NPD Sales Results for May 2014 [Up1: Wii U Hardware]

Wii U should see much better performance post-E3 where people wanting to get in on Mario Kart discovered that Nintendo didn't announce a price cut/remodel/successor, as many were fearing.

i don't think e3 matters a whole lot in the context of the broader market regarding immediate sales. if it did, it may get swallowed up in mario kart 8 hype.

PS4's doing very well.

Apparently XBO improved a lot in June.

Good to see Wii U and Vita back from the dead. I have a feeling only the Wii U will be able to truly maintain better sales than in the past, though.

And it's concerning to see Nintendo's handheld continue to only sell 'decently', at least by Nintendo handheld standards. It's sustainable and certainly not bad, but it's no DS. I wonder if a dedicated game machine could even become another DS in today's world, though.
3DS is far from decent.

This is GBA after DS has been out a year territory.

I don't know if there's anything to support June being the month of sales growth, beyond it being a five week NPD month...
Again since we have multiple cross gen titles showing 80% next gen adoption rates, it shows the current market (of those who buy games) is nearly saturated. Dont expect much hardware growth here on out. I don't care what console fans want who to win or want to lose, the overall market is showing major warning signs.

X1 cannot have another sub 100k month. It's already close to 600k behind PS4.

Let's see if that "price drop" helps in June.

I don't think another sub 100k month would be the end of the world for Xbox. Remember how long the PS3 turnaround ended up taking; granted the PS3 had far more systemic problems than giving your fanbase the finger as they launched the console. If the trend continues I assume as long as the Xbox division isn't dipping into the corporate bank account to stay afloat the higher-ups won't change their strategy regarding the division as it pertains to this generation.

I do think Microsoft wants to compete with the lower level entry boxes somehow, and the consoles no longer can do that given their price. They will need to announce something similar to Playstation TV/Amazon Fire/Chromecast/etc... within the next year.

With new titles showing 80% next generation adoption and console sales plateauing quickly from early adoption front loading, I really don't see much growth in the current hardware sales trend. I actually see it only getting worse, holiday months aside. Everyone who is buying software already has the new console of their choice...

Compared to historical numbers, it's not that bad. This Holiday they should do well and we likely see the first real hardware price drops in 2015 from MS, Sony or both which will spur the real tidal wave of adoption.

DKC: 258k
LRFF: PS3 135k, 360 71k
PVZGW: ONE 257k, 360 150k
FFHD PS3: 259k
SP: 360 279k, PS3 228k
TF: ONE 969k, 360 559k
DS2: 360 212k PS3 209k
SS: 617k
MGSDEMO: total 357k, PS4>50%

DKCTF did about 20k in May
Lightning Returns did about 40k more since Feb
PVZ did 287k since Feb
FFX PS3 did 58k since March
South Park did about 67k since March
Titanfall did 29k on XB1 and about 60k on 360 in May (my numbers may be a bit off since this doesn't add up to the main chart)
Dark Souls did 71k since march
Second Son did about 35k in May
MGS did 79k sales since march

Second Son numbers seem bad. Am I wrong?

Eh they're not particularly bad or good I would say. I think it's probably very good for the series but apparently infamous has always been a mid-level series sales-wise. I doubt the budget was too big relative to other AAA games

C'mon this is outdated. We need the splatoon one now.

Not a fair comparison given the supply/demand differential between 360 vs PS4.

2007 is a more apt comparison.
No next year will be a more apt comparison to 2007.

Being on the market for the same amount of time and all. At the rate we're going at least one (leaning on One myself) will be behind their predecessor in a LTD stance by then. PS4 likely won't be too much higher than 360 LTD in America if this rate is consistent as well. I doubt it falls behind 360 LTD, but if this is the bar, they very well could in America by the spring of 2016.

I know people keep sayitnv that but honestly its ignoring modern consumer electronic trends and disruptors. The previous generations from 8 years ago are not that great of a comparison, mark my words.

I dont think so either. The market will constrict like it did for gens before but I think it will happen ALOT faster then last gen.

The problem with the Wii U is that momentum can't really be sustained. Their huge releases are followed by...nothing for the next 1-2 months typically.
Well duh, but the effects of Mario Kart will be fun to follow to see what the tail off is till their holiday releases.

Why? PS4 is selling way better than xbox 360 and Xbox One is selling better than PS3. The Wii thing we were already talking about but the biggest impact for that would be software which the vast majority of was nintendo. The plastic instruments died long ago and fitness soon followed Ubisoft now has more than just AC selling to the 'hd' audience so the drop in Just Dance isnt as big a deal (though profit margins/roi is a thing).

Did you forget how horribly awful sales of the 360 and ps3 were in the beginning? That isn't a baseline to want to be compared to as a market leader. Did you forget that 3rd parties owned like 2/3 of Wii software sales (again iirc)?

Just dance is supposed to be an extremely large profit Center for Ubi btw. They famously financed a lot of expensive things with a lot of cheap things. If the cheap things don't sell anywhere near as much anymore...

Thinking of first May's PS4 is under 360's first May, and well over PS3's. One is just well under both.

taking a single month out of context, is it completely irreleant to you that the ps4 sold in 2 months what the 360 took what 5months? Is It irrelevant that the 360 was sold out for several of those months? The Xbox one is also well ahead of ps3 not just because of its fantastic start and this month is only slightly behind ps3 month and thats with an early price drop announcement.

There were doom articles in january with poor numbers remember? then febuary boosted everyting again. I just don't see the sense in basing your entire point off one month.

I'm just trying to be optimistic because it's been Doom and Gloom for the industry for a long time now and this is the first positive month in several years I think so that is promising. I would hate to see the industry go through a major crash. I know some folks cherish the thought of the death of AAA gaming and a revolution in the Indie world, but I fear it. I love me some AAA and think of all the folks that would go out of work permanently, scary.

Anyone know about how poor Mario Golf: World Tour did? Any rough estimates? I'm a little sad it didn't do a little better considering how good the game is and how much things they put into the game compared to Mario Tennis Open and Mario Tennis Open last I check managed to sell a million.

the wii u was already up year over year for almost every month. with mario kart, it will probably have raised the baseline to a point where it doesn't dip below 40k like it did routinely last year. not that it sounds particularly impressive, but the system will probably sell a million units in the us this year. maybe even a million more from where it currently is.

Wow and Kirby hitting the top 10

Level 5 doesn't have a Western publishing arm.

....Yeah, Square-Enix has no excuse at all.
Too bad Nintendo didn't pick up Yokai Watch too but Level 5 Asked on Twitter if we wanted it and there have been trademarks filed for if.

so people were waiting for those games to buy a 3ds ?

More like those games helped spark an interest in the 3DS, I guess.

People like to play Kirby games. Acadoental evidence, but in my twitter feed, there was a bunch of baseball writers who were talking about how good Kirby Triple Deluxe was. One of them had a 3DS and the game (and he downloaded it), another seemed interested especially that it was a tradtional platformer, and another person chimed in that he only had a Nvidia Shield and knew he was doing it wrong. lol.
