Interesting list to say to the least.

Dave Ramsey is a financial coach who is pretty anti debt. I used his debt snowball methods to get out of serious CC and Student loan debt. He comes from an unapologetic Evangelical Christian angle, which may turn some people off, but his plan for financial fitness is applicable to anyone, with some alterations.

He calls them the Baby Steps found here. http://www.daveramsey.com/new/baby-steps/

I don't agree with his anti CC stance for example, since I pay off my balance every month.

Being smart and making money is about breaking through to the next level, and watching reality tv sure isn't helping you become a better person. Some of this makes a lot of sense, and not just in terms of rich vs poor.

Nothing to do with being a better person when watching reality TV is a symptom rather than a cause.

Has to be one of the worst lists I've ever seen.

"8. 80% of wealthy make Happy Birthday calls vs. 11% of poor."

Fuck that's what we're doing wrong.

Could it be because eating healthy requires more money to afford it, and possibly these folks have chefs preparing meals for them?

Also, when he says rich/wealthy/poor what are the yearly incomes he's referring to?

EDIT: Also, list can be summed up 75% of intelligent people do X, while 25% of non-intelligent folks do X.

Not hating on the wealthy, but they are able to do a lot more things because of the free time they have; especially the mothers of wealthy dudes who stay at home.

having been in the active lifestyle industry, most of the clients were stay at home moms who were wealthy. They were pretty much the only ones who had time to come in for yoga, spin classes and do all kinds of training to do triathlons.

I agree that its not just wealthy people who do these activities, but there is a reason the percentage difference is so huge.

Having time to do a lot of things you always wanted to do creates a healthy cycle. When yo are poor and barely have time to do this, you get stuck in an opposite vicious cycle.

Again, not trying to make excuses and diss the rich, but this is how I see it.

The eating healthier part is something I have transitioned into, and right away noticed how much more expensive it was.

Dave Ramsey got me out of about $23000 of debt. I don't line up with his dogma and he addresses that, but he gave a common sense approach to debt management and I followed it. It worked. It's common sense. Just nice to have it in a book.

Networking 5 hours a week seems tough if you're working and have kids.

I'm guessing these may be salesmen or other careers where networking is built into the job?

That's a possibility for some; however, buying healthy items at the grocery store really isn't that expensive. You could have healthy meals for days with 10 items or less.

It's MORE expensive and more time consuming, which is a bigger burden on someone that's poor. That's all that needs to be said.

The list isn't even Dave Ramsay's. He took it from Tom Corley and says as much at the top of the list.

I couldn't find any listing of the survey method on either site, and it's probably more bullshit self help propaganda that aims to take money from the non-birthday-calling poor by promising them a financial light at the end of the tunnel.

They're both snake oil salesmen. Fuck them. Don't buy their shitty books, but if you do make sure you listen to it on audiobook on your morning commute so you don't act like a filthy poor.

Basically. I mean, some of this is general "yeah, successful people can attribute some of their success to this", but a lot of these are just "isn't life great when you aren't working a soul crushing job at WalMart that gets you home at 9pm with enough food for frozen dinners?"

It's five hours a month.

edit: Also, networking can be done during work hours too...

Wow, seriously. Talk about missing the point.

These are things the rich mostly do because they're rich, not things the rich did to get rich.

Poorer people struggle with things like healthy eating and exercise because of their circumstances.

Yeah. I work from 7:00 am until 5:00 to 6:00 pm at night. I put my daughter to bed and then have dinner, go for a swim, read/play agame and go to bed by 10:00. I'm up at 5:45am to get to work by 7:00 am.

I don't get what they do from 4/5 until 7/8.

That's not that ridiculous. Work starts at 9, wake up at 6? I wake up at 7, and its not outlandish to imagine waking up an hour earlier

I would also have to say that waking up earlier period also creates good habits for the rest of the day, especially with forming good sleep habits. And this is coming from me, who struggles to wake up every morning and has terrible sleep habits.

edit: A few of my friends wake up early so they can go to the gym before work.

Best way to put it is this:

You can buy a $3 powdered soup bag that creates a cheddar potato soup with 8 cups of water. Or you can buy the fresh potatoes, cheese, cream, and make it yourself. The "poor" are going to choose the $3 option as the fresh option will be more expensive in the end. They make the choice in the grocery aisle, not at home.

So according to the list, it's not a matter of can you have healthy meals on ten items, it's being able to know how to cook those meals, which since poor folks can't listen to audiobooks on their commutes to work or read at all, won't be able to know how.

My job begins at nine and I have to commute in, therefore I get up at seven (or thereabouts). Why would I want to get up at six? Maybe I could fit in an hour of Mario Kart? I dunno.

A lot of people will take this as a list of reasons why poor people are poor and stay that way. That's a very unpleasant thought.

Honest questions - where does he provide statistical proof of his claims? How does he define wealthy and poor? What data sources did he use to draw these conclusions? What were the sample sizes of the studies he used? Are these findings US-only? Is he not conflating correlation with causation? Has he considered that other contextual (ie demographic) factors may be more reliable indicators of success than personal habits?

I'm not trying to sound smarmy, but I'm quite sceptical of people using unsourced statistics to sell their self-help books. I can't believe a lot of these statistics and I can't believe they would really matter anyway.

Three hours... Wtf!

3 hours seem like a lot. I usually wake up 2 hours before work to make sure I can have breakfast and get ready for work. I suppose if they have family and other obligations than that extra hour would make sense.

Well, the producers behind the show are BECOMING wealthy, so I guess it does help some other wealthy person.

I think it's a great list.

Great at showing the abundance of free time, carefree living, existing wealth, opportunity privileges and top-level education (that most can't afford nor have access to) that leads the rich to develop good habits and easily do what's seemingly impossible for others. There are obvious exceptions, but your average wealthy person isn't especially gifted, intelligent or extra-focused compared to his poor counterpart. I mean they are generally smarter and more determined in many cases, but not naturally so and definitely not because they pulled up on their bootstraps harder than everyone else.

I really like The Total Money Makeover. That's the only book I've read from him as the others seem like repackaging of the same content--something common with money advice books. Suze Orman does the same thing. Same book released every 3 years with a new spin.
