Yeah, but then you had interest in the games, otherwise you wouldnt have bought it(?) =) I bought Knack, Call of Duty Ghosts and Killzone Shadow Fall at launch. I havnt even inserted Knack and CoD Ghosts into my PS4 yet. But i still bought the PS4 because i was interested in the games. I played quite a lot of Killzone though.
It was more of a "Oh I have those games, may as well get the system"

But as schuelma said this is off topic

Lol the tears are delicious. To the masses they are the best versions but not all of us can be the elite discerning PC/Nintndo gamer. All of us duped by the hype just parting with $400 willy nilly.
I guess I just don't see promise as such a negative thing. It's not worth getting so defensive over.

I cant see why many people would buy a PS4, or whatever gaming system it might be, early on if they have very little interest in the current offerings on the system. Makes little sense to me at least. Have anyone here done it for example? Why not just wait until the game(s) that they are interested it before they buy it instead? In that case, maybe even a price drop has happened. Even if someone buys into the hype, it means that there is excitement there to begin with, which is most likely related to the games. That excitement can of course go down after a while, but there is still a reason for that initial hype/excitement.

Yikes, I actually bought the PS4 because I anticipated it'd be the defacto console for those "Japanophile"-ish games going forwards, looks like I should have believed that one moderator who said Japan was going to stick with the PS3 >_< Oh well, better take my pick from Evolve, Batman, Destiny, Battlefield, Fifa, Madden, Drive Club... I think Sony surely recognizes what the situation in Japan is like and will prepare some games for that market, but I recognize that right now their priority is to get Western gamers signed up for PS-Plus so they can make a profit off of their console business.

^ Correct, the PlayStation brand has been around for some time, so for many consumers interested in the top selling Western franchises, they can expect a continuation of those franchises on the PlayStation.

Yeah PS4 has a lineup that rivals Vita's 2012 omg how did this happen shit tier. Wii U's actually having games wins by default. It's still a bad lineup because there is nothing in between those breaks.

I mean come on if this list is accurate. And there is very little time for something big to come in the next couple months.

One thing that strikes me as conspicuous by its absence: are there any first-party small-scale downloadable titles on the way for PS4? The equivalents of the NES Remix titles or Pushmo, approximately? I'm not really aware of any, and they'd be able to bolster the lineup quite nicely during the slower months.

Sure, but i dont think you would have bought the system if you had next to no excitement for the games? I mean, i do kinda see what people mean with the "selling on hype" arguement, but i still feel that its worth pointing out that it is mainly the games that leads to this hype/excitement.

Yeah, its off topic when we're talking about the western sales indeed. Although i think that this arguement can be applied to any system, also in Japan.

Did you buy a PS4 at launch and put it in the closet waiting for the games to come? Thats the only situation i was referring to in that post =) I know that people can buy a gaming system early on and then be most excited about the upcoming games. But to have no interest in the current games? In that case, i dont see why people would buy a gaming system now instead of waiting for the interesting games to be released. People do what they want of course, i'm not judging, but i just dont see any reason to buy a system, put it in a closet and then wait for the games to come out.

EDIT: I guess maybe just the last paragraph was a reply to my post :)

I always buy every gaming system. The only one I'm missing right now is the Xbox One. Since I knew I would buy it down the road and I already had 3 games for it, I just picked one up.

Was I excited for it? Not really, it was a novelty. I have been a PC gamer for quite some time now (Between WoW raiding and D3 my console gaming time outside of the Ds/3DS has all but evaporated)

That spreadsheet was made by another user here, not sure who. He stopped updating the Wii U numbers some time ago, either because he was too busy or it became obvious the Dreamcast / Wii U streams would never cross.

That spreadsheet is up to date (Notice this week's number above Mario Kart 8, he's just some random numbers for the rest)

Lol, I wonder if Japan would be interested in the bone if that Dragons Dogma 2 rumour ends up being true.

Is this a new rumour? To my understanding, Dragon's Dogma cratered outside Japan. It also locked up a large amount of Capcom's internal development resources, which might be part of why they became so big on outsourcing last gen. I'd be surprised if Capcom was eager to get into the same situation again.

Depressing numbers all round.

