NPD Sales Results for May 2014 [Up1: Wii U Hardware]

I don't know, Sony recently hiked it's prices in Canada where the PS4 is now at $449 and the kinectless Xbox One is at $399.

Then, you have the Master Chief Collection out soon which will move consoles. I think th gap will actually narrow quite a bit this year, at least in North America.

$399 Xbox One isn't even in the top 100 on Amazon.ca. Titanfall bundle is 89. Even gamecube controllers are selling more.

Too many problems with streaming, including ones impossible to solve like input lag.

I think cheap hardware will continue to be the norm going forward. PS4 and XBO are basically off-the-shelf PC parts. They need to make money off the hardware right away at launch, or at least not lose anything on it. Expect that to continue, and expect no one to dare launch a console above $400 from now on as well.
If it isn't cheaper than a phone/tablet good luck. Demographics are changing quickly and Japan is showing us our future.

Dark Souls 2 [360] 212k [PS3] 209k

Wow, I would never have expected 360 to outpace PS3 on this game. Game had to have broken well over 1M worldwide by now. Great to see.

Well the install base of Xbox 360 is way bigger than Ps3's in USA.The fact that the numbers are pretty much equal shows how great the attach rate of this franchise is on PS3.

Eh 360 has an US install base of like 41M I think? Versus like maybe 26M PS3?

So an install base difference of like 15M and a sales difference of like 3k...

It should also be noted that DSII sold more on the PS3 during March and April, so...

another crap month, even if wiiu and vita 2000 showing life are highlights.

seeing the LTD's on some of these games is even harder to bare... at this point im not even impressed with the ps4 numbers. its basically the only platform keeping this gen alive post launch, and were talking acceptable sales, not great sales.

the Christmas ramp up better be killer for this gen, October is so overloaded that were destined to see tears from third parties.

Said in every NPD thread. The next month will always be interesting and it will.

Will the Kinectless SKU re-energize the Xbox One?

Can a full month of the MK8 bundle resurrect the Wii U?

Can PS4 hold the line?
Well summer is usually boring. With MK8 and XB1 adding a new sku, it's making things interesting for once. Last year had The Last of Us for example.
I don't think 75k for Xbox one can be called 'ok'.

It is ok, all things considering with the announcement of the Kinect-less sku.

THANK YOU!!!

My attempt at the first pie chart didn't fit with the previous hints, but my attempt on this one looks to be spot on with the known data!

My calculations in degrees (using GIMP's measuring tool):
Wii - 6.8
Wii U - 37.6
PS3 - 22.4
PS4 - 121.2
360 - 35.3
XB1 - 47.5
3DS - 54.1
PSV - 35.1

=>

PS4 = 195.4K
3DS = 87.2K
XB1 = 76.6K
Wii U = 60.6K
360 = 56.9K
PSV = 56.7K
PS3 = 36.1K
Wii = 11.0K

=>

For predictions:
PS4 - 195K
3DS - 87K
XB1 - 77K
WIIU - 61K (close to the 85% number and within reason for calling it an 85% increase, since this would be 86% increase; can't expect everyone to be as precise as a math guy :p )
360 - 57K
PS3 - 36K

Bleh. Since everyone wants to be pedantic. Remeasured.

Code:
Angles	Proportion	000s
7.038	0.01955		11
37.472	0.104088889	60
22.481	0.062447222	36
120.774	0.335483333	194
35.387	0.098297222	57
47.464	0.131844444	76
54.538	0.151494444	87
34.846	0.096794444	56
60.1 as base, angles add to 360 degrees. Sum of Xbox + Wii U < PS4. Vita 56K.

Mine are close to yours (Vita is 56.6K :p ), so I think I'll go with mine for the predictions. Good to have a second eye on them from someone used to this! :)

I think ms expected a bloodbath this month anyways so they announced $399 sku weeks in advance. Usually price adjustments aren't announced ahead of time.

Or it was just the wrong game at the wrong time. I feel like I just bought DKCR for the 3DS. I didn't need another one so soon.

