Most technically impressive game of the 7th generation?

GTA is open world and still does like 90% of the tricks out there. The sheer amount of effects they pull and with its physics being top dog, earns them winner.

Art wise, even though I've not played it, Beyond does look very good, but technically as it's a static camera based game, it can be highly tuned to a given visual set piece.
During gameplay the camera is not static at all. Quite the opposite you have access to a free 360 degree camera that can float around and into the air. For cinematic purposes they rely on semi-static angles from time to time, but you can still pan the camera to some degree and, as mentioned, switch to a free first person mode.

Have any shots from the Sci-Fi facility at the end of Beyond?

On a purely technical level, Two Souls is the objectively correct answer. TLoU probably comes in second, imo, although I haven't played the uncharted games. God of War series shouldn't really be in the running for #1. Maybe top 5. Maybe.

I think it's funny we're talking about Xenoblade since it's such a technically low-grade game, but for the hardware they're working with it's actually really impressive. Great game, too.

A lot of great technical marvels last generation. But I do find Beyond two souls to stand at the top of it.
If only it didn't have black bars :(

I really want Beyond so bad now, thanks guys, lol.

Rent it. You're trough it in no time, and the game itself isn't as good. Big Quantic Dream fan since Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy), but Beyond was very disapointing. The game went from great, emotional drama scènes, to the freakin worst B-film type sci fi stuff. And the farther you get, the more the latter takes over. (I don't mind Scifi or fantasy mind you. But this was jumping the shark tenfold in almost every scene) Such a shame, because when the story hits the right notes, it does so right in the feels. Massively.

Must've been one of my biggest disapointments of last gen.

Anyway, it was a looker and deserves a place on this technically impressive list (though the close ups on character models are reserved for the QTE's ofcourse). For me it must be Uncharted 2/3 and Last of Us though, as those were stunning while stil feeling as a game. I remember being flabbergasted by the sinking ship in U3, the train and helicopter attack in 2, and almost everything in TLOU. From the opening in that insainly detailed teenager bedroom, to everything else.

Technically, I think GTAV.

Despite the mocking, I remember the Mall scene or the Club scene from Heavy Rain making me ask how?
GOW is technically ambitious and sets it's own records too.

I thought my pick of Xenoblade Chronicles was going to be unpopular. Glad I was wrong! My idea of technically impressive is doing a lot with a little. Xenoblade pulled this off:

on the Wii. Huge areas filled with enemies and NPCs. Long draw distances. Morning/day/evening/night cycles. All that with minimal loading... I have no idea how Monolith Soft pulled that off, but it was amazing to behold.

GG are wizards. This game almost looks 'too good'.

I forgot how insanely good this game looks. Compared to some of the other screens posted in this thread, the level of detail is amazing. Can't wait to see what GG cook up with a non launch title.

glad you did it, so I wont have to.

The visuals on Beyond Two Souls alone made me actually finish the game even though I didn't like it. Just about every scene was jaw dropping

There were a lot of games that made me say wow out loud, but I think given the technical constraints of the Wii versus the PS3 and 360, it's got to be Xenoblade Chronicles.

Just can't see past Uncharted 2 & 3, even my hardcore PC gamer friends were impressed by them.

Rage is really awful.

Beyond: Two Souls.

Grand Theft Auto V.
God of War Ascencion.
God of War III.
Beyond: Two Souls.
Uncharted 3
The Last of Us.
Killzone 2
Killzone 3
Metal Gear Solid 4.
Halo 4.

Beyond: Two Souls

Wipeout HD. Still can't believe how amazing that game looks.

Uncharted 3, God of War Ascension and Beyond Two Souls

God of War 3 for me.

Oh and the Mario Galaxies for running on a Wii.

I know it's cliché to say, but TLOU.

It looks stunning, I never saw these "severe framedrops" like some people mention.

Halo 4
Uncharted 2&3
Beyond: Two Souls
God of War 3

Wipeout HD
Motorstorm Apocalypse
God of War 3 and Ascension
Uncharted 2 and 3
Killzone 2 and 3
Rage
Crysis 2 and 3
GofW 3
TLOU
Beyond
GTAV

Naughty Gods takes it, whatever their game may be.

God of War Ascension

For me it's Killzone. When it came out it looked insane and still holds up today, even if later PS3 games looked better.

God of War III
Uncharted 2
GTA V
TLoU
Gears of War 3

Many many many many PS3 games..
I would have to agree. My jaw was dropped with Wipeout HD, then dropped again with UC2, then again with Beyond.

