, but has a few twists. Ships can be kitted out with new weapon combinations and abilities. Players can also hijack other vehicles throughout the levels to change things up a bit (a mechanic we loved from Metal Slug)
Yeah, other than Watch Dogs, Dying Light, CoD: Advanced Warfare, and the Star Wars game Henig is working on, I'm really only anticipating indies. Distance, Gods Will Be Watching, SCALE, Dex, etc, etc, etc. have me more excited than any other AAA games.
No need to worry about that too much, as long as the thread regulars keep the descriptions decently short, the checking and shortening is kept to a minimum for myself as well. I am just glad someone else came in to suggest a game :)
I fixed the link. The game is actually currently in a beta and releases this Friday, May 9th. So if you are thinking of picking it up you should get it now because at release it will go up $10.
The game is a lot like Hearts of Iron. If you have ever played those then you will love this game. You can basically re-enact WW2 or change how the war happens. For example you can play as Germany but not invade Russia and focus on Britain instead. It is a grand strategy game. So you manage everything. Finance, Diplomacy, Resources, Research, Troops, Deployment etc. It does have a bit of a learning curve but they just added a tutorial which helps tons.
Overall the game has improved tons since it first entered early access. If you like grand strategy games I highly recommend it.
This game is more detailed on combat, units and industry. Also the map is in hexes, there are roads, railroads, and very importantly, brigdes. Which makes more advanced tactics possible, such as dropping paratroopers to hold key bridges while your armor and infantry race to their relief.
Units are smaller so you can tailor your frontline stacks as brigades, with some armor, flak, infantry, AT guns, etc. While rear stacks are artillery, and supply trucks. You can also use trucks to transport infantry quickly around the map, preferably along roads.
At sea you can use transport ships, or landing ships, or use inherent merchant marine to ship units between friently ports (as in Civilization V).
Hearts of Iron is a somewhat feature stripped game, you must pay your way into playing hearts of iron's full potential even when you already bought it.
However, in supreme ruler, they dont sell updates, they will give you an array of updates even after it's release and listen and respond to it's community very actively.
Also, land isn't limited to stupid 'provinces' but instead in hexes that represent 16KM of land, you have ministers that control every aspect of your government, they can wage wars for you, you also are able to limit their power and prioritize what they should do, or you can strip them of their power and take control for yourself.
TIE - super early right now, all you can do is put on a suit, turn on the shower, and go outside by a bus stop where a dude and a lady give a comment. Music is fantastic, though. I managed to somehow go outside in my undies.
i06aIgM0SYjWR.gif
Prisoned - Was kind of a meh linear narrative walking game, inspired by a poem set to some melancholic music. You move from one screen to the next, some text pops up about loneliness and grieving, and then you click on a item to transition to the next screen. There's no exploration like the game page claims. The red trees looked cool. My problem is, you know from very far away that you're going to walk up to an item and read some text, so the really slow walking feels more an endurance test while it's mostly white empty screens. I didn't really connect with the themes because of how basic it all was. I wouldn't be surprised if this game was made in a week or so. However, someone might be able to project their own personal losses into those white spaces, so it could be effective for others.
Just had a quick blast on The Last Night
t85T9g.gif
The Last Night is a game that evokes Blade Runner heavily – this is an homage rather than a cheap imitation though. This is neon, dirty neon, with thick French electro layered atop the beautiful pixel art. This depiction of a fictional city might only take place across a few screens but this city is alive; hookers stand under street lamps, calmly smoking into the night, cars streak past at speed, their lights briefly lighting up the screen.
Posted about it with a couple of screenshots that TOTALLY don't scale to the slider - but that's life.
Asteroid Outpost is a 2D tower strategy game. I call it a "Tower Strategy" game because unlike most tower defense games, you don't get resources from killing enemies. You have to mine all resources yourself, much like in a real-time strategy game. In this game, there is a balance between expanding to collect resources, and spending resources to defend those expansions. There are 2 resources in the game: Minerals and Power. You mine minerals from asteroids, and you collect power from a sun using solar panels. Everything in the game requires power, so you must keep your structures connected to a power source. Missions will vary, everything from collect some minerals, to stopping an enemy shipping lane.
Regarding Umbagram, answer from the dev:
I'm really glad you enjoyed the game. To answer your final question, I do have some plans to expand the game a bit, but it won't be commercial. I'd be putting an extended version on mobile (as best as I can with the limited devices I have to test). It'll still be free. I've always considered Umbragram to be freeware, and as much as possible I want to keep all the games I make that way.
I want to address all of your other points individually.
Regarding ease and fail states, I intentionally made the game completely non-punitive. This has the side effect of being rather off-putting to more experienced game players, but is a welcome feature to those who either have a weaker sense of spatial reasoning, or less experience with games. The compromise that I'd considered between the two was a "Golf Mode", where success on a given puzzle is based on the number of blocks used to reach a solution. This maintains the absence of punishment (which I consider important), but also gives stronger players something more to strive for. The truth is that when I released Umbragram, I was sick of working on the game, and decided to just ship it as is. In an extended version, Golf Mode would probably return. Would that kind of feature be satisfying for you? I think a "fail after X incorrect blocks" is kind of arbitrary, and as much as Umbragram can devolve into trial and error, I think resets are far more destructive to a casual player's experience.
On level selection, I actually already added this feature. I knew I needed it for GDC when I'd be showing people the game, and by that time I'd already read a lot of impressions of other people which indicated that it was needed. I wish I'd done more extended play testing. I did single session play testing, which helped a lot. But people don't encounter the need for save files in that kind of environment. They need to take the game home. A good lesson to learn.
On stage size, there are some unfortunate limitations in stage size due to the isometric projection. I found that 6 x 6, it got really easy to place blocks in such a way that your view of a tile that needed a block could be obscured. It's also possible in 5x5, but I tried hard to design the puzzles in such a way that it was very very difficult to put yourself in that kind of position. Realistically, I wont be expanding the play area for an expanded release. Sorry ):
The visual paradoxes were really important to me. They don't personally affect me anymore since I'm so used to the levels, but when I watch people play, seeing them get disoriented really makes me happy. I'm glad it has the effect that I'd wanted.
Besides level selection and touch based controls, I have been playing with the idea of a block palette. It ruins a bit of the purity of the game, but these blocks would have various effect on either neighboring blocks or on the shadow. I'll have to play with some to see which actually open up the interaction space, and which are just sort of gimmicky.
Anyway, that's a really long answer. Hope that actually answered your question. I post in the Indie Development thread occasionally if you want to see what I'm up to. Username is Alts. And by the way, the beginning of your post " Well, damn. Umbagram is really good." was a great birthday present. Thanks.
The clouds.
I think so, yes. It looks just so end-of-summer-ish, those lazy holiday evenings when you're 10 and it's not quite late enough to go to bed and not quite early enough to actually do something. Might need to keep my eyes peeled for that one.
