What a fantastic debut for Persona Q, and 13k bump for 3DS too! A new audience is born. :)

Now let's see if it has legs, probably not, but it should at least hit 250k LTD (SMT4: 184,811 / 255,057).
Interesting. Persona Q had almost exactly the same debut number as SMT4, only slightly higher.

I see that the 3DS had a bump, but there still must be an enormous audience overlap.

Ha, I'll be digging up the posts later where people disagreed with me on Mario Kart 8 not pushing Wii U past last year's YTD.
And it turns out I was being too generous myself!

Is that something to gloat about?

Sad that Mk8 isn't pushing console. Hopefully Hyrule Warriors does something, if not then we have to wait for Smash.

MK8's bump for the WiiU was pathetic. Pikmin did better. It paints a worrying picture if the baseline doesn't increase and the WiiU continues to descend back into sub 10k territory.

I don't even own a Wii U, but seeing the machine still below last year's YTD is kind of heartbreaking. It doesn't deserve that. The holiday season should make up for the poor first half of 2014.

It's hard to say what's going to happen with Etrian Odyssey, but it seems like the development team has been in the mood to try new things with the same engine - hence Millennium Girl and Persona Q. I'd like to see them go back to it, but I can understand a desire to keep from getting into a rut.

There is no reason why they should stop making EO games. PQ selling mor doesn't mean they should scrap the franchise.
It's basically the same game series. Persona Q allows them to continue making the EO games, but with a much more profitable skin on top.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.

There's no need to kill off the EO brand just because Persona is more successful, if it wasn't doing well enough it wouldn't have made it this far. They're already milking Persona pretty dry. The director of EO2, 3, and Untold (in other words, the usual EO director) wasn't the director of Persona Q so he's probably working on something.

That's kind of stupid, having two successful series is better than having just one in the long term. Reduces risks of franchise fatigue.

Damn, PS4 bump for Wolfenstein? They really just want anything to play.
That would only apply to excisting owners though. If a specific game makes someone buy a system, its not really because "they want anything to play", then its more because of one specific game :) But Wolfenstein didnt do much anyway. About 98% of all PS4 owners in Japan didnt buy the game the first week.

I think Persona Q doing well will help Etrian Odyssey more than Atlus wanting to kill it off.
I don't think they can pump out Persona Qs annually like they have with Etrian Odyssey, and Etrian Odyssey's always remained stable prior.

I only see growth for the franchise.

I hope so. I really want EO5, but these sales have me very pessimistic about the future.

I don't believe the creative teams making the games are primarily motivated by making what sells the most copies. EO games are inexpensive to make and I like to think they'll find the enthusiasm to develop another mainline title sooner or later.

PSV heading towards sub 10k in its "strongest" market. The launch of the PSV2000 revision and 1Q lineup seem to have only masked its actual baseline, it´s actually really similar to what happened last year some weeks after PSVs first pricecut. They likely won´t cancel the games in production but it´s very naive to think that Japanese publishers won´t take notice if there won´t be significant improvement.

Lol always lowballing Sony numbers when predicting, supercute.

600k-650k

tumblr_m2rbpcmoUU1qkun3a.gif

400k is lowballing? I was being honest but it seems Persona has truly become a big franchise in Japan now.

600-650k would be Tales territory (among the top selling of that series iirc). I don't know, that seems a massive jump. Wouldn't mind it surpassing expectations though :)

People still thinking that WiiU has a chance to outsell PS4 in Japan? It just got biggest game of its life that sold extra 20k consoles in two weeks. Imagine if PS4 would do as low numbers during FFXV launch week...
You know that there is still a 1,2 million difference between those two and that’s pretty big considering that there are zero games on the horizon and that won’t change for a while.

I don't think 1.2 million gap is enough when after Smash there is pretty much nothing on the horizon for WiiU. After Smash Nintendo has released all their heavy hitters on WiiU and it has non existent third party support. Not to mention that after this Mario kart bump I don't expect the Smash bump to be that big either (especially as it has 3DS version too).

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Games like Hyrule Warriors or X will do more for attracting new audiences then expected Nintendo games like Mario Kart I think.

I'm really happy about Persona Q selling so well, now announce EO5!

Persona Q replaces Etrian Odyssey, most likely.

