I'm really looking forward to Ubisoft responding to this. The difference is unbelieveable

Wait... both of his hands are in his pockets, but his shadow seems to be flipping us the middle finger.

The game looks pretty amazing though with these effects turned on... .

I think Ubisoft is trying to tell us something through the game.

Well Dark Souls 2 did the same shit with their downgrade to keep some parity between PC and Consoles. I really feel like Sony and Microsoft have a big hand in pushing publishers to tell their developers to help not make multiplatform games look dated on their static machines. And the shitty part of it is that they show off ultra high graphics on their game running on a PC and then SLOWLY wean them towards inferior graphics and performance (it's our decision that this game is better suited to run at 30fps).

The tragedy is that there are people who defend companies that put out games like Need for Speed with locked frame rates or Watch Dogs with locked graphics settings all because they want they've been asked to keep parity. I wonder if they get a little under the table.for doing shit like this.

Why not let a game flourish on better hardware and just let the closed platform boxes get scaled back versions with all media coverage showing the consolized version of the game so as not to crush the expectations of their consumers. Are MS and Sony that afraid to let developers show that they have archaic tech? It's not like their target group even cares if a PC runs it better or if it's missing a few bells and whisltes.

This kind of practice just disgusts me.

What are the odds of some tesselation files hidden somewhere in the retail code? I know what we saw of E3 2012 was probably just vertical slice in relation to tesselation but I can dream
;'(

According to Ubisoft we are all wrong. That's their incomprehensible stance at this time.

This is what pisses me off the most, the gaslighting. Millions of people are seeing this shit and they think they can go "na na na can't hear you, you're wrong, no idea what you're talking about". Get your shit together Ubisoft.

Wait, so are we meant to actually change the "0"s to "1"s here? If so, where exactly is the file? Or does the mod fix that itself.

Not a direct comparison because the game won't put me in the same place every time reload a save, but same settings/time of day for sure (Ultra everything, 1080p and SMAA):

In a few hours when I come to terms with the fact that I have nothing to play on my new PS4, I'll probably spend the time to get a shot for shot direct comparison.

Edit:

Random not comparison screenshots from .7:
outside of more DOF...i dont see a huge difference at all

WOW.

Wow.

I understand her job, I do. She's PR. But holy shit, when things like this explode and melt down, PR needs to be saving face and working to win back the consumer(s), not lazily slopping together Twitter responses that amount to "I already said before it wasn't downgraded don't bring me this nonsense proof."

UBI really should be looking into a patch that officially gets this stuff working properly.

Wish there was a version that just added the technical stuff without modifying fog and whatever else. can't figure out how to unpack these files properly to change them myself.

The game uses a very surreal texture implementation. For every texture, there is a basic texture with mipmaps and a higher resolution texture without mipmaps. Lower texture quality uses the medium mip of the regular texture as max. Medium texture quality uses the regular texture and high texture quality (called ultra ingame) uses regular texture BUT blend to higher texture for close ups. Close up distance depends of screen resolution. So it's a pixel/texel ratio in the end.

The problem is that I think gpu drivers are not optimized to load in memory every texture twice. They are optimized to mess with mipmaps to avoid shimmering and to save memory. Walking or driving in watch dogs implies you need to load a new big texture every time a material is near the camera. It's not the same that showing the big mip of the texture already loaded.

In one hand, using tweaks as always loading the big mip, can fix stuttering. But you will have shimmering here and there. I'm testing now with using ultra textures with or without mips as medium textures. So the game don't mess with double number of files, with good results.
what the hell ubisoft... first the whole unified memory issue from making the PC version a straight console port, and NOW THIS?! GTFO OF HERE UBISOFT. UGH

If that DOF effect is on all the time, it's pretty goddamned terrible. NEARSIGHTED SIMULATOR 2014

Makes for nice screens though.

I don't get the downgrade without reason mentality that I'm reading here. Seriously, let's be the judge, jury and executioner a bit more. Just looking at some of the pics I can see at least at a glance why they wouldn't have shipped with that stuff enabled. With a deeper look there is potential for quality or compatibility issues. I'm sure Ubisoft considered the risks and did a CBA, I doubt they wanted to spite gamers just because they could *shakes head*.

Wow, that is horrible, even for Ubisoft. I guess it is hard when there is no way to justify it. My cynicism tells me that Sony/Ms asked Ubisoft to downgrade the game on PC since a massive gap between the PC version and the new gen console versions this early in the gen would not bode well for them.

I'm going to guess that Ubisoft will claim that this was an aesthetic choice, and that they believe that the game looks better the way it shipped.
Which is total BS.

Joke or not:

I have a 7850 and it runs okay but not great, with a few things turned down to high instead of ultra I get above 30fps.

I'm just a console peasant, but I thought that PS4's GPU is basically a 7850-7870. As I wrote earlier: Until mid-range PCs clearly outpace the PS4, it doesn't make any sense (to me) that average/medium PC graphics settings on a popular third-party games need massive downgrades. Or does it?
B-bbb-but dat tablet CPU?

Can someone explain? If PS4 is really so horribly weak, why are those effects (this "mod") totally running decently on a 7850? They don't require a high-end rig at all, right?

Anyone wanna help me out for a sec? Trying to get this mod installed and the part of the readme for v0.7 that says:

"In render profile find the words quality="_runtime" and change it to "ultra" save the file and close"

doesn't really make sense to me. I've ctrl+f'd in the GamerProfile.xml and the only line with _runtime on it is:

id="_runtime"

And besides that, I have an instance of Quality already. It says:

Quality="optimal"

Which do I change?

I'm in the same boat as this guy. Any advice?

I don't know if you realize this or not, but mocking the people who criticize the crap CPUs in the XB1 and PS4 doesn't magically make them powerful processors.

You need a high end GPU to run WD with all the bells and whistles at a playable framerate.

Loving the patch so far. Used another members modified one that had a easier control on the DOF.

Running the game on 3200 x 1800 locked at 30. The patch got rid of the stuttering for me so the game is running with no hick ups at 30fps now.

Looking forward to how much further this patch progresses.

Beats me, my CPU is a i5-2500k slightly overclocked so I'm sure that has something to do with it, but the game actually runs better for me with the mod which is just crazy if you think about it. This whole situation is just weird lol.

I don't understand all the conspiracy theories running around. It just looks like a lazy PC port with a bunch of settings (back from their scripted demo days) that they couldn't be bothered to test in the full game. I don't think it's Ubisoft caring about console versions as much as Ubisoft not caring about the PC version.

It just doesn't make sense that they would implement these settings, check they work and then remove them because of console fanboys. It makes no sense whatsoever. Especially when a few of them don't impact performance much.

It all just screams laziness to me instead of some console manufacturer conspiracy.

I feel like consoles should be able to run these things, with proper optimization. Since the game is running at, I believe, 900p 30fps.
