Oh new page, I'll repost in case my edit is missed

From the OP

All of the original Halo 2 maps are playable, including Halo 2 Vista and DLC maps.

In addition to the old maps, six Halo 2 maps are being remastered on a "newish" Xbox One engine that "feels like a modern take on Halo 2". These maps allow Forge editing

Completely remastered Halo 2 Campaign including "Anniversary graphics", music, and sound effects, as well as Story Terminals.

So no new graphics for H2MP (and by extension HCEMP) by the sounds of it. Guess that's on me for making assumptions, I could barely believe they'd remaster ~100 (minus H3/4) maps.

Slightly new pic of Johnson. Not sure where it originally came from but I found it on a different forum.

That's some incredible CGI work.

My attempt at laying it out, please read the full post and notes
and OP
and internalize before replying
:

Strictly talking about Competitive Multiplayer (Matchmaking and Custom Games only), there are 5 engines.

The first 4 are visually unchanged from their originals in nearly every respect, think of it as playing the same in-game multiplayer as they were originally released (likely with whatever patches done in their lifespans). So the environments, models, audio, etc are all the same as original games, albeit in 1080p60

These are:
Halo CE
Halo 2
Halo 3
Halo 4
Every map ever released for the above games (not including Halo CE's Anniversary variants, as those were created as a map pack for Halo Reach, which isn't part of the MC Collection), including every DLC, and the 8 that were released exclusively on Halo PC and Halo 2 PC (except the Example map) will be run in their respective engines above. This includes the original versions of the 6 remade Halo 2 maps discussed below.
Speculation: In the case of the engine for Halo CE MP, it is probably based on bits of the PC version, as well. Possibly true for Halo 2's MP engine, too, but this is not confirmed.

The 5th engine is new, and runs only the 6 Halo 2 Anniversary map variants, in 1080p60. This means all new graphics, models, sounds, etc :
Halo 2 Anniversary Multiplayer
It is very similar in gameplay to Halo 2, but it isn't the Halo 2 engine, rather a "mashup" of past code, combined with new code. Though there isn't anything distinguishing between the two Halo 2 MP engines in the current Master Menu, think of this as a new game, a modern-built version of Halo 2 multiplayer for those 6 maps. These Anniversary maps are re-envisioned variants of their respective maps, and may have minor or major differences to their counterparts.
Halo 2 Forge is only available for this engine, and the 6 maps included

-----

Strictly talking about Campaign, there would be 4 engines, all running at 1080p60.:

Halo CE (with a optional anniversary graphical "layer", optional redone music and sounds, terminals)
Halo 2 (with a optional anniversary graphical "layer", optional redone music and sounds, toggle-able new CG cutscenes, terminals)
Halo 3 (no changes)
Halo 4 (no changes)

Not getting into game-specific Forge, Theatre Mode, File Shares, Progression or Ranks, etc. Refer to the OP for that, it touches on much of it.

--

NOTES:

Xbox One Game DVR, platform-level parties and chat, platform-level friend list and invites, etc, and Twitch Livestreaming will likely work for all of the above (ie: the entire game).

Everything discussed in this post will be accessed via the new Master Menu UI, NOT the original UIs that were in each respective game, as those no longer exist.
At least outside of gameplay, it is unclear on if the Master Menu replaces the Pause Menus in the game you are actively playing at the time.
So the original, out-of-game UIs for Campaigns, Matchmaking Rosters, Customs, Friends Lists, Halo 2 clan features, Skull toggles, File Shares, Theatres, Forge, etc. from all the old games are no longer there. Many of those features do exist, just not the old UIs. This is a feat unto itself, as the in-game content, and every supported classic feature and option from every included game, as well as all the new features, playlists, and options (and extra content like the halo 5 beta, digital series, etc) now has to be "linked" into the new Master Menu UI. I think this is where people are getting hung up. You don't just "boot" into a straight, 100%, full 1080p60 port of the previous games from the main menu of the MC Collection as if you were "digitally swapping" between discs. There's more to it than that. There is also a "high level" Options and Career menu accessible here by pressing Start
The 3 lines button
, though it is unclear what this entails.

My main source for the information in this post is from this video, starting at around 6:09.
Master Menu not final. Subject to change before release.
Other minor sources are from various interviews, and posts by 343 members around GAF and Twitter.

As happy as I am with all of this amazing content (literally made me shout "YES!!!!" when watching E3 live, much to the bemusement of my girlfriend) I can't help but want all of Halo 2's Multiplayer to also have that graphical overlay as the campaign has...but it's a tiny tiny gripe in a sea of awesome.

It's just not good enough 343! ;)

They are only remastering 6 of the Halo 2 maps. They are not remastering any of the Halo 1, Halo 3, or Halo 4 maps. Those are straight ports.

Halo 1's campaign will feature the Halo CE:A graphical remaster layer that can be turned on and off with the press of a button, as will Halo 2's campaign. Halo 3 and 4's campaigns will not be remastered in any way. (All of this of course is notwithstanding that they've all been 'turned up' to 1080p/60fps, but none of the actual textures or polygon models are changed, at all).

The only campaign being remade is Halo 2's (remastered with the graphical overlay like CE:A).

The ONLY multiplayer maps being 'remade' are the 6 Halo 2 ones. Those will be (I believe) in ADDITION to the actual 6 original maps.

The rest of the multiplayer maps (Halo 1, Halo 2's other than those 6, Halo 3, and Halo 4) will all be completely untouched other than at 1080p/60fps.

I don't get how people don't understand this yet. Not you personally, just people in general. Still seeing these questions in the latest pages, like people don't even comprehend the OP. Still though, this is so awesome..... so, so awesome.

