Nintendo planning affiliate program to split revenues with video creators

Edit : official PR

Nintendo has been permitting the use of Nintendo copyrighted material in videos on YouTube under appropriate circumstances. Advertisements may accompany those videos, and in keeping with previous policy that revenue is shared between YouTube and Nintendo. In addition, for those who wish to use the material more proactively, we are preparing an affiliate program in which a portion of the advertising profit is given to the creator. Details about this affiliate program will be announced in the future.

Just saw this on Twitter :

Nintendo is planning a YouTube affiliate program to split advertising proceeds with video creators.

From Cheesemeister.

Sounds good. Can anyone translate the text?

First tweet is basically Nintendo saying they've ID Tagged all their recent content, which will get ads for Nintendo.

Second tweet is them saying that they're gonna have an agressive affiliate program, to share ad revenues with video content creators. More details to follow soon.

God dammit, I have been wanting to post about this but I can't due to being a Junior Member :/

All in the all, this seems to be an interesting scheme with Nintendo reaching out to creators. I will look forward to see how it turns out. I wonder if it will affect Mario Kart TV?

Provided there's not some sort of catch in the fine print, this is surprisingly forward-thinking for Nintendo, or any game company for that matter.

Good move.

Wonder when they'll decide to roll out the program. I'm guessing after Mario Kart 8.

Good on Nintendo for the change. It's funny to think that a year ago Evo almost lost out on Melee because Nintendo was being dumb.

To be fair, it wasn't due to Nintendo being dumb, it was due to both sides being dumb. If I recall correctly, EVO didn't ask for permission, despite the fact that it is the standard procedure. Nintendo didn't need to react the way that they did, but using someone else's content to raise money, even if it's for charity, without informing them is just bad form and technically illegal.

So what exactly do these programs entail?

We don't know yet. They say details are to come at a later date

It sounds goddamned terrible to me, I don't know why the rest of you are excited. I guess that's why they first pull up the drawbridge - an affiliate program is 'better than nothing' rather than 'a giant shit'.

Because it shows that they're willing to work with the community.

Ideally this is the best of both worlds. IP holders get ad revenue on content that uses their IPs footage and content creators still get some money for the content they are making (though not as much as if the IP holder isn't getting any).

Hope it doesn't end badly.

This. Nintendo are also pretty much trying to get money from free advertising others do.

Given the Smash tournament, E3 would make kinda sense.

About damn time Nintendo realized that Youtubers aren't out to harm them and that they are effectively free advertising.

Hope my network gets chosen to be an affiliate so I can start LPing Mario games again.

I see this as an attempt to control the community.

Yeah, that's clearly it...

Youtube content creators really have no right earning money off of copyrighted material, and companies are well within their right to use Content ID to get the revenue from it. The fact Nintendo is doing this is a good thing.

You do realise they aren't the only company who is using the content ID system, right?

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
.... Now remove region lock and we can all be friends again.

This is good news (with the limited amount of detail for now) for me since I was planning to start a gaming channel in the next year and Let's Playing Nintendo games would be my default idea. Being able to Let's Play Wii games but not having to fiddle around with composite cables would be great.

This... Another reason I hate Capcom :p

To be clear, you can on a private LP network play Nintendo games already, but there is a good chance Nintendo will not only not allow you to monetize your videos, but will monetize them for themselves (putting ads in your videos even if you don't want any ads on them).

This will likely be like other affiliate programs where Nintendo signs a contract with a network (a group of youtube channels) and only those people on the network will be able to monetize them.

Just making sure you're aware that if you plan on monetizing videos, this may not mean anything to you unless you join a network.

Nintendo decides who gets paid. If Nintendo doesn't like the content they might decide to not pay that person.

This is control over youtubers.
