Grand Knights History (PSP) translation patch now available

http://gbatemp.net/threads/grand-knights-history-english-patch-alpha-looking-for-help.365958/

This has kinda come out of the blue, the hacker just popped up this week with it.

Patch is pretty much complete translation-wise as far as the hacker knows, but it hasn't been tested thoroughly, so if you see anything amiss, report it in the above thread.

It's pretty cheap on ebay even from Japan - I have the original version and ripped that and applied the patch to it, and it seems to work fine on my psp - though I've only been playing for a few minutes so far. Dunno if it works with the "The Best" version though.

It looks gorgeous even on PSP 1000 screen.

I tried earlier translations, but this is awesome.

I only have the original PSP 1000 and have never tried any of the subsequent iterations of the system. Were the screens on the later versions better?

The servers were taken down weren't they?

Yeah, I think they went down last october. That was the primary reason we never got an official localisation I believe - the online portion wouldn't have been available for very long.

Yep - got better for the 2000, better on colours for 3000 (but had interlacing problems), and lost the interlacing problems on e1000(but e1000 has other problems - nonremovable battery, mono speakers)

I think you might be asking for a little bit too much from a free fan translation.
Oh no, that was not my intention. A fan translation is awesome, but my -wish- would be to play it on my vita, without any hassle.

I'm sorry for sounding ungrateful. Good job to those involved :)

Hmm, I think a friend of mine might have this game... What's the morality of copying a lent game to the PSP and patching it? I suppose it would be legal as long as I have my friend's game in my possession...

Is the game worth it without the online features? I am really tempted to import this one.

Not really, since the endgame stuff is all about the MP. Wasnt too amused with how the game was designed around that truthfully...

Basically its all about building up characters to send off for the MP portion of the game is how I saw it anyways.

That's a shame. I'll probably skip it, then.

Yup.

The art was nice, at least...

I imported it pretty much just to try it out. Is the patch even worth it, then? I don't have a modded firmware or anything or know where to begin.

Dat art style, might be importing this. PSP fan translation is doing good, VC3, Type 0 and now this. Any other project I should follow?

No idea I dont mess with that sort of stuff really. Ive had the JP ver ever since it launched here. No idea where my copy is in the apartment though atm.

If you want to know whats going on / what to do the yes Id recommend getting yourself sorted out with the patch / firmware etc. Since the combat would help knowing generally what the commands are and such.

Thanks, thats a lot of games getting translated, will follow them, though secretly hoped Yakuza Black Panther to be among those!

Is there an as active translation community for any other console as the PSP?

Historically the nes and snes have been the most active. Hell, aeon genesis have probably translated more on either format then there are fan translated psp games period. Dejap were making patches for great snes rpg's like DQV fifteen years ago.

NES gets a lot as it's a good platform for people starting off, and snes gets a lot as...it's the SNES. Another factor is that both have great emulators and debuggers - geiger had one out for the snes for well over a decade, and byuu has more recently written more advanced ones.

PSP projects are now taking off because of the recently developed debugger in PPSSPP. I vaguely recall one of the hackers being involved in developing that, though I may be wrong.

Id be curious to see the text file of 円卓の生徒 The Eternal Legend. Or more the process that goes into splitting apart everything.

Black Panther is by far the BEST combat system / camera work in the series. The 2nd one not as much... they totally ruined what they had in the first. Same with the replacing of the VA for the main character was a huge fucking mistake.

Is this a from scratch translation, or XSeed's somehow?

Hacker said:

This was a personal project that was meant to allow me and close friends play the game. I wasn't planning on making it public, but I decided that since the most of the work would be done, I'd release it. As such, I won't really be maintaining the project closely (publicly, at least). I plan to release a final version after the alpha, and that would be it.

So I guess this was from scratch and the translator was a buddy.

Actually, it was due to Vanillaware focusing everything on Dragon's Crown. They were supposed to program it for XSEED since they had the translation done, and yeah they had other priorities and didn't do it.

I wouldnt doubt it. Since seriously would have been a bad deal if it didnt sell well. That and once the servers go down there isnt much point to the game itself truthfully.

Id say it was a smart move not to release it. Far too risky than just a game alone considering that its MP centric with its design and needs the server to back it up. Not to mention is a new IP so it wouldnt be like folks purchasing it due to being a well known series.