I don't expect this at all, I expect this to help EO sell better. Cheap games with a really loyal fanbase.

I also don't think that making more Persona Qs would be that effective, this seems more like a one time thing to me.

lol yes that's what I'm hoping for

"wow I've been missing out on EO after all these years. My life has been a gigantic waste. It's time for me to buy all the released EO games and preorder EO5 ten times"

I don't know why Atlus would kill Etrian Odyssey. There's no guarantee that a Persona Q 2 would be as well received as the first. Some may have had their fill of a cutesy crossover, or find out that a straight dungeon crawler isn't for them. Some might want to stop playing Persona for a bit after the barrage of PQ, Ultimax, DAN and 5.

Not if E3 matters to Japan.

Games announcements very very rarely have any bearings on sales. So E3 won't change anything. Plus as far as Japan is concerned, there's nothing new Nintendo announced that would make the buying public suddenly decide the system is worth buying.

I hope so. I really want EO5, but these sales have me very pessimistic about the future.

That's the same weird mindset some people had back when NSMB sold a crazy amount of copies (they thought Nintendo would stop making 3D marios), a publisher doesn't suddenly decide to stop making a successful series because another one sold better. That would be incredibely short sighted.

So Fifa was bundled for free with the PS4 or something?

The spike there is interesting

Wii U baseline seems relatively unaffected by Mario Kart :\

Vita continuing to slide down

I'm not all that up to date on the gaming situation in Japan so I'm going to need some help understanding this. How exactly should Nintendo approach their next portable system to be successful in this market? Is Japan simply not interested in the software coming out for the current systems or is it the hardware itself - features, price etc?
The most important thing is that they should only sell it from October through February every year. They will never be part of "Japanese games market dying lol" discussions, maintaining a healthy image, inspiring consumers everywhere.

Is that something to gloat about?

Sad that Mk8 isn't pushing console. Hopefully Hyrule Warriors does something, if not then we have to wait for Smash.

I made a (sort of) correct prediction and I commented on it, is that a problem because it's about your favorite console doing poorly?

Mario Maker, especially with the NSMB art style option will be a big seller.

In addition, Kirby is a pretty popular franchise in Japan. Add to that smaller hits like Yoshi, Captain Toad, Zelda, etc.

They're sitting on Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem as well.

The outlook for the Wii U isn't as bleak as you're making it out to be. As far as announced games go the Wii U has a stronger selling upcoming lineup than PS4 in Japan.

With how well the Wii U does in the holiday season I fully expect the gap to be more like 1,5 million by years end.

Disappointing Q sales, Expected 400k.

A little high, but I'm right there with you in being disappointed especially considering the nature of the game and the install base. It should have crushed Persona 4 Golden's opening by like 2-3x. Also, the Wii U getting the blue shell mollywhop. MK8 is doing great, but the Wii U still suffers. Let's not even get started on Sony's systems. Sad all around.

Are you sure about that?

Do you reackon Hyrule Warriors will give a bigger bump?

I am not sure about that, but i think that these games cater to audiences that arent already owning a WiiU. There are probably a bunch of gamers who already bought the WiiU because they knew MK, Smash, 3D World and Co. will be there anyway....

I agree that WiiU has better 2014 line up than PS4 (even PSP probably has lol) but after that you just can't keep console alive with Kirbys and Zeldas in Japan when there seems to be rather huge overlap between customers of various Nintendo games like the non existent Mario Kart boost showed us. Really if biggest brand and game of the console gives you meager 20k boost within two weeks you really expect Kirby and Zelda to bump hardware? Next year (and after that) there are just too many months without nothing and then some medium seller like Kirby (that mostly sells to existing audience). Sure they could come up with some Breakthrough title(s) but the chances are against that. WiiU really is like GameCube. It also had all popular Nintendo games and it sold barely 4 million. Factor the shrinking console market and WiiU will not sell even that.

Also I don't know how many more stories the Persona team wants to make with the P3/P4 cast.

I'm sure once P5 comes out they'll think about a PQ2.

P4G opened @ 137k (MC)/152k (famitsu). That 400k that you claim is "a little high" would fit in nicely in that 2-3x range.

As for nature of the game: yeah it is a spinoff of the main series based on another series where sales cap off at 150k LTD.

Your reasoning is all over the place.