Every other anniversary addition or game collection re-release will be measured against the MCC yardstick. And as we all know, the MCC has a big yardstick.

For what I understand we have this:

Campaigns:

H1CE - remastered (2011)
H2 - remastered (2014)
H3 - untouched (2007)
H4 - untouched (2012)

MultiPlayer:

H1CE - untouched (2001)
H2 - untouched (2004) & remastered 6 maps and newer engine (2014)
H3 - untouched (2007)
H4 - untouched (2012)

1080p 60fps for all as well.

Seems like the same questions are here around every few pages.

  • Only the Halo 2 Campaign and 6 MP Maps get the Anniversary Treadment
  • Only the Halo 2 Cutscenes will be remastered in CGI by the awesome Blur Studios
  • You can play the 6 H2A Maps in the new engine or the original Version of these Maps in the old engine. These are complety seperate maps, so you cant switch between them while playing.
  • Forge in H2 only works for the 6 Anniversary Maps
  • Every of the 4 games are 1080p, 60fps
  • HCEA and Halo 4 are getting better lightning, shadows and reflexions according to Xbox Wire
  • Without ODST and Reach the MC Collection will not include any Firefight at all
  • No additional features like customizable characters are included, besides the way it was implemented in the original games (e.g. switching colors + emblems in H2)

  • Every of the 4 games are 1080p, 60fps

About that...

Eurogamer said:
Crucially, all four games run at 60 frames per second. But 343 still isn't sure if it'll get all four games to output at 1080p resolution. It's looking good for Halo 1, 3 and 4, but Halo 2 is the sticking point, which I find slightly bizarre.

"We're heading for 1080p," Ries says. "That's what we want to do, but I can't commit to that right now.

"Some of the levels in Halo 4 are already running at 1080p. I'm confident some of the games will get there. I'm not confident in all of them."

"The only open question right now is Halo 2 Anniversary mode," O'Connor adds, "because we have the two frame buffers, and we're doing Xbox One level of graphics. The idea is we try and get it to 1080p but we may have to sacrifice the resolution on that to have that mode. Our target is to get to 1080p."

Not a big deal. Pixel count won't matter much when I'm playing Halo 2 online again

It won't, for sure. I'm not complaining. Replaying Halo 3 at 1080p 60fps is all I need. I never cared too much for Halo 2's campaign. I've only finished it twice. It's also the only Halo game I haven't finished in legendary. It's just boring. Great game from a purely narrative standpoint; most disappointing Halo campaign from a gameplay perspective.

My man.

Halo 3 was the reason I bought a 360 in the first place, cannot wait to revisit that beautiful game.

Reach isn't in the package thank god. The originals play perfectly.

Well... they could just take those new meshes they made for Halo CE A and do the same thing they are doing with the 6 updated maps for Halo 2 CE.

I guess it's a matter of time... but still, a shame that they couldn't do that. It's an incredible package but I'm sure the non-updated maps from Halo 1/2 will look like garbage and most people probably will want to stay away from them.

For the sake of completeness, I kinda hope for ODST and Reach as expansion DLC. I guess I can get over not having Firefight, but it had better return in H5 and not the half-ass-feeling Spartan Ops from H4 which doesn't even get interesting until much later into the first set of missions before becoming by-the-numbers feeling again. Still, amazing value for having all of the MP maps included across the mainline games.

I wonder if it'll be possible to remake some classic halo 1 and halo 3 maps and add them to halo 2 anni multiplayer. That would be cool.

Isn't the MCC Forge based in the new engine running those updated H2 maps? Seems pretty likely that fans will do it if the developers don't.

You'll have two "Halo 2" Mp experiences in MCC.

Halo 2 Anniversary - The visually remastered maps, character, and gun models that will be played on a modified modern engine with Halo 2-like mechanics.

Halo 2 Original MP - MP as it was when it was out on the original Xbox. No character models, maps, gun models, or gameplay mechanics are changed. Only difference is that it will be boosted up to 1080p and the framerate will be boosted to 60 FPS.

So Halo 2 like mechanics won't be exactly like H2? So, best to play regular Halo 2 for true experience?

I'm guessing I'm not the only one who would prefer 1080p60 Halo 2 campaign with 1+ seconds to change between OG and Anniversary, as opposed to instant change and < 1080p.

Its a different engine, so it surely be close to H2, but it can never be the real H2.

Think we have to wait if the space in the 6 anniversary maps will be big enough to build other remakes.

I thought that notions of map space were essentially arbitrary when you could freely scale every element of the map in Forge allowing you to fit everything you want, within reason and past precedent for the scale of official Halo maps? Or am I assuming too much about the new Forge?

Day 1 for me.

Insane value - currently having a blast running through Halo CE Anniversary on 360!

I'm not even much into the multi - I actually think Halo 2 was the worst campaign of the four, but it was still great.

Really stoked for this bad boy.

Now I just need

The Bioshock Trilogy
The Gears Collection
The Dead Space Collection
The Mass Effect Collection

on the One and I could get rid of my 360!!

Please tell me this is how classic mode will look in this!!!

Yeah, possibly even better. Work in progress and all.

I hope they can at least throw on some added AA.

I think Frankie already mentioned that they are working on extra AA.

So if I'm reading these posts correctly, regarding the 6 maps that are remastered.. There's no way to play the original version of them online?

There probably will be. Possibly in different playlists.

BeforeU

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
When can we expect more info now? Cant wait to see Halo 3 and 4 on full HD. Thats gonna look awesome.

Waiting for hopefully a announcement for a collector's edition before i pre-order but getting this Day 1. Easily the most value i have seen in a collection since Orange Box/Burnout.
