he turned down $5mil to sell the website, not to "keep control"... it is not like you can control NeoGAF, weird wording.

Your sites got to have a $10 million valuation to get an E3 badge. Seriously though, I think the site generates enough that he lives pretty well. I'm not sure x-millions after taxes responsibly budgeted to cover the rest of his life would dramatically change his lifestyle, especially if he lives in an expensive metro. Such offers are probably undervalued to, though I have no idea what websites or x-number of unique traffic are actually worth.

Woah, that is an impressive amount of money.

EviLore must either truly like being the owner of this place or the money he gets through ads and stuff is more valuable on the long run. Or both.

This is my go to site. Been coming here daily for over _5 years now. Originally for gaming side but I find myself paroozing OT more often than not.

I'm sure this place wouldn't at all be the same if evillore were to sell.

Props, EviLore.

Not on turning down the $5M, but on creating a site so rewarding that the superior decision is to turn down the $5M.

I've asked this before and never received a response; I may catch flak for this, but what does EviLore do to "manage" NeoGAF?

From what I can tell, it's moderated by it's own members. I get there's some level of involvement from EviLore on that front; but seeing as how he was able to trek across Europe for 2-3 months - I have to question how involving NeoGAF control is. Seems like as long as the servers are up and accounts secure, then GAF manages itself for the most part.

man, some people are stuck in the 90s.

5 mil isn't shit these days, you can't live comfortably on that and he's already said he loves his job so why sell it? So he can buy coke and hookers for 3 months?

like that saying goes. find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life

What am I reading?

For 5 million dollars it would have no only had a no compete clause, but probably a clause that said "you can't say you sold out the site" clause too. And like 100 more precautions.

For a site with 70 Million page views per month.... would it really be reasonable to offer only 5 million for it? You do notice the advertisements right?

lol You can't live comfortably on 5 mil? I know people who live comfortably on $100,000 a year. I would never have to work another day in my life if I had $5mill socked away. Shoot, even $1 mill.

I could live very, very, very comfortably on 5 mil.

Only about 130,000 other gaf members on this site (for both sides)? Damn, makes it feel pretty intimate compared to any other major social networking or aggregation site out there. It's pretty cool that such a relatively niche site has gained so much infamy and respect in the gaming community.

I understand why Lore didn't want to sell, but I would have at 5 million. Probably cause I'm broke as can be.

Can you imagine though like an IGN or Gamespot taking over? Ugh.

How can anyone comment on EviLore turning down $5m without knowing how much money the site is making him per month/year?

With my lifestyle, I could live VERY comfortably on 5 mil. After putting some of that away to gather interest and stuff, I'd never run out of money unless my life goes through some major changes (getting a wife, kids, etc).

That being said, I wouldn't sell the site either had I been in Evilore's shoes. A steady stream of good income is always better than a single buyout. Unless of course we're talking about a ludicrous amount like what Zuckerberg throws around.

Something about that last .gif of Lore is badass lol. I wonder what the meeting was about with Boyes, etc. Awesome.

If I had 5 millions in my hands tomorrow, I'll probably lose everything in a year or two.

I'd be better with a very good steady income.

Good move !

i know people who live comfortably for $40k a year(to be fair, he doesn't have any kids, only a wife).

The moderation quality dies, the kiddies swarm in, and it's RIP in peace Neogaf.

Barring some non compete, what he should've done is sell it, then take the "staff" with him and start a new site. I think most people would've quickly migrated. The name is well known, yeah, but the community is what makes this place.

if registering for this web site becomes much easier(using a free email account) i am pretty sure member figures would have been in the millions, but to be honest making it difficult is a great way of having a high standards, the youngest members here are in their late teens.

Turned down $5m?
Thanks EviLore !!!
I am sure this place would be much worse without you steering the ship!
Hope you make it all back and more with ad click revenue in the years ahead !!!!

Yikes! That would be awful. Not because it's IGN or GameSpot, but the thought of a corporate entity. I think and assume this is why GAF thrives. It doesn't have to answer to anyone except the owner. No embargoes, no media events, no nothing.

It would be something if GAF had staff though. I mean, I don't think mods are paid, but what if?! :D Dream job for many, no?

Based on the estimated page views from OP, and using an ad revenue calculation I found through Google (though I can't verify the accuracy of it) of $1.20 per 1,000 page views, EviLore would be pulling in $84,000 of ad revenue per month. Obviously you have to take out operating costs to determine the profit from that, and I have no idea what the operating costs would be.

$1.20 per 1,000 is astronomical unless you have gigantic ads that play loud noises and dance across the page. The last time I was running an independent site (not Cracked, which is owned by an actual corporation) those banners were paying 5 cents per thousand.

That was in 2007 though so maybe the market is better now.

Not to sound elitist, but I agree. If GAF allowed everyone to be a member, it would make the forums a lot worse. This is the same reason why GAF is the primary forum I go to. And it's not like GAF is super strict on memberships. Normally, gaming folk (media, devs, etc.) can be approved fairly quickly.

Can you imagine if GAF had a "open to all" forums that gave everyone a membership? It'd be chaos, but can also be a reality TV bit. Best poster wins actual posting rights on the main forum! Haha!