Did you get a feel for how much was happening on their end? Is it just to link psp's together for battle, or was there unique content coming from their servers, like missions and so forth? If it's the former maybe there'll be some way to emulate it in the future.

You know Im not sure actually as didnt partake in the MP portion during the time when I was playing it. Was still messing around with everything got a pretty good party, sent them off and then figured out yep they aint coming back from the MP side of things. So started a new party instead of turning on the MP mode. That and my geographical location didnt have stable internet to allow me to connect to wifi that was stable so the other reason for not having tried online mode during that time.

But seeing how the SP was basically the way to level up characters for MP was a huge turnoff which is why I had stopped playing after that. Since from a SP perspective there is no real sense of accomplishment so to speak.

Heres some vids though that you can watch which shows the MP mode.

It really was a damned shame since I though the game design with the combat and such was great along with how in general going around the map worked. Just the decision to make the MP part the endgame was a bad bad bad idea.

Cheers, found a linked video with the "final boss"

So there is unique content on the online mode, but I'm guessing it's on the umd - not worth the bandwith to host it on the server. A shame, that'd probably make it lot harder to emulate.

That is a really weird way to structure a game

I dont even think it did all that well in Japan? Its a real unfortunate end to what was an interesting IP personally. Just very poor decision making with the overall game design.

Still for those curious its worth checking out I suppose for the battle system alone that is well done.

Yeah, I've been playing it for a couple of hours and it's really fun. Kind of a bummer to know there's nowhere to really go from here though

Fookin' hell, thanks for these, mate.

On a slightly related note, PPSSPP 0.9.9 is on the way. :D

Well, just as a contemporaneous example, there are (by my count) 14 finished, fully playable translations out for DS (plus a RGC2 patch due any day now, a 3/5ths complete AII2, an ASH patch basically finished but pulled by the translator, and a Tales of Hearts patch that probably would have hit in the next year if not for Namco's latest announcement.) There's about six for PSP. Both systems have actually seen most of their most prominent titles be finished or seriously attempted at this point.

Both are oddly quite a bit more active than the PS2, which despite having a solid PC emulator and a veritable wealth of desirable, untranslated Japanese titles hasn't really seen much in the way of completed projects.

Here is why the rebirth team decides to work on PSP instead of PS3

The PSP version is probably gonna be the first patch (since the current state of the PS2 Emulators regarding debugging functions
doing intensive hack is a huge pain, not to say, almost impossible to me right now)

Awesome, I thought this looked cool back when Xseed announced (and subsequently cancelled) it. Plus it's only $15 on eBay. Oh yeah, I think I'm going to get this.

Well that's funny... I bought this game in Japan last summer thinking there was an English patch already, but my life has been too chaotic and it sat in storage.

I think it was like 500 yen at a Book Off in Kyoto... super cheap....

I'll admit I'm kind of astonished that two of my most wanted PSP games, both mad late releases, were able to get patches released so quickly this year. This new crop of fan translator is even more focused and hardworking than the last! Or maybe PSP dudes just have better tools and project planning I guess? With Grand Knights and Valkyria 3 taken care of, dare I hope that the My Summer Vacation games and the crapload of RPG ports I want have a shot?

Vanillaware's still toiling away on Muramasa DLC as far as I can tell so I'll definitely be giving this a shot at some point while I wait years for that teased Grand Knights PC port that I'm going to personally will into existence.

There was a partial one, which was stopped when xseed announced their localisation.

I think it's a mixture of the debugging tools and the super-open attitude the psp hackers at gbatemp take. If you take a look at the translation threads you'll probably see some of them hit a brick wall after a point, and a hacker from another project come in to take a crack at the problem.

Kinda reminds of White Knight Chronicles. I thought it was the second coming of Xenogears (big Mecha fan), but it turned out to be some utterly trash pseudo MMO.

SO glad someone is finally doing this

Gonna play this again for sure and actually finish the single player

DAMN SHAME this never came to the US when it was supposed to

IT WOULD HAVE KILLED on Vita during the first year drought.

Seems like the final version of this patch (v1.15) came out in August.
Anyone try playing through the game in English? Worth it even without the online component?
