At this point, it's kind of like last gen never even happened. Sony is happily sitting on top of the mountain while MS and Nintendo sit in the valley with stunned looks on their faces battling for the bronze.

I'm pretty sure that Xbox "Next chapter of new generation" statement to be referring to the cheaper, Kinect-less SKU.

Call me a brony ONE more time I swear to god...

Dec. 2005 - 281,000
Jan. 2006 - 249,000
Feb. 2006 - 161,000
Mar. 2006 - 192,000
Apr. 2006 - 295,000
May 2006 - 221,000

Cumulative: 1.73 million through May 2006

Xbox One sales:

Nov. 2013 - 909,000
Dec. 2013 - 908,000
Jan. 2014 - 141,000
Feb. 2014 - 258,000
Mar. 2014 - 311,000
Apr. 2014 - 115,000
May 2014 - ???

Cumulative: 2.64 million through April 2014

Xbox One > Xbox 360 doesn't really mean anything. It's a non-statement.

Xbox 360 had ridiculous supply issues which plagued it all throughout its early months.

It's embarrassing to even have to compare it to the early days of the 360. The 360 didn;t pick up pace for a while and came off the back of a console which sold around 22/23 million worldwide. Xbox is now a huge, established brand and the 360 was one of the highest selling consoles in the history of the country. XB1 should be absolutely wiping the floor with the 360.

I don't know, Sony recently hiked it's prices in Canada where the PS4 is now at $449 and the kinectless Xbox One is at $399.

Then, you have the Master Chief Collection out soon which will move consoles. I think th gap will actually narrow quite a bit this year, at least in North America.

So do we think that means PS4 software LTD has finally surprised XB1 LTD or what? They always loved to tout that about

With PS4 beating the xbone for every multiplat this month (along with The Show charting high), definitely seems like a possibility.

Absolutely nothing.

Which is telling when that apparently beats the alternative of even hinting at sales.

What is there to hint at? Nobody (NOBODY) is going to say "2nd place", "3rd place", etc. There isn't much to say beyond "we're doing better than we were with the 360" even if they're just one unit behind the PS4 (they're not). People are reading waaaaaay too much into that.

Indeed. GCN levels are a low bar, truthfully. Sony didn't ever give up during the PS3's early period, caught up and essentially tied (beat?) Microsoft in the previous generation, and they're beating the brakes off of Microsoft now because of it. If console cycles prove anything, they prove that their extremely unpredictable. Fads, wild swings in popularity, and changes in fortunes are to be expected. This is a marathon, not a sprint. The worst thing Nintendo can do now is give up on Wii U.

PS3 had a very clear and identifiable problem: Price.

Yeah, it had other problems, but that was precisely the main one. The console was still attractive and resolving that, along better software after the awful first months, helped a lot.

Wii U problem, is a problem beyond price and software. It also has a very big problem that PS3 didn't have: third party support is non-existent, even during the darker days of PS3, third parties were still on board.

The situation is not comparable at all. Wii U is a very dire situation even after launching most of the bigger Nintendo IP's. Also Nintendo is basically alone, so maintaining the momentum is quite hard, and they clearly aren't doing a proper job.

Only retail... no digital.

no, retail only. It's written in the first post guys.

It's retail sales only for NPD so boxed copies. Digital copies which make up the majority of PC sales aren't counted and thus NPD isn't a good means to measure PC sales of games

Thanks guys. I was wondering that. Seems like with digital sales counted, PC could easily be jostling for first in a lot of areas of software sales. I don't even really know anyone who still buys PC retail releases.

The last time I was told a 10 year old game was going to move hardware, it was Wind Waker.

Old game collections are neat, but they aren't system sellers.

No, it was supply issues. Launch was a total sellout, then when Oblivion, Fight Night, GRAW, and Dead or Alive 4 all hit that spring the demand was off the charts. I worked retail at that time and people were always trying to get units. It wasn't until august or so that it really became easy to find 360s at retail.

They were selling what they were sending to stores for a good long time.

yeah.

That's 2 weeks prior vs follow launch, not month-over-month like many people seem to be assuming.

and he says it's selling 4 times the daily rate post launch than in the 2 weeks prior to launch.

That is very specific.

Here's the article the quote was pulled from
http://venturebeat.com/2014/06/13/reggie-fils-aime-talks-about-e3-industry-change-and-what-nintendo-is-doing-for-a-comeback-interview/

Ah thanks for finding that...

"In the two weeks prior to the launch, versus what we've seen now following the launch, we're selling at a daily rate four times higher than where we were before."

