Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Just wanna add that "PlayStation" is also commonly shortened to "pure sute" (PlaSta) in Japan, so you might hear people say "pure sute fo-" instead of "pii esu fo-".

Pure sute sounds way too similar to pure shit.

Sorry :(

Indeed. There are major Japanese developed titles with western appeal that will release on PS4. Those alone will be enough to get the PS4 out of the doldrums, whether or not it will be enough for it to be successful and attract other third parties into the ecosystem remains to be seen though. Games like FF could sell 2m on a 4m installed base and just have a very high attach rate with hardcore gamers leaving little to no room for non-major titles.

The difficult part for Sony is that it is out of their hands, they do not have any major internal cards to play to revitalise the PS4 in Japan. Hot Shots Golf will only take them so far, and really they need it out this holiday season with a massive promotion to try and get at least some people back on board. GT is dead in Japan, they have no internal RPG studios, third parties are happy releasing on PS3 (see Persona) and Japan Studio is still a pile of wank.

So, you expect FFXV it to come out in 2017-2018 in Japan. Good. XD

well, at least it seems that KH3 actually exists. that to me could reallty be a big hit.

Why wouldnt it exist ? xD They announced it last year and the Osaka team is working on it iirc. Still dont expect it before 2016/2017.

I quoted a post that defined the PS4 screwed because of lack of info on FFV. on the other side today we received an actual update on the other bug SE title coming to PS4, that could be seen as a key factor for the console in that market.

KH3 is further off than FFXV, which is more important to the Japanese console market. In terms of big titles, the PS4 is probably just going to get MGSV and potentially another Yakuza in the meantime.

He was talking about sales (based on the quote). In other words he thought it might sell out (based on what we now know was the shipment).
Well, even at 81% sell through, that likely implies at least some degree of supply constraint. How often does anything go over 90%? It's not really feasible for anything to completely sell out in three days in an entire territory.

Hopefully there's another (smaller) shipment for week 2 so that we can get an accurate look at how well it holds.

I'm very, very, VEEERY interested in Persona Q's debut: the first entry for a Nintendo system, and it's a Persona x Etrian Odyseey game, mechanics-wise.

Good. Atlus is likely pleased, and this hopefully proves that the Persona fan base will go wherever the series goes.

Looking good for Persona.

To be fair I doubt there are many Atlus fans without a 3DS, not to mention that it's a combined with the Gameplay of their successful DS/3DS RPG series. It's pretty much the perfect product for the system, if this was P5 we probably would have a bunch of fan boycotts.

Haha Nintendo mainline Persona dream to live again to some people.
What's so funny about that? Wouldn't be shocked if the next Nintendo handheld would get a port or remake of a mainline Persona title. Or not.

It's not like their are dodging Nintendo consoles, just because of the name - there is no need for other options right now. This might not be the case on 3-4 years, who knows.

I don't think it'll be a particularly good measure. Ultimately Persona Q is a fanservice spinoff targeting both Persona fans who want more of -anything- Persona, and EO fans who want more of that sort of gameplay. The yardstick for how popular Persona has gotten at this point will be how well Persona 5 sells. Everything else is just a distraction to make Atlus more money.

Indeed. Persona Q is likely the first stage to preparing the Persona fan base for a Nintendo-only handheld future. I wonder how Falcom and Nippon Ichi will deal with it.

Or it's Atlus just experimenting with the franchise. It's not like they haven't done that before (Arena) or won't continue to do so (Dancing All Night).

It's a Persona themed EO game. EO games are on the DS and 3DS because of a key gameplay mechanic. Pretty simple thought process there. It's not a console war, it's just a standard business decision. Stop reading into everything with your fanboy tinted glasses. It's embarrassing to read.