All systems desperately need to get some compelling releases and soon. If there isn't some sort of upturn in general a la the PSP MonHun bump of several years ago, then I don't see much of a future for console games in a recognisable form in Japan after this generation.

If they couldn't be interested in the 360 they won't be for the Xbox One. Actually it's probably going to sell less than the 360.

I don't seriously think SH like IF, CH, Nis would go to mobile, it's not worth it for their kind of games and the audience that buy them. Some efforts from the major SH would go to mobile, but certainly not all of them, due to the kind of games and the audience that buy them.
One can replace the word mobile in your post with "Nintendo systems" quite easily. I'm not sure why one would consider the latter a more favorable environment. While the former is still a rapidly growing market.

Gibson tweets :

Visited local Bic Camera store 2hrs after open to see availability of MK8 today, plenty

BoyOZqgIgAAvZcI.jpg:large

Bic Camera person said MK8 sales have not driven WiiU hardware and not expected to, will sell out today with new supplies tomorrow.

Does that imply software is selling but mainly to existing HW owners.

Well, we've already seen people buying the console during Week 20, so it's probably just current owners buying it Day 1, the others will do it this week-end? I dunno, kinda hard (and silly) to draw any conclusion based on a few hours sales at one store, so I'll stop right there.

But anyway, not setting my expectations too high (even without Gibson's tweet, btw).

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Yeah, better wait for more general reports, or for impressions from other retailers, or for both.

Japan Retail Sales Fall at Record Pace After Tax Increase

Japan’s retail sales (JNRETMOM) dropped at the fastest pace in at least 14 years last month after the first consumption-tax increase since 1997 depressed consumer spending.

Sales in April declined 13.7 percent from the previous month, the trade ministry reported today, more than the median forecast of an 11.7 percent decline in a Bloomberg News survey of 11 economists.

Yikes.

Here I thought I was being pessimistic when I thought WiiU might double their sales for a week thanks to MK8.

Man, Japan is such a weird market. I guess we really need those mobile sales as well, or there won't be much to discuss in a few years.

And Water Blue, Purple, Brown, Amethyst, WhiteGold, Tourmaline, Moonstone etc.

They also registered the PokemonDeltaEmerald.com domain the same day they did PokemonOmegaRuby.com and PokemonAlphaSapphire.com

It stopped selling once it went to 450$ here and the games went from a lot at launch to a trickle right now. So uh... yeah hype definitely played a huge factor in it. Hell, I bought into the god damn hype and I barely play my system.

Ergo the very definition of selling to gaming enthusiasts who were :

1 - Tired of the current generation
2 - Bought into Sony's hype machine (which was very very efficient for the western market)

Your anecdotes mean jack shit. Sorry.

PS4 has an attach ratio of 3 and has had great software sales and has one of the most persistent online communities in games like BF and presumably FIFA and COD as well. People are buying it for the games whether that displeases you or not.

It might just be me, but I was expecting more Mario Kart 8 stock even if it's just one store, doesn't seem to be that much to me.

Why would they expect it to not drive hardware? Or do they mean they expect all of the current Wii U owners will buy it and it'll sell out?

Come on, that's one store, and 2h after opening.

By the way, did we get any shipment data for MK8? Can't wait for the sellthrough data this week-end. I'm sure Nintendo overshipped the hell outta the game.

Dude it's Psycho_Mantis, when it's anecdotal for the PS4, it means jack shit, when it's anecdotal in one single store for the WiiU, it's prety bad, you should get used to it :p

Okay, I didn't say it was representative of MK8/WiiU sales as a whole, just that the info from the store about WiiU not getting a notable bump was not good. I didn't know it was 2 hours after opening though.

Thank you.

I'm predicting PS4 will fall behind Dreamcast in week 33.
PS4 launched in Feb. It didn't even have one holiday season yet. Once it does, you and noone else will make Dreamcast comparisons anymore, and you will no longer remember you ever did.

Ah, I see... my bad then. Gibson says it's 2h after opening in the first tweet, though the way he phrases everything can be confusing (like the second one... talking about new shipment for games... even though it looks like he's taking about the Wii U itself).

...

We really need shinra-bansho (?) for the launch day pics in stores!
