They released Little Battlers Xperience W for the Vita, so I don't think they have any bad blood with Sony or the system. They probably just don't have any interest.

Third parties are ultimately seeking their own benefit, and will pursue audiences and relationships based on that. A lot of Level-5's IPs are all-ages sort of things. The Vita has more of a niche appeal, so the 3DS is probably a better fit for these. These are the same sort of titles that I could easily see moving to mobile, however. Not sure how Level-5's done on that front.
Makes sense, but if Sony money-hatted them enough wouldn't they be interested. Sony clearly must see how their games sell gangbusters and LTBXW was a long while ago.

You are correct, launch aligned, those streams already crossed a week or two ago. This week puts PS4 farther behind.

Does anybody have PS4 vs. PS3 vs. Wii U numbers, launch aligned?

we should have an 8K club chart until someone wakes PS4 up
Nintendo made many mistakes with Wii U but PS4 does not deserve this I really don't get why Sony had no Japanese software lined up for it, are they trying to repeat Vita's start?

...speaking of which, is that Layton 7... thing... happening yet?

Sony also made many mistakes launching late and not having a good launch line up. So why exactly does the ps4 not deserve this?

Wii U will probably drop next week (I think this week's baseline is more because of continued Golden Week than MK8 pre-hype) so maybe we won't see the streams crossed until MK8's week.

We'll see next week.

With GTA V being a western game and a big seller, does that mean Infamous may do better than expected?

(Also, on a semi-related note, has MGS always been as big in JP as it is in the West?)

PS3 launched during holiday season though so it's little unfair to make straight comparison. PS3 too was doing pretty horrible numbers already in April 2007. Still I guess my main point is that the PS3 also had very slow start and yet it went to sell about 10 million. Sure PS4 could do million or two less but no GC numbers.

My counter argument to this is PS3 started selling well right as smart phones were finding their footing. PS4 has way more competition for "entertainment time" in Japan, and by these sales number, near irrelevancy. We'll see in the long run, but I think the Wii U current numbers are what we are going to see for PS4 long term.

I would be kind of surprised if whatever Project Beast is makes it out before October 7th.

That's probably about the only thing SCEJ is likely to dig up.

Could a Definitive Edition of something a) happen and b) sell? I'm thinking Dark Souls 2 primarily, but there might be other games that'd fit the bill (I don't really see TLOU having the required impact, though)

lol at this rate when will the PS4 catch up with the WiiU
Maybe my math is wrong, but the PS4 sold 867 more units than the WiiU this week. If that was a static number, it would take about 25 years for the PS4 to catch up to the WiiU. In real terms, its impossible to say for sure since the weekly sales numbers changes every week. It took the PS3 about 3 years to catch up to the Gamecube.

I don't know if we ever could have predicted a result this dire before launch.

What was the expectation for PS4 in Japan going in?

I think it ranged from tepid to market-saving. But I don't think anybody was foolhardy enough to even consider final PS4 < Wii U LTD prelaunch. That it's even a possibility now is a little jarring, after how the Wii U has struggled.

Probably not for the rest of this year considering mario kart is about to come out. That should give the WiiU a healthy lead over the PS4 for at least a few months.

"At least a few months"? Are you talking LTD? Even YTD Wii U may well end up beating PS4 for 2014..

someone needs to hold the home console base in Japan and PS4 had the best chance to do this, but you are right I guess Sony deserves this situation but this is like Vita all over again

Vita should have kicked 3DS's ass all over the place but it just struggled for years before it made a comeback. At this rate core gaming in Japan is lost to mobile forever

so...by the time PS4 catches up to Wii U (if it ever does) Nintendo could have their next home console on the market. ouch.

It costs more to moneyhat a decision if that decision has little chance of being made anyway. As such, Sony probably doesn't consider it to be as worthwhile as pursuing other relationships. Since Level-5 is already planning to put games on Nintendo's handhelds, it's easy for them to make arrangements that are mutually beneficial.

Doesn't even have a Wikipedia page, so I guess not.

while you guys talk of Sony paying Level 5 to port Yo-Kai Watch to Vita, I think Nintendo should try to sneak an HD version deal in there for Wii U while this new pokemon-ghost fad is hot

Well majority of Western games released in the West now get releases in Japan so that shows you how much progress there's been. Funny thing is that its the 360 that started the trend where they were all selling low but steady numbers.

Who knows maybe the game drought might help these games get more attention.

I really don't see how in the long run PS4 will continue to sell WiiU like numbers. Unlike WiiU it will have actual third party support. Big Japanese franchises like RE, MGS, FF, KH and Tales of will come eventually and then there is the ever growing western production (COD pulls over 200k these days and well with GTAV GTA has become a big franchise even in Japan). WiiU has only Nintendo and considering how dead it is everywhere I can't see Nintendo supporting it as long as publishers support PS4.

Key term in your post is eventually, and every quarter, more and more people in Japan will be finding new entertainment value on mobile. Outside of some true fans, I don't see any of those titles bringing people in, just like major titles on Wii U not moving the needle; no matter if it is 1st or 3rd party.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
I have the feeling that the Wii U is going to sell more than the PS4 (New console) this year (2014) in Japan.

Well with MK8 and Smash WiiU will get two of the biggest console titles this gen - and whatever else Nintendo might still unveil. From the lineup it doesnt look like the PS4 will be able to deliver these kinds of game till 2015. FF15 next year would be essential.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Those fanchises will come eventually to PS4 no matter how badly it sells in Japan because they make majority of their sales in west (well except Tales of).

Those franchises will surely come to PS4 because of Western sales possibility.
But...what if they come to other consoles as well, like...I don't know...next Nintendo handheld and Vita?

6 months ago this would be laughed at but now it is no longer a joke but very real

I'm going to buy a PS4 as soon as they tell me GTAV is really coming to it but it needs to do much better getting Japanese software $400 is not cheap for me

Mind boggling how Sony didn't get any Japanese software lined up after launch. That release list posted earlier means nothing on the horizon till November onwards. We might be looking at a Vita year 1 situation again.