Yep there preparing Persona fanbase for next Nintendo handheld on the older one with their biggest game they ever created coming soon to PS3. Please dude. The patern is pretty clear EO themed game for 3DS, Dancing Miku like game for Vita, big new JRPG for PS3.

keeping the dream alive i see. it will likely take 3 years before the next mainline persona comes out anyway and by that time they most likely will stick with ps4. imo there will be persona 5 for ps3 then persona 5 golden for vita/ps4 and then 2 years later we can see if it shifts platforms but i highly doubt it. they have been successful in sharing the love . SMT on Nintendo and Persona on PlayStation unless they start doing multiple platforms at once even then the difference between nintendo and playstation platforms is significant that the resource requirements would be pretty high for simultaneous multiplatform development

Arg ffs, PS4 is so screwed in Japan.

Video gaming wasn't my hobby when Vita released, but was its first year line up and future outlook for Japanese titles as bad as PS4 is now?

Vita had an abysmal first-year holiday lineup. PS4 looks to be even worse. They need Square to drop FFXV: Noctis Prologus or something.

Really? I haven't actually seen it in person--the price tag is way too high just for that. That's why the Vita TV was such an easy purchase.

So, essentially, you think that there's no other reason for this other than the gameplay? Honestly, I think at the very least they're interested in gauging the sales potential of the Persona franchise on a Nintendo handheld. It's unlikely that Sony releases another handheld, so I think they're trying to see what the best move for next gen will be. I don't think that necessarily makes me a fan boy.

Yes I think there is no other reason for this other than Atlus wanting to make as much money as possibly by putting out as many Persona games as possible leading up to Persona 5. We have a Persona themed EO game on the 3DS, a Persona fighter sequel on arcade/PS3/360, a Persona dancing game on Vita, a series of Persona 3 animated films, and another upcoming TV animation series based on Persona 4 Golden.

Note 1: MHFU Best opened with 20k an finished over 1 million, but it's not the first week of the game.

portableseriessales20bsxph.png

Note 2: PRG weekly sales are sort of a mess, but that's what Famitsu printed at the time (according to people who had the magazine and copied the sales). The PRGB interpolated series considers only RG until B was released, but B sales weren't tracked by Famitsu weekly initially because the game was exclusive to some store or konbini or whatever; eventually they added B to the RG total and sales jumped as shown in the red line. Still, the reality is that RGB weekly sales were probably higher than what is shown.

Note 3: Both images include Famitsu estimated downloads as well as re-releases.

Sequels opening comparison:

MHF: 118k / 1,123k
MHF2: 746k

PRGB: 109k / 7,783k
PY: 851k

BA: 44k / 3,874k
BA2: 416k

PTR: 28k
(UJL: 182k)
PTR2: 50k (PS2 err...)

I think they simply saw an opportunity to make some extra money by releasing a Persona-themed EO game. This also helps them grow the brand awareness in the preparation of Persona 5 release, along with other Persona themes games and media releases. This doesn't necessary means that they are preparing to move Persona franchise to a Nintendo platform.

I don't think we can say either way. If it's successful, I don't see why they wouldn't consider doing something like this again. But I just don't think it indicates that there is much interest in the company to specifically target the 3DS for Persona right now.

Good sales for Mario Kart 8 but the hardware bump was definitely unspectacular. Wii U will probably end up around 4M now. There's not much scope for them to push to 5M or 6M unless there's major new IPs but those would have a lot of work to do now.

PS4 will have a battle on it's hands to even get to 3M. FF isn't guaranteed to hit a million and the likes of MGS/RE might not get past 500K.

The 'traditional' gaming market in Japan will continue to consolidate to handhelds, although as the development costs rise there, it's going to start facing the same challenges as consoles are now.

There will be attempts by third parties at cracking mobile but mobile isn't an easy market either. Being limited to a single touchscreen also means it's going to be hard to maintain consumer interest in mobile gaming which at some point not too far in the future could hit a terminal decline.

