Is XSEED Games Going to Release Brandish: The Dark Revenant (Falcom)?

Esterior:
In 2009, Falcom released Brandish: the Dark Revenant to PSP systems in Japan. This remake of the game is considered a fantastic version of the series staples and has brought a number of new individuals into the games. [...]

Fan excitement for the game began to be drummed up again recently with the emergence of a possible fan translation. Gu4n, the translator on the project has posted two images on Ancient Land of Ys to show that the script dump and text insertion was possible:

Regarding the work, Gu4n had stated that he was at about the 20% mark on the translation. The praise that followed regarding the opportunity to see the game in English was stopped by a surprise comment from Tom Lipschultz of XSEED, posting the following on Ancient Land of Ys:

This is an unexpected development, though there is no other information other than the blatant teasing from Wyrdwad on the forums. It certainly seems to imply that XSEED will finally get to release this title, though most likely as a digital only release for PSN. This game should be playable on both PSP and PSVita units through a digital download anyhow. After all of this time with people hoping, it looks like XSEED will finally be able to release this title they had hinted at some time ago.

This is just my speculation since a PC version of this game doesn't exist (as of yet) but maybe this will also be coming to Steam? I can't imagine the digital market for PSP games is so hot right now. Then again, they're apparently localizing some PSP visual novels ...

If it's XSEED, I'll buy it.

Not familiar with the franchise though, what other games would you say that are kinda like this?

They will go back and do this but not try to reignite Grand Knights History?

Consider me sour lol

Seriously though. What is this?

Parakeetman

No one wants a throne you've been sitting on!

Grand Knights History wasnt that great of a game. Sure it looked pretty, but basically a lot of the point of the game was building up characters for the MP aspect.

I'm sure the situations are exactly identical and they actively chose this game over Grand Knights History.

Awesome, I imported the Japanese version of Brandish on the PSP but didn't have much luck muddling my way through the language barrier. I'd buy a localised copy in a heartbeat.

There are still plenty of PSP gems I would love to see thrown on PSN

Keep em Coming XSEED

I personally wouldn't mind Seeing Venus and Braves

I have the PSP import of this and it's an EXCELLENT game. It's a remake of the first one. The remastered music is fantastic, and the controls worked really well on the PSP.

I would double dip for an English version on ANY platform, because the Japanese did pose some problems for me in getting to complete it.

People would cry with how hard that game is lol. Fantastic original title though. Have both the PS2 and PSP versions.

I played the Super Famicom version, but I was really interested in playing this version when I finished. Would be great to finally play it.

Dungeon Crawler and Japan exclusive? We need Parakeetman for some imp- oh He's here :p

Anything from Falcom instanty blimps in my radar, so this rather intrigue me.

Well, it's a remake of a game that came out in English on SNES.

Completely different companies.

Specifically, the reason why we don't have GKH is because Vanillaware bailed on the US version. From what I've heard, XSeed Games was basically done with all their work for the game but Vanillaware refused to actually stick the translation in the game and cancelled their previous licensing agreement.

I know that!!

I just like to kick up dirt over it

Is it comparable to Xanadu (Next)?

They're pretty different. Brandish is closer to Dungeon Explorer, or... like first-person dungeon crawlers, but with a different camera angle. But still pretty different. Even the Mystery Dungeon comparison Parakeetman gave is not exactly on the mark (it's not randomized at all, for instance).

Watching videos of the game is definitely the way to go. Here's the original trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32TC07hsWgY

I see thanks.

I had tons of fun with Xanadu Next and will check out Brandish if XSEED brings it over.

Oh man , I'm so buying this day one if true .

played a little bit of this game (JP version) but since I can't read Japanese except Kana, I stoped but game was a good dungeon crawler and one of the series from Falcom that I always been interested in .

Ugh, it would have to be announced a week after I buy the Japanese version on the announcement of the fan translation.

Now I have a useless copy of the game (given that the fan translation is now on hold), and I'll have to double dip to play the game in english. Probably won't even bother if it's ddl only.

Well, let's be real: it hasn't been announced.

I don't think xseed are douchey enough to hint to ghan to stop his fan translation if they're not planning on releasing it.
Wonder if there's any other PSP games they're still looking to? Though I imagine it's only stuff like this that'd work out now: from a developer they're on great terms with, and likely not a very demanding localization. Might even be the type of game that's a perfect fit for DD anyway.

Brandiiiiiish!!!! ;A;

Bought the Japanese version last year and will double dip again if this happens! I'm probably one of the biggest Brandish fans in the western hemisphere, and this excellent, excellent game was my introduction to the series, which is now one of my favorites ever. So excited to play this again in English!

Everyone, please trust me on this one and don't let the (generally negative) reception of the SNES port of Brandish 1 blind you. Brandish: The Dark Revenant is one of the best dungeon crawlers I've played in recent years (if not THE best) and a masterpiece of game design -- every map and mechanic is fine-tuned to perfection, and even the interface is totally natural. And now it's "natively" 3D to boot, so nobody shouldn't have a problem with this game anymore! I love this game so much, and it being in English would give more people a chance to discover the beauty of the Brandish series.

You better not be playing with my feelings Wyrdwad!

There's no PC version of this game save for the original PC-98 release (like if someone other than me and Aeana cares, lol), and honestly I wouldn't hold my breath for it. Someone (not XSEED) should port it to PC first, and other than the Chinese company who already ported Ys Seven and Zero/Ao no Kiseki, I can't think of any other company willing to do the job.

Just buy the PSP version if it ever gets localized (please)!

It's a pure dungeon crawler. Hard to relate it directly to anything else since the Brandish series was always kinda unique.

Here's a page about the series: http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/brandish/brandish.htm

Too bad that article is pretty pessimistic :(. One of the things I don't like about HG101 is how lots of polarized opinions are presented as facts in their articles.

Id say Xanadu is faster paced than Brandish.

xanadu
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDwCVhx957A

brandish
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiPiYM0jvRw

also brandish is moving by "squares" so to speak like the fushigi no dungeon / shiren series

While The Dark Revenant is indeed not as fast as Xanadu Next, any other Brandish game on the PC-98 or Windows (heck, even Koei's Super Famicom/Nintendo ports) can be way fast paced than Xanadu Next.

I like the new PSP remixes, but I'm really glad they let you select the original music too, because I have a major soft spot for the original compositions.

Fortress (original)
Fortress (remake)

I see my upload there! ;) I really like the original soundtrack of the first one too. Here's a few of my favorites:

Shop
Ancient Statue
Stage Clear (the remixes from Brandish 2 and 3 are also really nice)
Tower
Cave
Ending I

Glad they let us choose to play with the original score as well.

Well, "still looking to" would imply not having formally announced localization, so that'd rule Trails in the Sky SC out, but the other two... huh. Hope we hear something eventually.
