It worked for Vita.

I think our sense of what "works" is completely skewed at this point: I'm not sure I'd refer to the Vita's sales as "Working." 3DS is on the cusp of poor sales, and only salvaged by the fact that it has already sold 15M+ units.

It's a testament to how far unit sales have fallen that 14k units/week is considered saved.

The mario kart boost is coming. Never would have guessed wii u would overtake ps4 so soon.

Based on this weeks figures I'm not convinced it's going to be that high. 20k for Wii U would be my guess for next week. They really needed a price cut + a MK8 hardware bundle over there..I don't think they are doing either.

Yeah for Youkai Watch! And I really wasn't expecting the Wii U to outsell the PS4 this week... o_O

Oh, and can someone with Photoshop skillz edit the "Gamepad outside the window in the rain" to make the GamePad hold a bloody kitchen knife... and add a part of the DS4 next to a visible pool of blood? :p

This needs to be done. Japan claims another victim.

Yokai Watch hitting a million is pretty nice.

I wonder how PS4 would have looked like this week if Infamous didn't release. The tiny bump still managed to be eclipsed by Wii U of all things. I guess the series was never big in Japan?

Ah, yes, in my post in the other thread I was referring specifically to 3DS: it doubled WE2014's debut despite this being not a main title, but the usual World Cup version.
I understand :) Looks like many people have retired their PSPs and goes for the 3DS version instead.

Does anyone know how popular Minecraft is in Japan.
Could the Vita version do anything for the Vita over there?

[360] Minecraft - 15,934

But to be fair, it has only been available on 360 and PC which are both dead in Japan, so it isn't really a fair way to gauge its popularity.

Week 14 Sales Comparisons

WII - 1,752,238
NDS - 1,700,752
3DS - 1,033,333
PSP - 952,181
WiU - 820,545
PS3 - 657,872'
PSV - 608,784
PS4 - 576,787
360 - 120,491

Does anyone have weekly Dreamcast numbers and if so is it beating PS4 yet?
I actually didn't think the PS4 would have a worse week than the Wii U at the same time in its life. The fact that this was Infamous' first week makes it even worse.

There must have been some sale for NSMBU in mist of MK8.

Some people buying a console and game ahead of Mario kart is likely it. NSMBU sales were up almost 1800 units and Wii U sales up 2022 from prior week.

Really worrying numbers for PS4. Release schedule does not seem like it will be helpful for awhile either.

Anyone who is surprised by PS4's numbers... I don't know what you all were expecting.

2014 was always going to be the year where PS4 had to stay in the trenches and pray to god that its downward momentum won't damage the console's sales potential in year 2/3.

Keeping track of the past year, it was clear that 90% of the console scene in Japan is still comfortable with PS3 development, and that anything for 2014 is a blip in the radar, without sustainability or a constant flow of releases. ( unlike the PS3/Vita/3DS right now )

I've said it before, whoever is at Sony better pray to the gods of game development that FFXV is a late 2015 release for Japan. Sony needs the momentum to pick up next year as soon as possible, and also for the big western publishers to quickly abandon last-gen.

Yes, the Japanese have clearly shown they prefer mobile to handhelds and especially to dedicated home consoles. I don't think the Japanese video game industry is struggling as significantly as these charts would lead one to conclude, it's just that the type of games doing very well (on iOS and other mobile platforms) aren't being tracked.

Overall spend could be the same or greater but much of that is from F2P cash-grabs on a handful of games. That doesn't seem very healthy to me but certainly it depends one's definition of "health."

Wait, there's no Winning Eleven for Vita?

This game probably re-uses the engine and most assets for WE2014, which was a PS3/PSP/3DS game.

That's probably the reason why it wasn't on the system. I think WE2015 will be on Vita.

I think our sense of what "works" is completely skewed at this point: I'm not sure I'd refer to the Vita's sales as "Working." 3DS is on the cusp of poor sales, and only salvaged by the fact that it has already sold 15M+ units.

Well, have you seen May new releases? They're really, really bad. It's not surprising sales have gone so low...

With Vita not growing and PS4 dead at arrival (Until FFXV and even with that.. who knows), i'd be Sony, i would really work on a real dematerialized, portable PS3, tablet form factor. I think that could take Japan like a storm.
it would basically be the xl portable japan wants, with all the PS3 catalog on it. Instant Vita and 3DS killer, and a second life for PS3 with lots of rpgs.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Why people was expecting a boost in Japan caused by...inFAMOUS, of all things?

Watch Dogs could generate something, instea ( = back to over 10,000 for a week)

It took Wii U 23 weeks to sell as bad as PS4 has been doing since week 13.

Dang, 3DS tracking half as good as last year to this point. It's not as if 3DS is having software drought, either.

Wow, it had a game release and still was outsold by the wii U? Whats going on over there. SCEJ needs to do something and quick I think.

Pretty bad numbers across the board, but I'll admit I expected Infamous to do less than that. How did the other games do in comparison?

Similarly, I'm quite surprised PS4 dropped below WiiU already though. It was an inevitability, but I figured it would be at least another week away. I guess Mario Kart's "hype" is going to breathe some life into the WiiU sales for the next few weeks. Curious to see which WiiU titles we can expect to see bumped as well.

Yes, I'd never imagined to see PS4 selling lower than the Wii U until a couple of weeks ago. Especially considering that today we are seeing Infamous debut VS nothing new on the other hw (and I don't think that MK8 release is so much important to push people buying the console today...it's not that there is the risk of sold-out for the Wii U when MK8 will launch, to me...).
It must be said that obviously Infamous is not a Japan-focused software

I agree. I'd just say that probably having sold 15+ million units of HW is part of the reasons why the 3DS is now selling not so well. But your general point still stands.

Actually yeah, PS Now could be a good money maker for Sony over there since Japan seems to have no interest in consoles (and little in handhelds) at the moment.

I can't even remember anything being announced at TGS last year :(

Except a new Gravity Rush trailer...

Sony actually did an event like 2 weeks before TGS were they announced Phantasy Star Nova, some Danganronpa stuff and more. I'm not sure if the 2000 model + VitaTV was announced there too.

To be entirely fair, while the 3DS numbers this week is awful, last year was SMT IV's launch week and it had a bundle. Probably wouldn't have reached 50k if it wasn't for it.

Yokai Watch just smashed through the one million barrier. I think "little interest in handhelds" is wrong, and it's really "little-to-no interest in Sony handhelds".

Vita TV was indeed announced at TGS: it was the last news provided at the SCEJA conference.
