NPD Sales Results for May 2014 [Up1: Wii U Hardware]

there's also another article which hints that June NPDs will be competitive for Wii U compared to PS4 and X1. this article was posted on June 11 so he is probably pleased with the hardware numbers so far for June

"Q: Will you ever outsell [PS4/X1] on a monthly basis?

A: You know, it’s going to be very interesting to see the NPD data [on U.S. sales] for June."

http://blogs.seattletimes.com/brier...o-boss-on-wii-u-beating-xbox-and-playstation/

What a weird question to ask. Before that he asks "Will the Wii U ever outsell the Xbox One or PlayStation 4?"

lol.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say but what it should mean is if on average Wii U sold 15k per week for the month of May, then in June for the first week it sold 60k on its own.

And that's just assuming if the Wii U sold 15k it's last week in May, which it most likely didn't since a majority of May sales should've happened at the tail end of the month.

All I'm saying is that the effect of MK8 sales on hardware will be seen during June more than they were seen during May. That is of course saying Reggie was correct on the amount of Wii U's sold and he wasn't misquoted or anything.

I've never denied that MK8 wouldn't have an effect, I think Nintendo's first party efforts are powerful enough that pretty much all of them (at least the big name stuff like Mario and Zelda) will cause a bump, I wonder what the sustainability is though. That is where I have doubts. If sales quadruple in June and then normalize in July and August and until Smasn Bros, does that really mean anything for the long term prospects?

Consider too that the family market is not buying consoles in May. When the holidays roll around having that Mario Kart bundle on shelves will be important to system sales.

I don't know why any family with kids who might have considered the WiiU and now has kids that are interested because of Mario Kart would buy it in May vs waiting for it as a christmas gift. I think it'll do quite well later in the year too along with Smash Bros.

NPD is only for USA

which would be a big chunk of those console sales.

I'm leaving it up to someone with more info and more sales calculation experience to draw the relevant US info out of it. I think the numbers from Japan are probably out there already.

edit: 450,000 is the US in 3 days
Q: How many copies of “Mario Kart 8” have you sold?

A: The first three days we sold 450,000 units in the United States. That has had a 4x lift on our hardware sales.
http://blogs.seattletimes.com/brierdudley/2014/06/11/e3-nintendo-boss-on-wii-u-beating-xbox-and-playstation/

If the 18% attach rate applied to US sales as well as worldwide, that would mean
2.347 million Wii U (source )
2347000 * .18 = 422,460 sales of Mario Kart 8 in the US were to previous Wii U owners
450,000 - 422,460 = 27,540 sales of Mario Kart 8 in the US were to new Wii U owners in 3 days

As somebody already posted, Polygon had an article with Nintendo saying Wii U sales quadrupled in the week after it was released. Who knows if it extended throughout the month.

I am very curious too.
Just TODAY I have had three more friends post on FB about getting a WiiU.
Either I personally know everyone who picked up a WiiU in that last week or its going to get a decent bump next week. I really want to know what this real world buzz translates to.

Yeah, it looks like "Software sales" are up 90% YTD, while "Hardware sales" are up 85% YOY.

88.8k sold then if MOM?

Yes sorry it's YOY increase from May 2013. My mistake

Probably closer that the market Amazon Germany represents on the US retail market...

Ah my mistake then. I would be curious to know Amazon's marketshare in Germany although I'm certain it's much less.

In the US though Amazon has a signficant portion of US retail even if it is less than 10% and shouldn't be so easily dismissed

I saw 2 people buying Wii U on the local store near my house the other day, but the next day a total of 4 people bought a Wii U!

Damn I think Wii U numbers will rise a 500% in this month.

There is value in statistical inference from within-product, within-retailer time series data like Amazon publishes.

I just realized that Mario Kart 8 and the Wii U bump only take into account the two days MK8 was released for. Wow.

These Amazon statistical predictions have been more wrong in the past than right, I remember that month were Xbone was supossed to surpass PS4, because is was the 1# selling product on Amazon...

Sorry, I meant they didn't give up on the PS3. They continued to come out with awesome games despite the horrible first two years (i.e. GBA vs PS3 NPD battles) and eventually overcame their stigma.

But yeah, Sony totally gave up on the Vita.

Don't have to say sorry. I was the one who misread your post. I read "much like" as "unlike", my mistake.

I think it's really important that Nintendo push holiday sunday insert flyer advertising at retail for holidays and get some aggressive bundles that give a lot of value at $250 or $300 vs the $400 next gen options that don't offer any games and have expensive subscription services.

I think they are in a good position to sell a lot of software this holiday and with the right prices/bundles be competitive with XB1 and be a more attractive family alternative as a holiday gift.

yeah it was

I just feel like Reggie would have deflected a bit more if he didn't know something that we don't. he's certainly capable of better PR spin than "wait for the June NPDs"

I'm not expecting massive numbers next month or anything I just find his response interesting

Waiting on the MS spin, or have I missed it?
They are running a little late, I mean they DID announce like 'we are dropping kinnect' they shouldn't be shocked by the numbers they got.

But if Microsoft does not release the numbers, how do we know Sony won this month?

Amazon data was almost always discarded in sales threads until the last month or so. I'm not sure what changed, or why. Not sure I dig it though.

I'm unconcerned with how faulty some people's logic is; You can make terrible inference with fantastic data.

My point is that it's a valuable source of information, not that all inference taken from it is good.

It has been and will continue to be interpreted incorrectly, since it not only does not give actual numbers, but also has a fluid background algorithm that actually generates the rankings with lag.
But that's not the point. The point is that the within-product, within-retailer time series variation that the Amazon rankings give us can be valuable for some statistical inference.

Are you seriously comparing one store to Amazons best seller list? It's certaibly not perfect but for Hardware it hasn't been wrong this gen. Every time the PS4 is on top, it wins NPD. In Dec, the X1 won which was also reflected in Amazons list

We'll have to see how big a deal it is when LBP 3 comes out and see if it sells more on the PS3 over the PS4.

As of April 2014 NPD....nope.

Every single month GameCube beat Wii U...in most months by quite a significant amount.

Wii U LTD as of April 2014 - 2.35 million

GameCube LTD as of April 2003 - 4.01 million

That's always disheartening to see but I guess dems the brakes :\

The GameCube also had its evergreen titles out sooner than the Wii U.

Melee launched a month after the console was out.

The only month the Xbox One has beat the PS4 on Amazon is December; which happens to be the only month the Xbox One outsold the PS4. The November rankings is bugged due to the changes with Amazon listing the PS4 as an launch edition.

Perhaps 2014 games like Hyrule Warriors, Wii Sports Club, Captain Toad, Bayonetta 2 (and 1), Sonic Boom, Watch Dogs and Smash Bros could help to keep momentum?

I'm only expecting Smash to do anything big for the console.

The others will do more to sate existing owners than drive new sales IMO.

Still no PS4 numbers?

Sony hasn't been specific on numbers since PS4 launch. It's not surprising that they're content with the narrative being "we're number 1" vs "we're number 1 by X units" because it's really not a huge drastic difference every month. It looks bigger when those small victories accumulate and you're 1 million ahead, etc.

Right but usually there are percentages leaked so the numbers can be guessed from that.

What's your take on Reggie's statement about the 400% in weekly sales? Does he refer to the first week of June? Does he make some kind of strange week (Friday to Thursday) from launch? Because a 48k week in June wouldn't be that bad.

It might be work for the biggest seller each month, but I don't think is really that useful to track small variations in the 20-40 positions....
