Eiji Aonuma: “No one explicitly said that that was Link.”

Breasts doesn't matter if she is purposely in disguise

I think you might have something here. A female character pretending to be Link. Every angle except the face shot at the end indicated a woman to me. Though I know anime artists love them some androgyny, this seems to be taking it farther than usual.

It all makes sense now!...Time Travel!

The breast debate reminds of the fact that there are still people who think Sheik is a guy. It's either Zelda, female Link, just plain Link (hopefully), or at the very worse in border-line "you're changing too much Aonuma" territory, Link is customizable.

:( hype is slowly, but surely, deflating.
I say its either female Link or a younger than Skyward Sword male Link.
or its Aonuma disguised
I just can't see Zelda in this teaser character.

It's fun to speculate, and I'd love to play as Zelda, but it's almost certainly Link.

I hope there isn't a huge backlash when people find out it's not a playable Zelda, or other female character.

Yeah, I mean realistically speaking even between the two I guess playable female Link is more likely for the game than playable Zelda so it'd still be "Link" as the main hero/heroine, but yeah Zelda would be great too and either a neat mix up. And not a bad thought if Zelda as some said in a way kind of finally an actual Legend of Zelda lol (Legend of Korra).

Kinda thinking the backlash will now be pretty huge depending upon how they answer thanks to Aonuma if it's just Link. Good job Aonuma lol...

LOL at Snake and Geralt and the comments with the pic/gif.

Twist: Aonuma hasn't decided yet and he's waiting to see the reactions. He's reading this thread!

LOL

I could totally see that being the reasoning The Lamonster lol.

Come on thats clearly a female
The small but noticeable breasts, the more feminine bone structure.

What's with people using gender specific pronouns to refer to the character when nothing regarding their identity or gender has been confirmed?
Just take it as reflecting what they're expecting and either not wanting to be overly pedantic or don't want to use they for whatever reason.

It does seem likely we're looking at Link or someone like Link again, although either Zelda there or (possibly more interesting really) the ability to switch between the two would be very interesting.

Yeah, though the breasts can be a perspective thing and after Magna Carta even they may not be enough proof.

he/she looks either way to me to be honest; a male with some feminine traits, as Link's always looked, or a flat chested female. Not sure where all this overconfidence from people calling him/her a female comes from

I wouldn't say overconfidence, the way this character looks just seems to lean toward it being female.

I've looked at Link so much today, and I still see him as "male." I don't understand the whole "It's so OBVIOUSLY a girl!" Er, no. Not to me, anyways. Just looks like Link to me?

Why do people want it to be a girl?

It's constantly brought up these days, but what are concrete reasons that it would improve the game? Is it primarily for the sake of the medium seeming more inclusive?

I don't care either way if it's a female Link, Zelda, whatever, but I also never understand the desire to turn an established character into something they're not (Black James Bond, Gay Spider-Man, etc.)

Obviously if it's Zelda the previous sentence doesn't eactly apply, but the question stands.

I also don't see how blue eyed/blonde hair person is going to magically turn into Ganondorf by the end of the game or something.

You will have to show me the wider hips than shoulders. I don't see it.

Look at the seam:

Like I said, it could be a matter of EVERY angle we see of this character being off, but as far as THIS picture is concerned, this Link's hips are undeniably wider than the shoulders.

There IS something of a Ghibli female look to the character as shown in the avatar in the post right under your's... but the characters can be very androgynous there too so I'm not sure that's the greatest counter anyway.

So it's come to analyzing hip sizes now? :p

The only thing I notice from that picture is whoever designed Link has looked at some Nomura drawings. Multiple belts and buckles!

I mean, I do see SOME feminine qualities, but it's not so unusual. Link looks a bit younger than his Skyward Sword/Twilight Princess counterparts.

While I'm hoping it's either Zelda or Links sister Aryll, if I were to respond under the mindset it's a brand new female character my reasons for being excited would be:

-More female representation which is ALWAYS a positive

- Different approach to the storyline. It's now not the typical "male hero saves female princess"

- Changes up the formula. Why is it a female lead? what is the backstory to this character?

Even if the bottom one ends only being "it's just a female Link" it's still great to see such a huge franchise begin to star a female lead.

but I also never understand the desire to turn an established character into something they're not (Black James Bond, Gay Spider-Man, etc.)

Because it would be a nice, refreshing change?

I hardly see how it is as "controversial" as the examples you mention.

The art style was beautiful, the hints of open world puzzle solving tickled my The Witness sense, and a clearly female player character are all things that have me incredibly excited about this. But what the hell was up with that robot thing? Thats not Zelda.

Guys I think we are going get more info soon. This is the first zedla reveal in which we didn't get a lot of footage especially compared to ss and tp. Reggie also has said that it has been in development for a long time,

I thought after decades of JRPG haters bashing androgynous characters most people would've gotten the memo that Japan has a different take on male character designs.

On the topic of fem-Link. I don't like it simply because if there was a female main character I would like more specificity attached to it. P3P was a perfect example. Female characters in games should be more than regex-ing all mention of males and replacing it with female.

Yeah I definitely think that's contributing plenty of people posted that Ghibli Nausicaa (and Mononoke) vibe.

Guys, how the hell could it be Aryll? Her world in Wind Waker is an ocean! There's barely any land!

I don't think that people are saying that this is exactly the same Aryll, but a new Aryll. In the same sense that there are multiple Impas across the length of the series, or how Marin from Link's Awakening shows up as Malon in OoT who then appears again in Minish Cap. The series is really big at bringing back familiar characters in new incarnations.

Skyward Sword had a crap ton of tech and robots in one region.