Hm.. what makes you think that i have a problem with what you said about those system? Even if i would disagree with what you're saying about those system, i wouldnt have any problem with what you're saying about them. I mean, there is no denying that the PS4 is selling very low at the moment and that few games are announced for it from japanese publishers, the numbers dont lie. And Vita's upcoming situation is anyone's guess (although i havnt seen any noticeably drop in software support for the Vita during the last 6 months or so). But what i think about this isnt really that important in this case. I was asking you where you think the support will go since you think it would be less fragmentation. If the PS3 and PSP support is going away (as it indeed is), and the PS4 and the Vita wont get much support like you say(?), that only leaves the 3DS and the WiiU. Are you saying that the 3DS and/or the WiiU will get almost all software support in the future? I'm just wondering what your thoughts are regarding where the support will go that will/could lead to less fragmentation.

EDIT: Well, there is also the Xbox One, but i guess its already safe to assume that this system wont sell much in Japan, nor get much software support from japanse publishers.

You are really asking some very awkward questions, why should I refer to WiiU?

Don´t know where you are pulling off this 6 month timeframe? Also a shift in support doesn´t happen overnight and PSV isn´t exactly known to have a good lineup and therefore doesn´t have alot to lose anyway.

PSV was given the benefit of the doubt mainly due to PSP and some of its biggest sellers actually have been PSP/PSV multiplattform titles like God Eater 2 and Toukiden. PSV is mainly supported by very niche developers and ports so far helped to fill some gaps, I doubt they will go away, they have carved in a tiny niche which they seem to be happy with, but on the other hand I don´t think PSV will benefit a lot in the next years from the upcoming free resources resulting from the retiring of PS3 and PSP. Actually it could even cause matters to get worse, because those systems have been one of the biggest resources to port games from. And one of its biggest supporter KoeiTecmo seems to be running out of material to port (Gust-Atelier series for example).

Also since some really haven´t understood that I´m not talking about franchises with western appeal I want to point out that I´m refering to games with the focus on the Japanese audience. For the former they will continue their strategy of console releases, other than that exceptions like Yakuza and Tales. Looking at the development in the past few years, it seems that most publishers aren´t as happy to make big risks and instead concentrate on few established and strongest IPs. A strategy which likely will lead to an insufficient quantity of titles in this category. These games likely won´t even suffice to help a system selling like PS3 in Japan, which also wasn´t a sales juggernaut.

Apparently Monster Hunter Frontier G on Vita requires at least a 16GB memory card. Why is Capcom releasing that?

It would be a lot easier if you just outright tell us all where Yakuza and Tales are apparently going, instead of keeping us all in such suspense. Where are Atelier and Disgaea going? Where are NIS and Gust and Arc System Works moving all their software too?

Persona Q is going to be really interesting because it could be an indicator of how much the Persona audience can buy a game exclusive to a non-Sony console. Still, it's true that it's a special thing, which combines Persona characters and EO gameplay, and that it's highly possible Atlus never intended it to be the game to answer their question "What if we bring Persona on Nintendo?". But I think that a much better result than what they forecasted could make them think that there CAN be an audience for Persona games on Nintendo consoles, which could translate on another Persona Q-esque game on 3DS. However, going over 3DS, it could translate in something more, like next Nintendo handheld receiving the Golden-like ports of home entries. Obviously, a big result from Persona Q would be only a factor for such a decision, not THE factor: several things should happen in order to see a similar pattern change, and while Persona Q being highly successful is one of them, it's certainly not the most important (Vita not having a successor, how PS4 will sell in the future, etc.).

Then you should have read my last post more carefully, I don´t see a change in their strategy when it comes to Yakuza and Tales of. The latter in part because Baba doesn´t understand very well the market (SRPG spinoff, not one but two remakes beeing major flops) but mainly because the FF and Tales of fanbase share the same audience. About the publishers and developers you listed, besides them beeing irrelevant even in Japan and NIS even in danger to go bankrupt, I think they´ll continue targetting their niche of perverted otakus.
