Media Create Sales: Week 23, 2014 (Jun 02 - Jun 08)

Dengeki is under Ascii Media Works and Famitsu is under Enterbrain. Both were subsidiaries of Kadokawa Holdings up until the massive merger where Kadokawa Holdings was dissolved and all subsidiaries formed into a single new company - Kadokawa. Now all former subsidiaries exist only as brands within a singular corporate entity.

And yet both Enterbrain and Ascii are tracking sales numbers? Kinda weird that they are competing with each other in a segment that's likely both expensive to maintain and yet only appeals to a very limited number of possible customers.

I don't think they're really competing. Enterbrain's competition for sales tracking and business analysis is Media Create. Dengeki's rankings seem to be a value-added part of their overall coverage on news. I could be wrong on this, but I don't see any large business plan with regards to their data. On the other hand, both Media Create and Enterbrain have clear business package for those who want to subscribe to more comprehensive data, analysis of the industry, and access to the database for historical data. Entertain also publishes yearly white paper reports on the industry with annual sales data. I don't think Ascii does that at all.

Maybe it's possible that Dengeki's tracking is much more superficial and less comprehensive, which keeps the maintenance cost low enough so they just keep it there as a weekly feature for readers? I dunno.

Is this news article posted today old news or actually new stuff?

Edit: Article seems to be about new building opening for Nintendo that started operation yesterday and that they are working on next gen game consoles.

I'd say it's no news apart from the fact it opened yesterday (we only knew they were still working on it and transferring stuff before), and the next gen console speculation. The rest was known (like Iwata saying it was to consolidate game and hardware development)

Edit: might be worth to bump that old thread about this subject though (Nintendo's new building).

I'd say "Why not?" :p

So, this means that now the teams are effectively working in the new building, right?

Oh, just noticed Super Smash Bros. on the 3DS comes out in September in Japan? (Totally missed that). That's odd. It's probably just easier to get the JP version out of the way, but I'm convinced they'll have a new 3DS model by then (maybe on the same day, or before... not sure. But with OG 3DS sales below 10k for quite a while now, pretty sure it's going to get replaced soon.

With STEAM, Smash, and Pokemon being the only new Nintendo games coming out on the 3DS wouldn't it just be better to wait until next year and focus all of their resources on releasing a successor instead?

Japan still needs the 2DS, doesn't it?

Nintendo always have several iterations of a handheld, and so far, 3DS only got 2 in Japan. If there's a successor next year, it won't be out before late in the year, and a new 3DS model in September or so would be just right (they did something similar with the DSi XL, released in late nov. 2009, with the 3DS in Feb 2011)). Though I'm expecting a successor early 2016 instead.

And I doubt Nintendo will stay without a new model until late next year, not with the 3DS selling -50% compared to 2013.

I used to think Japan would get the 2DS at one point, but I'm not sure anymore. 2DS was announced for the west roughly 9 months ago, and still no sign of it being released in Japan (other than 2 trademarks, but that's probably just Nintendo protecting their stuff).

Seems really odd to be honest. And what's more, Nintendo always said this was a western-market focused model, where they needed an affordable model for children and stuff. Meanwhile, I don't the price was really ever an issue in Japan, at least not after the epic price cut of 2011.

So honestly, I dunno. I'm really expecting a new model now, not the 2DS. And besides, wouldn't be the first time Japan doesn't get a console model... it never got the Wii Mini for example.

^^ I sincerely believe we will get an announcement of a new model during the summer, with a release sometime before the holidays.

It just fits the pattern to well

Completely forgot that one, so the 2DS wouldn't be the first western-exclusive Nintendo hardware, that's interesting. What else can Nintendo introduce with a new 3DS hardware redesign?

Has the 3DS ever been sub 10K since the price cut?

No leaks yet?

Looks like MCV finally realised there's no DST in Japan :p

I dunno, I expect the release to happen roughly 1 months after the announcement. They don't want to hurt 3DS for too long (as people would inevitably wait for the new model).

No idea, but it'd have to provided enough value for :

1) customers not yet equipped to finally buy a 3DS
2) existing customers to upgrade toward that new model

I honestly got no good idea, though many people seem to be expecting a DSi-like model. Personally, I can see a 3DS with a screen slightly smaller than the XL, more powerful to get more games for the Virtual Consoles, but I'm out of ideas, really...

Yeah, for some reason there was a lag on hardware number update. Edited post with correct numbers now. Software was updated already though.

Hey it's not as depressing (but still depressing) as it could be. 3DS hasn't dropped too badly and the Wii U isn't sub 10k yet... But yeah still awful.
