EG: How FAR CRY 4 co-op works if you don't have the game (PS4 exclusive feature)

Here's how Far Cry 4 co-op works if you don't have the game.
Ubisoft explains the PS4-exclusive feature.

Far Cry 4's co-op is available to people who don't own Far Cry 4. How is this possible, you ask? It starts with a client.

Like the 3DS's download play, PS4 users without Far Cry 4 will be able to download a separate app that allows them to be invited into their friends' Far Cry 4 games.

It's going to be a colossal app, since it will contain all of the game's content sans its story-based missions - which are the only content available exclusively in single-player.

Hm, I'm sure there will be some further restrictions on this like playtime/session time/no savestate or something similair. They're basically offering the whole game's content for free.

Fucking amazing. We really have to support this by buying the game. It will be amazing if this sets the standard for other coop games.

I don't get why they'd do it. There will be so many lost sales because of this. I know plenty of people that buy a game like this just to play co-op with their buddies.

This actually happened a bit during the PSP days. I recall you could play GTA multiplayer with just one UMD.

Adam Boyes explained during the show at Giant Bomb that there will be 10 invites and each invite lasts for a limited time. And obviously not story missions.

Please generalise this.

I'll buy the game for this feature. I probably wouldn't have otherwise, neither would my friends.

It could be they've received sufficient compensation from Sony or they've done sufficient research that giving friends a taste of the game through coop could drive sales or a combination of both.

This is WAY better than I imagined. I figured it would be some non-interactive features for people on Ustream or something.

Sony needs to get on this shit and put it in every game that could support it.

Everyone knows that co-op play is pretty much always a ton of fun, this could be 10 times as effective in selling a game than a standalone demo would.

That makes way more sense. More of a timed demo version for your friends, then.

This is freaking awesome.

I'm thinking if you're the "not-owner player" then you will not have any progress "saved to your world", since you wont have a "world". So it's still pretty much escorting your friend.

it's like drop in / drop out split-screen. you don't need a second license for that either, since you're just joining someone else's game.

People didn't buy far cry 3 for the multiplayer.

Sales of far cry 4 will continue to.be driven by people buying a single player shooter, but this feature differentiates their product so it is win win.

Yeah there are a few things to be explained yet about this. How long does an invite last for? and can you invite the same person 10 times?

But does sound like a great feature and would be a great way to get a taste of the game.

I think he also said it's a chunk of the map too.

Edit: it's in this video, at about 1:38:00 in.

Full quote:
... like Far Cry, with that co-op mode, you know, where you get to invite a friend ... [unintelligible] ... you download a chunk, you download like a piece, a chunk, a trial chunk; so when you get the game you get 10 invites, right, and you send an invite to one of your friends, they then download the chunk and they can play with you for a limited amount of time.

...

No, no [you can't beat the entire game], and when you kick into co-op mode, it turns the story mode off, so you just mess around, even in the full game.

Certainly less generous than what was initially suggested, but it's a rather novel approach to providing a demo without needing to cut one out and stitch up loose ends.

So I guess it's a bit more of a trial version? Similar to what blizzard often does, just focused on coop

I'm also pretty sure there will be a message when you exit, something like "Attention! Since you're playing free co-op version, your progress will not be saved. Buy full game here <PSN store link>"

Huh.... That's not as complicated as I thought it would be. Kind of weak that a feature like this is exclusive.

Maybe microsoft had restrictions that prevented it, or maybe it only exist because of sony. Sony just seem more open to this type of stuff.

A good viral approach to advertising the full game to friends while bringing back free multiplayer spawn installations/clients. Too bad it's exclusive to one platform, but it's a good idea for most multiplayer games, just as it once was in the past.

I hope this actually spurs on developers to include more co-op.

The future is already looking bright, but we could use a good co-op revival right about now.

(baseless speculation)

It seems like this feature was not exclusive but available to both platforms at first, but MS probably did not like the idea.

Pretty much what I assumed, and a damn awesome feature, the implementation could be a bit more generous though. Harks back to the old pc licenses that let people play mp without the disc but not sp. Hopefully they are generous with time, otherwise you may as well just have a demo.

You might be more likely to buy the game because you know you can play co-op with your friend that isn't planning to buy the game. So it improves the value of the game to you.

Your friend might then change his mind after playing with you, and want to play the full game. If Sony/Activision are smart, they'll make it super easy to buy/unlock the full game from within the 'download play' client.
