NPD Sales Results for May 2014 [Up1: Wii U Hardware]

People are extrapolating customer pre-order fulfillment of a bundle with a major release upon release date towards a month of sales...?

No one and nothing can stand in front of the incoming June Wii U onslaught. If 2 days of sales could bring about that big of an increase, 5 weeks will be exponentially greater. Unfortunately, it rarely turns out that way. Doesn't matter which console you're rooting for

My point was that this console generation is not going to have the same amount of consoles sold as the last generation, not even close. As such how can anyone consider it a victory or success? I have always said the console market is going to fall in on itself, contract, take your pick, but the point is it will not sell nearly as many units as last generation which can't be seen by anyone, not 3rd parties, console makers, anyone, as a good thing.

And nothing in that statement is false for the simple fact that the WiiU is not close to the wii, and XB1 seems like it will end up selling less than the 360, the 3ds fell WAY behind the DS and the Vita WAY behind the PSP. The only console which saw a increase was the PS4 over the PS3.

And with this generation not going 8 years how will the PS4 carry the entire industry on its back? You expect it to sell 150/200 million consoles in 5 years?

The Wii was clearly an outlier, bought by many that had never owned a console and probably won't buy another one. It's hard to quantify how many of Wii owner fall into that category, but to include all of the Wii sales and then say the market is shrinking is disingenuous at best.

Really happy to see the current gen attach rates are so high on WD and Wolf. 25% and 20% respectively on old gen is very positive for less than a year into the generation.

Get back to me when Sony wins over 2 years in a row straight of NPD numbers.

Hell, I'm just glad Sony is announcing NPD numbers now, and that the Sony fan is excited for NPD numbers these days as well!

It's a sad indictment on the current state of the handheld market that selling 56k in a month is now considered coming back to life.

I understand it was coming from a very, very, very low base, but still. How long did it take the PSP to get to 56k?

Wait, what the fuck?! The 3DS outsold the Xbox One? Eve more so, I feel absolutely appalled at the apparent lack of surprise in most--if not all--people in this thread.
Everyone expected that the XBone's sales would take a nosedive the moment the $399 SKU was announced, with the difference being made up for in June when it launched. Just like how Vita sales slowed down and then spiked back up when the new model launched in May.

Sony never announces any numbers. And so sorry that your so bitter you bought the weaker console.

What specific dates do these numbers represent? Mario Kart was released on May 30th.

Is it the exact calendar month on May or does it represent some other start/end?

Ps2 did, please stop talking in absolutes about things that are 4 years away. You cannot tell the future. Even if the ps4 only sells 50 million it is still going to be a viable platform.

Maybe a few months more of shitty sales can change that?...

I gotta wonder if Nintendo just doesn't have any faith in a price drop. Wii U launched at too high of a price, full stop. A price drop now... would it really work? Maybe around when smash releases would be better.

Hardware sales were up 95% year over year.?

May 2013 was the worst May for console software sales in 13 years. Seriously, software hadn't sold worse since May 2000. The hardware.. well here it is:

360 114k
PS3 84k
Wii 36k
3DS 114k
Wii U 36k

Actually we should be able to derive very precise numbers if we knew exactly what figures that 95% covered and if it was in terms of raw sales or revenue.

I think this is bothering you a little too much. I'd suggest taking a rest for a while because this isn't healthy.

You should put a spoiler tag on that post, some of us suffer from high blood pressure.

If the Wii U hasn't outsold the Xbox One this month, it almost certainly will next month. Hell, it might even outsell the PS4, even if only for the month of June. Mario Kart is pretty big and as far as I know there aren't any games this month to push PS4's.

EDIT: If WD Bone > MK8 and 370k < MK8 < 380, then WD total has to be ~1.28m - ~1.32m (could be higher?). So, assuming this is true then that makes the distribution as such:

Breakdown:

4: ~588k - ~602k
1: ~371k - ~382k
o: ~179k - ~184k
3: ~141k - ~145k

Yep. It's amazing how software sales have turned in Sony's favor. Getting some of the biggest "next-gen (focused)" games' marketing is only going to reinforce the trend.

Revised. Like I said, those numbers could be higher, but I think that's the best we're gonna get with the info we have.

if the 24k + whatever else was sold in that week accounts for the 4x over the previous week, that would mean sales were something 6k-8k on average for the previous week. that also means sales would have dropped about 25-50% weekly from april to may. very possible, given that new owners may have been aware of the upcoming promotion and would have preferred waiting for the bundle.

if the 4x quoted refers to the first week of june, then it means the wii u sold in excess of 100k in the first week of june, which is, frankly, unbelievable. it's entirely possible that it could have happened, but i really doubt it.

While true, Reggie actually said in a venturebeat interview (which apparently everyone ignored some posts I and one other fellow had), since the release of MK8, the system has been selling daily 4x the amount it sold the two weeks before its release. That's far more telling to me imo.

People are more excited for Vita apparently :p

On PS4 and 3DS, no surprises there. Those have been the best-selling hardware units the last couple of months.

I think we got to hold judgement for XBO for the mean time. With the announced kinect-less unit I'm assuming a lot of potential buyers hold up to buying in May and waited for June. So that has to come into effect.

On the Wii U, let's also remember that many probably hold up for the bundle too in May 30th, so no surprise with the small quantity bump (do refurbished units also count? :p). But still a good sign for the Wii U and we'll probably see the effect of MK8 fully in June.

On the Vita, really nice to see that increase from the bundle. The most probable next bump will be the Minecraft bundle if it will ever happen. Gotta keep that momentum going forward.

They probably already did. I don't know if NPD was around then, but PS2 says hi.

Wii > Wii U that month by about 3.5K.

So you are saying there is a chance the XB1 climbs to 56k?

I think its obvious that the console market is shrinking due to a new competition taking market share away (mobile), we'd be lucky for gen 8 to sell 200 million consoles. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't sell 150 million.

Two phenomena at play here: the Wii and the handheld market. I don't really buy that iOS/Android gaming is eating away at home consoles, but I sure as hell buy that it's eroding the handheld market.

The Wii was the best-selling console of the last generation because it 1) appealed to non-gamers and 2) was widely-purchased as a second console. You've got to find some way to account for both of those factors when judging whether the console market is truly shrinking.

If you are talking about the WiiU and Kart, well you have to add in Reggie's comments, we have no idea, but almost two weeks out of the games launch he said they were seeing 4 times the daily sales, so you can do some math there.