Crysis 3 on PC. I've never seen a game where I thought an in-game screenshot could be concept art.
For consoles, I'd say GTAV, Last of Us and Beyond. Games look fantastic considering the age of their respective systems. Last of Us in particular, even as a 'PC gamer', had me in awe several times.

It's disappointing, although expected, that most of the people commenting in this thread seem to think that "technically impressive" means just "impressive graphics", or otherwise the answer to this question would be unanimous: GTA V. The rest don't come even close.

I don't find a consistently shitty framerate while driving technically impressive.

Games like TLOU, Beyond, and GTAV pushed the PS3 to its absolute limits, I can't wait to experience TLOU and GTA in 1080/60

What about MAG? How impressive was it really to support over 200 players?

Considering the comment about it being largely PS3 games, I wanted to comment about Halo 4.

There was lots of debate about which system was the more technically competent, and initially, the results seemed interesting, there was some back and forth, Gears looked much better than any PS3 game until Uncharted, there was still something on par-ish about the two, then KZ2 came out and 360 never caught up, and people would debate why that was frequently, but ultimately my opinion was always 'the proof is in the pudding', and in that sense, PS3 was considerably ahead from KZ2 on. Halo 4 really stunned me because of this. I was confident there was a pronounced technical gulf between the two, and that's why we'd seen the results we did, but Halo 4 was such a huge leap beyond anything on 360 it was difficult to believe. It still doesn't match the very best of PS3, but it impressed me more than anything the 360 did since the first Gears, and certainly I think it's up there with many of those pretty PS3 games we swoon over.

Are we talking about console games?

Forza Horizon, Crysis 3 on 360, GT5, and Probably God of War III in terms of tech features.

I can only recommend it, but as you can see it's one of the most divisive games released in 2013. There is nothing wrong with the quality or length, which makes this a rather unique case. It depends on if you can tolerate playing a cinematic adventure game that tells a slice of life story (out of order) and is mostly centred around one character instead of a big main plot. It's clearly supernatural from the beginning and that brings some B movie type stuff with it as well that you either like or hate. There are also quite a few action scenes. If the character story appeals to you you will really like this game, otherwise you probably get bored. Unfortunately there isn't much in-between here.

Scenes are highly varied though in setting, so it always stays fresh. Pretty much everyone also agrees that the visuals, music and voice acting are excellent. If you liked stuff like Heavy Rain/The Walking Dead enough, have no problems with that type of gameplay and can tolerate supernatural elements in a realistic setting I would say go for it. In any case, it's definitely a must play IMO once it goes below $20.

Was one of the first games to really push big crowds that actually move around and have proper collisions. Those scenes were highly impressive at the time, the club stills looks good today.

Yeah I'm giving this a try one day, thanks for the info though.

As an overall technical achievement, Halo 3 has to be up there

Best lighting in any Halo game
Forge
Theatre
Campaign scoring
Ridiculous scale for a shooter - that twin Scarab battle blew my mind.

Sure Halo 4 looks better on the surface, but Halo 3 is overall better technically IMO.

That's a tricky issue. Even as someone who really likes Halo 3's technical design (and art design and basically everything aside from a few aspects of feedback), I have to admit that it doesn't look like a very efficient use of the hardware by comparison with Halo 4.

Bungie has historically often sat very far on the "engine provides for the needs of the game" side of the spectrum. For instance, despite running on console with horrible GPU I/O performance, Halo 1 plays extremely fast and loose with large alpha-blended effects.

It depends on what you value, I guess. I find many of Halo 3's choices extremely interesting, and great for the final product, but it's entirely understandable that a lot of people look at it like a technical trainwreck. Because it is sparse in detail in some respects, and it does run at 1152x640 with no AA .

To be honest I would rather have Halo 3 graphics and scale than Halo 4 graphics and scale.

That's no question for me; I easily prefer Halo 3's visuals even with no consideration of scale.

The question, though, is what's technically impressive.

Proves that Sony's WWS are filled with wizards. And now all of them have been set loose on the PS4. It's gonna be a great gen.

Most impressive games of last gen off the top of my head are:
The Last of Us
Uncharted 2/3
God of War 3
Gears of War 3
Killzone 3
Halo 4
Beyond Two Souls
Xenoblade (how the fuck did they get that out of the Wii)
Final Fantasy 13
GTAV

GTA V. Other games might surpass it in terms of raw visuals, such as Halo 4 or Uncharted 3, but in terms of sheer technical might, nothing comes close to GTA V in my books. Open world games aren't supposed to look and sound this good, with so much going on, at 720p on eight year old hardware. I suspect a large portion of the near-$300m budget was on purchasing babies to sacrifice to Lucifer in exchange for tech support, because there ain't no way other way to do it.
