Risen 3: Titan Lords announced (Piranha Bytes)

No it's not.

The whole industry is just obsessed with controlling every part of the information process.
The same applies to every industry. Apple doesn't want iPhone's designs leaking until they want to show it (even if it's done months before release), Disney doesn't want Star Wars VII's actors or story details leaking until the choose to announce them, George R. R. Martin/publisher doesn't want story details leaking from ASOIAF etc. etc.

I don't give a shit about the graphics but what I don't understand is why after the masterpiece that was Gothic 2 they just never came close to reaching that height again. I guess Jowood is to blame for Gothic 3 and Risen was quite good but then they took a step back again with Risen 2. I don't get it.

I tried to play Risen 2 and it was purely awful.

Made me realise quite how far consoles games have actually come -or not in Risen's case.

I actually like the Risen games, but never played Gothic. I have Gothic 2 & 3. I assume I should start with 2?

As we already argued in the past, Gothic 2 Gold (aka Gothic 2 plus Night of the Raven) is pretty much the pinnacle of Piranha Bytes' production.
And no, this isn't nostalgia talking, I played it for the first time barely a couple of years ago (I played just Vanilla Gothic 2 before).

Couple of new screens grabbed from a German preview.

What the fuck is going on here? These screenshots are beyond bad.

Are they trying to kill whatever hope I have?

The one thing I can be positive about is their emphasis on exploration as the heart of the game.

I remember having not been impressed at all by the Risen promo shots. But as I got to play the game, it looked quite a bit better, to my surprise. Hopefully it's the same case here.

Is there even anyone left from the original Risen/Gothic 1-2 in PB?

It's the first risen still woth playing? might try it out since i keep hearing good things.

Did you play Gothic 2? If you didn't, play it instead.

If you did, Risen is a decent Gothic 2 clone for at least 50% of its playtime.

Amen. Exploration was the best aspect of the first Risen. I was devastated when they talked about the sequel having smaller islands to explore.

I'll probably make a decision to purchase this for the PS3/XB360 closer to release when there should be a significant amount of gameplay footage and other media out. Shame that they're dropping the Pirate theme.

Info bits from a German preview.

- Darker and more open world, less linear and with a lot more freedom to explore
- Nameless hero
- Shadow Lords which pour out of skull-shaped caves which arise out of the earth; these creatures steal the soul of the main character
- Authentic, hand-made world and environments: coasts, forests, mountainous regions, mines, caves and shadow lands
- Daily schedules for NPCs (entering houses will draw the attention of owners and guards)
- Colourful clothes and raw dialogues; improved gestures for NPCs
- The hero's actions make his soul become more human or demonic
- Less linear quests: For admittance to the Mages, you can either do quests or find alternative paths by which you can enter their building (climbing, swimming, etc)
- Fame points
- Interface and inventory look and behave mostly the same as in Risen 2
- Mini-map, two weapon slots, quick slots from 1 to 10
- Mouse and keyboard control; light and heavy strikes, parades, counter-attacks with a secondary weapon such as a pistol; dodge mechanics
- A reworked combat system with clear improvements as regards to animations
- Element-based magic
- Provisions are crafted at campfires

PB has said that minimap can be disabled from the game options. Phew.

Hyperbole, much? For something that will be running on old-gen these look fine.

Edit: Nameless hero? *sigh* Unfortunate.

Never really tried the series before, so I was unaware of that?
It's not just this series, it's a distinctive trait of all their games.
Then again, it's not like it really makes a difference. They could as well name the characters, as they have a (mostly) definite personality and look.
They simply tend to stay anonymous and being referred by others with nicknames and titles.

That's the thing I really can't get used to in video games. It creates a disconnect for me.

This is funny story, because the port was handled by outside team and they only got few months to do in. And PC engine was designed in such way that all the terrain was one big mass. They didn't have time to change engine for 360 version, so this thing was left in there, which meant that the whole ground had to be covered by a single texture. Considering how small 360 memory was it's no wonder it looked like crap.

30 minutes? Game must be in advanced state, I guess.

To be honest, dunno what to think. I guess I'll just wait and see, but not particularly hyped or anything

Just spotted this commentary about a recent presentation Piranha Bytes did.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlFMcr8gR08

All things considered, while this could still not be the ideal Gothic 2 spiritual sequel I was hoping for, it seems like there will be significant improvements over Risen 2 in terms of mechanics.

EDIT: maybe German speaking users here on GAF could want to watch the original video from the presentation, so they can translate interesting bits for us: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_imwt3rcOc

Even though I get all the complaints about Risen 2 I still had a good time with it. There's something unique about Piranha Bytes' games that I really enjoy. Looking forward to this.

I even had fun with Risen 2 and Risen 3 looks alot better. Better World, Combat, Animations, Guild System, Magic etc.

But as a german you must like PB games :D. Gothic 1 and 2 = olymp of 3D RPGs for me :)

I watched the video from the Presentation some days ago, so i dont remember everything but the most important i think is that Risen3 is the last Risen and magic is based on cooldowns and not Mana.

Same, and I agree with you especially on the last sentence.
But that doesn't mean I don't wish really really hard to see them step up their game.

Here is part 2 of the lets play https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzlTyvO6p8c

You can see some combat and the cutest duck in gaming history. For your info, the preview is not a accurate representation how the actual game is. For example, you wouldnt be with the ghost friend when you visit the island for the first time, they just added him to the preview to show npc companions.

There isn't much that wasn't known before. Still, two things of which I think that might be of interest:

- Risen 3 is called the final installment of the series. So their next game should be something new (or maybe even a new Gothic).

- More freedom is promised as the entire world of Risen 3 is supposed to be freely accessible after a short tutorial at the beginning. They also promise more variety in terms of different climate zones.

yup like I said before this feel like Risen 2.5, even the combat is Risen 2 combat.

The combat still look flimsy and broken as all hell, The camera still loose during the combat and you can see how he can't hit the birds right. this wasn't Risen 1 case but something came with Risen 2 combat system and they are still using that awful system.

oh well.

They got back Gothic IP not long ago. so I think they get want to end Risen and go back to revive Gothic.

Oh well, those things were even on the commented version I posted, but thanks anyway.
As we are on it, I'll add one more interesting detail:

- Apparently Piranha Developers claimed in a separate interview that this engine isn't fitted anymore for their future plans and they are going to change it entirely. Chances are they are going to license a new one (which honestly I think would be the best option for them).
EDIT:

...Also, they don't seem particularly interested in continuing the Gothic saga, according to the same interview. Chances are their next game will be a new IP.

hmmm, i try to dash out the most interesting ones:
-final installment in the series
-more freedom, whole island is explorebal after the tutorialpart
[some parts where you can climb, swimming is now possibel]
-several guilds again (gothicstyle, who would have tought :D)
[guild that is presented: watchers [seem to be paladins]
-not the same hero as in risen 2
-i really don't wanna write the whole story down ^_^
-fighting "we improved the whole system" "it feels more dynamic"
-we tried to take the best parts/mechanics from the games we already made

things i took out of it:
seems like still no jumping
seems like several islands again (he called it mageisland on 2 occasions)

well, seeing as this looks alittle bit like risen 2 i am scared
still hiped and probably gonna get the game anyway :)
[what can i say, im a sucker for gothicgames]

things i took out of it:

As in all previous PB games you can jump (can be seen in the second let's play). The animation just looked incredibly stupid in Risen 1/2.
You can still only climb on predefined ledges though (even if they promise that there are a lots of them). But at least they brought swimming back.

seems like several islands again (he called it mageisland on 2 occasions)

Definitely, but that isn't new information either. You will have to travel between islands by ship.
