Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire Remakes Announced for 3DS

Pokemon is a highly iterative franchise. Seems like each addition tends to add something. The appeal of new games is new mechanics and new Pokemon. Remakes tend to be about getting to re-experience something you haven't gotten to experience in a long time. Seems to me that most Pokemon games are offering you a very similar experience, so a remake feels redundant. I know it's going to be an unpopular opinion on a thread about Pokemon, but as someone who likes pokemon, but can't bring myself to play every game in the series, I'm trying to understand the appeal of a remake.

People like replaying games they enjoyed.

People like replaying games they enjoyed with additional content and features that have been added to the series in the 11 years since the originals even more.

If you're not the kind of person that replays games, then maybe remakes aren't for you - but for those of us that do, remakes are great.

Ruby

+ Mawile (now a Fairy type + Mega Mawile)
+ Zangoose (David Bowie the Pokemon)
+ Groudon is rad

- ...but Shiftry definitely isn't
- Sun effects just weren't as cool as the rain

Sapphire

+ Ludicolo is THE BEST
+ Kyogre is rad AND it wrecks Groudon AND it had OP Drizzle
+ Rain effects were the coolest shit at the time

- ...but Drizzle got nerfed :(
- Sableye is cool but wasn't ever great, and now it's got Fairy weakness to boot

...well seems like a tie. OH WAIT

Lol, well it's the mangaverse only. I'm pretty sure there aren't any scars underneath the gameverse protag's hat.

Pokémon Adventures/Special is a fun read, granted I've only read the R/S/E chapters.

There are a lot of cool things confined to the manga I am sad about. And yeah pokemans manga are generally pretty decent.

Because without his hat, he wouldn't be fabulous.

There's also plot reasons too.

Far more fabulous with it removed.

Pokemon Z will probably happen. Zygarde has unused attacks in the game's code.

Hopefully they fix all of X and Ys' issues.

They also have yet to address
Eternal Flower Floette
, so they've got enough plot options for a Z version or X2/Y2.

More like Gen 1 fans give people shit. Also, Gen 1 and Gen 2 fans are the worst in the fandom, by a mile.

This is to be expected though. Gen 3 basically was a betryal for the original fans. New very different Pokemon designs (When I saw the original designs for Kyogre and Groudon I thought they were fake), bad selection of old Pokemon with most of the decent ones trapped in the Safari Zone. Having no access to old Pokes unless you buy a GameCube and a bunch of add-on shit. A shame a generation of kids was started on this version, the experience of an introduction to the series and then a direct sequal does so much more.
But the LTTP people are much worse from what I've seen. Look who gets bugged out of their fucking minds in overall gen popularity polls show that the first two gens still dominate.
This is why my son is starting from the origin of every game series in the home.

Well, you're the one being all negative here.

I wouldn't worry much, DP was also "shitty", but they not only fixed it on the third version, but also improved GSC in a lot of ways with HGSS. I am not a dude, btw.

Ok I trust you. but if the game is not good, I will blame you.
You hear me, you will be at fault :(

And sorry, the "dude" was more meant as an outcry. But noted

Lol @ betrayal. Sure, dude.
I have no idea why I took you out of my ignore list, but back to it you go.

Sure thing, you can blame me if the games are shit.

Also, sorry if I was somehow rude to you. It is just tiring to read negativity every time there is an announcement about new games in the series.

If that's the case, I can understand. I don't mind the iterative nature of Pokemon, but if you want completely new experiences, it's definitely a good idea to skip the remakes out.

I did not feel betrayed.

RSE are "compatible" in the sense that you can slowly transfer over Pokemon if you own a DS, a 3DS, a gen 3 game, a gen 4 game, a gen 5 game, and a gen 6 game.

It's kinda like arguing Gen 2 shouldn't get a remake because all those Pokemon were technically obtainable with Emerald, Colosseum, XD, Firered and Leafgreen, etc. People wanted a remake so they could play Gen 2 with improved mechanics, not so they could get the Pokemon.

What is the point of playing Silver/Gold other than for the specific Pokemon in the game? The supposedly new Pokemon games are two steps away from being remakes of the old ones in the first place. People didn't buy Heart Gold so they could relive the byzantine plot.

And lots of kids who may be getting into Pokemon don't have GBAs/the first DS and, thus, have never played Gen 3 or have any way to do so, so this will be the first time for many to experience Hoenn.

Sure. I mean, Nintendo could just put the game out on Virtual Console, but yes, I can see why a kid might want a new Pokemon game every year, and might want to play this remade.

A followup question, though: How many eight-year-olds have posted in this thread thus far?

Thanks for the responses!

the appeal of it to Nintendo or for the fans?

Nintendo sees money in this cause fans of r/s are going to buy it. There are kids today who were not born when this came out, they could sell it as a new game to them. It's easier to make a remake than a brand new game cause expectations for a new game ( a new generation) are higher.

For most fans, it is a great game that most of us are looking forward to re-experience in 3D. More new stuff the better, but most of us are just super excited about playing it again.

I dont know why anyone is doubting the quality of this remake. Gamefreak's B team is actually their best team especially when it comes to content, presentation and production values. Just look at Platinum, HG/SS, and B&W2.

There should be no worries. In fact, i wish i could ride out the hype waves upon each new gen until the B team releases a pokemon game for that gen. The A team lays the foundation and then the B team builds the Taj Mahal on it.

And lets be realistic. If you hated the water in Gen III it isnt gonna be gone. Look at how closely HG/SS mirrorred the originals. At best you can expect a revamped hoenn dex or at least one that includes all 386 pokemon (i think only 202 was available in the game). Basically, if you liked HG/SS and what it did, youll love these games.

My only qualm with rse is how they cut of all the old pokes from the previous two gens. Hopefully this is mended.

I wonder if any other Pokemon will get two Mega evolutions, like Mega Charizard X and Y, or Mega Mewtwo X and Y.

Mega Sceptile Alpha and Mega Sceptile Omega pls

Wooo! I put a decent amount of time into Emerald, but I don't remember these games much at all. And with the addition of 3D, I imagine these will be the most dramatic remakes yet. I'm really curious to see how well they perform on the 3DS, since that was one of X/Y's shortcomings.

They'll probably give Blaziken another one. Gamefreak sure loves their fire starters, then again Greninja is their gen 6 baby so who knows what could happen.

I just told you that all those gen 2 Pokemon were available at the time, it was just a hassle to get them... Much like gen 3.

People play Pokemon games for different reasons. Some play them for multiplayer, some play them for challenges like Nuzlockes or the Battle Frontier, some play them just to enjoy the single player.

How many eight-year olds post on NeoGAF? Seems like a strange question to ask.

Question about Megas though: If groudon and kyorge really had megas wouldnt we have seen it in the game data for x and y? I mean thats how it has always worked. Furthermore, if they did have megas they wouldnt be the only hoeonn pokes to get em. Thats way too much data to hide without being found. I seriously doubt that they are megas.

They can patch it in.

Even if they aren't megas, they are definitely different forms that aren't present in X/Y.