I agree honestly. DKCR was the first traditional 2D DK since SNES. Basically gave it the NSMB effect. I wanted a 3D game from Retro on my HD console. Or basically anything other than more DKC.

@cream, Could we get updated #s for 3D World and Link Between Worlds? I have a feeling 3D World might have sold better than Tropical Freeze this past month at the very least.

If it isn't cheaper than a phone/tablet good luck. Demographics are changing quickly and Japan is showing us our future.

Japan has a culture of heavy public transportation use and limited big television use, so it's no wonder that that market favors both smartphones and dedicated handheld game console, although sales of the latter are lower than in the previous generation.

The US is very different. Home consoles will continue to sell well in the US.

But dedicated handheld game systems may be in a bit of trouble in both regions. In both regions it's tough to beat the convenience of a smartphone.

I can't speak for Europe.

well the xbox one just put up a sub-gc month. well, pretty much everything except the ps4 did. the ps4 put up a sub original xbox month.

And yet PS4 is above LTD of Wii U already by at least 1 million consoles ahead with almost 3:1 ratio this month, and Xbone is on its way.

Yeah, I still think Wii U is on another level of bad.

So I take it PS4 is behind Wii launch aligned now?

What's second best PS2?

no, i'm just comparing similar months in their lifecycles. pretty sure both the xbox one and ps4 are ahead of the wii and ps2 at this point. the wii and ps2 were heavily supply constrained while the ps4 and xbox one appear to have been very frontloaded, which is sort of that audience's m.o.

GTAV is going to give third parties nightmares again this year.

Darn I knew I was gonna forget about NPD today

Looks like MK8 did well, Wii U not so much. Don't know how much you can expect with two days of sales but there it is.

Vita sees an absurd percentage increase, and hardware sales go back to being awful.

These predictions of the disastrous death of the worldwide console industry, despite being ridiculous, also don't seem to ever consider the impact new markets will have on sales. Most notably being China.

I don't think we'll see a contraction. I think it will grow by leaps and bounds. The importance of the North American market will simply decline, as it has been.

I don't think the situation of Xbone and PS4 are that bright, but they aren't doing sub-GC numbers and looking for 1 million consoles in a year....

There are sad numbers and then there's Wii U and Vita....
These haven't hit mass market price points yet. Not even the Wii U.
Besides PS4 in particular is the highest selling console LTD isn't it? The only one that might have sold more is the original Wii.

No, it was March. That's when shipments (and NPDs) increased dramatically for 360.

March was when supply started increasing dramatically, but still spotty. I recall many people not being able to get a 360 until May. Thereafter, it was pretty much universally available on store shelves without issue. We saw the same thing with PS4 sales being "available" in spotty amounts during the early part of the year, peaking in March when supply started to meet demand.

PS4 ~ 194k
XB1 ~ 76k

oh dear, wonder how next NPD will look. So we can assume Titanfall didn't push consoles, wonder if the price drop will make any significant bump in sales. Any amazon findings regarding this so far?

Ps4 selling almost 200k seems pretty damn good to me considering the other numbers.

I hope vita can keep an upward trend. Such a great device.

Ah we're at the point of an NPD thread where we use normal Vita sales as a unit of measure to make other systems seem less bad. I do so love the circle of life in a NPD thread

I messed up with the 3DS angle. It should be 87K. Now it fits better with shinra-bansho's numbers, too. :D

Damn! I mean good for being more accurate and stuff...

I wonder how many publishers are going to look at October's calender, and decide maybe another few months of polishing off their game for a few months might be worth it. Not sure how they decide when would be the better time to sell... in a crazily crowded holiday period, or Jan/Feb when there's less sales, but far less competition.

Newer markets will have little to no impact on the final LTD for both the XB1 and PS4. Both consoles will sell most of their LTD in Europe and NA(They may add a couple million to both consoles LTD).

Eh you guys are coming up short on a few things.

3ds is closer to 100k

Muhahaaha my predictions shall be avenged!!!!

If it helps anyone else when I did the angle measurements I got

Code:

Stuff em all into March right before the fiscal year ends. Par for the course.
