Here it is :

An FCC filing reveals Nintendo has changed the CPU of the Nintendo 2DS to improve the security of the device. The change is most likely to prevent installation of illegal / homebrew software.

The filing talks about the Nintendo FTR-001 which is the Nintendo 2DS as this page on the Nintendo website reveals. In the filing Nintendo reports, “The difference between FTR-001 and FTR-001(-01) is from CPU with a different security function of the initial program loader that is installed in each model .

Apparently, it's to prevent hacks (initial program loader is modified).

So if I'm reading this right it's now a single screen device with two sticks and DL only? Never thought I'd see that.

I thought 3DS/2DS flashcarts were already unable to boot if firmware version was ~4.5 or higher… can someone correct me? What is this new protection for?

Probably just Nintendo not wanting to take any chances and not leaving any room for hackers, I guess.

There's also an unreleased exploit for 6.2-ish firmwares, which means any brand new 2DS/3DS that hasn't been manually updated could run it.

I guess they're preemptively closing another possible exploit.

From what I understand, hackers found an exploit in either the BIOS or bootloader, something along those lines anyway. What's certain is that the exploit that cannot be fixed through firmware patches.

But since it's for the 2DS, that means the 3DS and 3DS XL are unaffected? If they are, why no new model for them too?

Could be that Nintendo found an exploit and decided to take action before any more security-flawed systems were sold.

Seems I misread the reports. It was an exploit found through the stock firmware of newer 3DS/2DS models, which means they're exploitable if not updated. Nintendo probably updated CPU prevent any future occurrences.

By the way, need some clarification : the "initial program loader", it's the program loading the OS, right?

initial program loader might be the microkernel, not exacly the bios chip.

But seeing as this doesn't have a bios chip, that's the perfect explanation for it.
