Regular snaking wasn't hard to do, but it still completely ruined the online in Mario Kart DS.

I'm not really familiar with snaking but I don't see how this hopping can ruin online or can be even seen as cheating. Are you guys just reluctant to learn advanced techniques in your games? Did anybody think strafejumping is cheating in Quake 3?

LATIN, MATRIPEDICABUS, DO YOU SPEAK IT
Hop when you come out of a spark boost and you maintain momentum better than just staying on the ground. It works with everything other than inward turning bikes.

I've been unconsciously doing this a lot after boosts all this time because I'm often trying to start another drift right after. zomg am i teh cheatzors!?!

That hopping thing doesn't look all that bad. Like people already said here that will be beneficial for single play, but it'll be harder to pull off in MP.

Kinda seems like a bug, to be honest. Though it impacts gameplay in a way that doesn't break the game, so who knows if they'll patch it. It's kinda like the Point to Point "shortcuts" in MK7.

Maybe they'll prevent it from happening in online and keep it on for local so it doesn't break time trials?

I'd say it's only bad if it can't be applied across the board to all bikes and karts. If this does become the norm, bikes may end up becoming obsolete online.

Stuff like that (To my knowledge) didn't limit what you could use online. This game is already poorly balanced, and this just fucks it up even more

Doesn't seem cheap at all...

It's unfair that your drift boost will last longer / have a better effect that mine simply because you mastered this technique, it makes no sense. I'm in favor of normalization. Now, hopping to better line up for your next drift is completely fair.

I respectfully disagree with people saying it doesn't make a difference online/with items.

A situation where first and second place are among themselves, with the rest of the pack trailing far behind, arises all the time. If the guy in first used the technique and the guy in second place didn't, the guy using it would have a serious advantage, period.

So many over reactions to the snake hopping.

I really don't see how this is any different from getting a boost start, trick boosts or recovery boosts from previous games. They're all inside techniques that need to be honed. There will always be elite players that know how to get an extra few seconds out of each track even if its perfecting a corner cut.

I just gave it a quick go and I think it's a bit beyond my capabilities so I think I'll leave it. But I have respect for those who have mastered it.

Because he is better at Mario Kart 8...

I'll smoke your ass using Roy on a bike if that'll make you feel better? :)

Meme proliferation is no excuse for cheating, intentional or not! ;)

It's true, he can.

And will.

My futile hops last night barely did anything haha. Think you still pulled in front for three of the four races I saw you in.

In reply to above, on my screen she actually wasn't hopping. Just... going really fast. Mario Kart handles any lag funny, so that was probably my Internet acting up.

The thing is, it's not something to master really. It's the same as holding down acceleration when the 2 stops at the countdown, it's very simple.

The better player won, then

Same. I discovered this after chaining left/right drifts back to back to back... id miss or hit the wrong direction coming out of a boost and have to hop another one to two times and noticed i didn't slow down near as much. Accidental discovery. That said i don't take it to the extreme like the RR WR video... and i don't think it's cheating... more an exploit. I do hope it is patched though.

Personally I think it's unfair that people who master drifting are able to get speed boosts at all. As a technique that wasn't around from the original Mario Kart I think it shouldn't be a required technique to compete. It honestly makes no sense to me, why would sparks give you a huge boost, it bottles the mind. Now I'm all for the sharper turns that occur based on drifting, but... *vomits blood all over myself*

Oh God I'm so sorry I don't know what happened.

Mario Kart 8 is such a great game, I actually posted a review about it here if anyone is still on the fence about it (but why would you be?).

I have never had this much trouble on 150 CC, the AI kicks my ass like every race, yet I am still consistently in the Top 3 every race, I don't know what's going on!

Hmmm, the guy in first place has superior knowledge of the game and can pull of an advanced technique. He's obviously better thus he should win.

You're just a great player...that's why :)

Not cheap. Cheating.

How is this even remotely close to cheating?

edit: lol

Not sure if serious

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
Ever since learning that you get a boost by doing tricks in the air, ive been doing it with every single small bump in the road lol

you're cheating shame on you

Some places it's actually better to not trick. Wario Stadium's three little mud panels come to mind. Tricks keep you in the air for a longer time that can really add up over time.

Well, that escalated quickly :p

Just learn the skill, folks. It's not that big of a deal-breaker (at least for me), especially when everybody here knows how to do it. If it makes us better players then why not? And I'm yet to do that myself.