So that would mean the daily sales b/w 5/30 to E3 (let's say 6/12?) were 4 times the amount of the daily sales from 5/17-5/29 right?

Nintendo needs to fire their PR team. Where is their "Wii U is off to the hottest start in consoles with a capital U in the name history"???

Sorry, I missed a lot of the tread, but aren´t the Wii U sales like 110k on the US on May?

Is the 60k figure an official number or is based on an unnoficial calculation?

It means sales rose by 300%. Say sales were 100k week 1 and 400k week 2. The sales have been multiplied by four, but it's only a 300% increase in terms of percentage since you already have a base 100% to work with.

I know, I was just writing it down like this to point the obvious confusion. It was clarified meanwhile, he thought I was talking about 400% increase (so 5x) and I wasn't.

Anyhow I'm more curious what this 4x means in units sold.

Not at 60K sales for an entire month when one of their best selling software titles released.

So you already know that Wii u sold 60k in June? Cool.

Xbone sales being terrible in May shouldn't surprise anyone seeing as how everyone already knew the price would be cut in June. The real battle starts with June's numbers. X1 should win June or something is terribly, horribly wrong.

I bet that if we go back to 2007 threads we can find almost the same comment about the PS3.

Honestly, I can't imagine Canada or the Master Chief Collection really moving the needle. I'd imagine most people hyped about the MCC already have an Xbone. I can't picture a casual consumer running out to pick up a $400 device for a collection of games they already own.

While I'm quite excited for the Halo collection... I just don't see it.

Destiny marketed in eyes of consumer as a ps4 exclusive with a huge marketing budget, disagrees .

If they lose next month, Im not sure what they are going to do. They can't drop the price again. It would look terrible for them. Its more than a year away before their real system seller arrives. Halo 5. And the next one is Gears 4 which would arrive in 2016 or 2017.

I think it's possible. Like I guessed earlier, I think they would only stop giving NPD PR if there was nothing left positive to say which means 1) hardware is outsold on a "console family" basis; and 2) software is also outsold.

So I think it's possible that for this month 360+Xbone was also outsold by PS3+PS4 or what is more likely outsold by PS4 alone.

Not surprising given the price cut announcement. We'll know whether it's really bad if June numbers don't pick back up. We'll know that the console is dead when they have to announce "the XBox One outsold the white PS4"

Ah I see then. Never mind then. Confusion all around!

Hopefully it means good sales for Wii U. Got several family members asking about the Wii U for the first time with Mario Kart. A couple of them have asked me to tell them the next time there's a good deal on so they can get it

When we consider that MK8 was released at May 30, Wii U's 80%+ increase could be good sign for them, but at least, not many consumer bought wii u prior to prepare to mario kart 8.

In Wii U's current situation, 80%+ increase isn't strong. They should be about at least 160%+ increase.

Still catching up on the thread (on page 7/13), but was the issue with Wii U being up 90% YOY YTD ever straightened out? That works out to a crazy May for Wii U, and despite the real Wii U number being shockingly poor, that 90% YOY YTD increase would be a different order of crazy!

So

This is sort of the problem with MK8 doing well. Because now there's nothing to carry the momentum. I don't mean "Rarghargh they should have had Smash ready in the summer, they are fools," but, like, the next major game is coming out in September (Hyrule Warriors, so your definition of "major" should be adjusted considering what we're talking about). July if you want to count Wii Sports Club, which you probably shouldn't.

This is a problem that could have been easily foreseen and, more to the point, seems to be actively intentional? Like, Hyrule Warriors is coming out over a month after its Japanese release. Nintendo's actively sabotaging their own release schedule here.

They seemingly knew people were going to pick up the system for MK8, they've outright said they were counting on it. So why on earth did they fail to capitalize?

Are you doubting the power of Pushmo?

More seriously, do they need *new* titles to do that, or would strategic promotion of old titles be sufficient? I think Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Super Mario 3D World would be *excellent* pickups for new buyers who joined the system with Mario Kart - the problem is *educating* them of that fact?

RROD confirmed?
I'm on my third Xbone already. The first one died overnight with a smoking power supply and the second just randomly shut itself off for no reason after two weeks of regular use and never turned back on.

The current one has being going fine for a little over a month. *knocks on wood*

Man. When was the last time we had an NPD with so little information this far after its release?

100% serious? I had no idea this was an issue.

At the same time though, the 360 had a whole year to itself without any tight competition.

There's a whole lot of different factors in terms of comparing the two and agree that a straight up number comparison don't show the whole picture.
