Official Destiny Alpha Withdrawal Thread

Trying to figure out if I want this on PS4 or XBO. I see the resolution is the same, and I know that there will be some "PS4 exclusive content" which probably means cosmetic stuff that I don't care much about.

There was a rumor that Bungie magically said PS4 was the "lead platform" but that turned out to be BS.

Anything else I should know?

I believe there's a whole Strike mission that's PS exclusive.

It's one multiplayer map, one strike*, two weapons, some (three?) exclusive ships, three sets of armor**.

*Strikes are major cooperative missions designed for 3 players, I don't know if we know how many are in the game but I wouldn't expect that many
**One for each class

PS4 will probably have better graphics. Not resolution or frame rate, but more particles, better lighting, etc.

Thanks dudes! Tough decision. Now I have to decide between playing with friends or better graphics/more features...

Friends, every time. I don't even think that is an opinion when it comes to Destiny. Unless you are really a Lone Wolf player who can't stand humanity, you want to experience Destiny with your friends.

Or find new PS4 friends. Problem solved.

I am betting just resolution differences. That takes no additional development costs if the hardware can push it.

PS4 vs Xbox One will be running at 30FPS, and even the One can run games at 1080p/30fps and be fine.

I also weighed this option after the alpha, and I came to realize that despite having a full Xbox friendlist, I've only really played with a handful of them over the last few years. Most of the people on my list who are getting Destiny have already picked up a PS4 for it, so I'd actually have less of my old friends to play with if I picked it up for Xbox.

Of course, I'm not opposed to making new ones (and it's not like I'm abandoning Xbox entirely), so I think I'm satisfied with this choice. Besides, if the matchmaking for co-op ends up working properly, I wont even need that many people on. Destiny is one of those games where I can enjoy running around doing my own thing.

Insurance was useless in this instance.

I'll be able to scrounge enough money to get a PS4 by the end of the week, though.
Huh?! Useless insurance?! What, did you leave the house unlocked or something??!?

At least you'll have a PS4 in the end, but still... :-/

Are you Destiny die-hards all going PS4?

I haven't been keeping up with the threads to get a feel for GAF's intent...

In gaf region sign-ups i don't think i have seen a single person not on PS4 - except two on XB1 in the MST timezone and one on PS3.

So, whats with the lack of cellectors edition info.. we all know its coming.. Right?

Thought it was a sure thing as well considering it's bungie but... if it isn't announced during/just after beta then it would be way too late.

PS4 man, the only way to fly.

Deductible was too high and they said they'd raise my rates if I filed a claim.

Private insurance, man. What a joke.
Just another reason why I'm glad I don't live in the US, I guess. Insurance in NZ isn't anywhere near as painful as how you've described it.

I'm still holding out hope that a CE is announced. I feel so dirty, buying a... urgh... "standard" version of a game ~_~

Hello Destiny Gaf, I have some questions seeing how much excitement there is in this thread from those who played the beta. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best, how would you rate Destiny's coop experience based on the Alpha? I love co-op games, I'm the type of player who would be up for hours trying to beat all 50 waves in Gears of War 2 and 3's Horde mode on insane difficulty, or playing Nazi Zombies on World at War, loved the challenge but also how well everything molded together, even when playing with randoms. Do you gets a sense based off the Alpha that the cooperative experience in Destiny is fantastic as well? Hearing about Raids is getting me hyped since that more up my alley, debating on whether I should buy a next gen console for Destiny (had one but had to sell it). Thanks for any opinions/experiences anyone can share, I'd appreciate it.
15/10.

Truthfully, probably about an 8/10. It's pretty awesome to be wandering around Free Roam and randomly coming across other players/Fire Teams.

Destiny is probably and 8 or a 9 on the co-op fun scale for me. What I think is Destiny's best feature when it comes to its co-op is how seamless it is with the main game. I'd have to play it more to see how it measures up, for me, with Halo's co-op.

Well the coop experience I was getting was totally awesome until the connection hiccups came but, I still had the time of my life with the Alpha. It was an Alpha and I gave it
9/10.

8.8/10

We just got a small taste of it in the alpha, I want to see what the whole package will be like. I'd like to see missions where each player has to do a different action for the whole fire team to reach its goal. Maybe, one guy pulls a lever, another goes through a newly opened door to hack a computer or something.

Yikes, sorry to hear that. Is that all they took? I can empathise. About 5 years ago my house was burglarized, but they took a lot more than just my games consoles and games library. The deductible was barely a blip.... :(

I love stuff like this, makes me think back to Payday 2 when you're breaking into a guys private vault to get gold and you need someone to monitor and deactivate the security lasers while someone else is clearing out the gold.

I downloaded a CoD demo on PS3 to see what it would feel like playing FPS on Playstation. After playing Halo for so many years, it felt like my thumbs were being stretched uncomfortably. I'm so used to the offset sticks on 360...

Halo ancients who played the alpha - was it hard to get used to the DS4 controller?

The DS4 is a billion times better for shooters than the DS3 was.

They said ask them again "next week"

Wonder if it was in reguards to their April 1st joke they did. If so... Im kinda doubting a ce.
Yup, it was for their April Fools Day joke. I hope that we hear an announcement on/just after the beta for a CE but since we're so close now to the actual release date I'm not holding my breath anymore...

The DS4 is a fucking excellent controller, and Dragonball Z-Power-Level-numbers above the DS3. You shouldn't have any issues going to the DS4 at all.

The DS3 sucks compared to the DS4 for first person shooters. Analogs feel much better in terms of grip, resistance, all that jazz and the triggers are also much better.

Have really had no problem pulling off precise head shots with the DS4. My only complaint with the controller is the atrocious battery life.

Yup. The size of the DS4 makes it feel better. the sticks are a lot firmer too. That's one reason I really like the DS4.

If you like the 360 controller odds are you will love the DS4. My only complaint is stick placement but I prefer Asymmetrical. Everything else is got tier.

The sticks themselves have almost the exact same throw and stiffness of the 360 ones.

meanwhile I can't seem to get used to the longer throw and looseness of the Xbone sticks.

just my opinion.

CoD is an awful FPS to try to judge the controller on anyways because it feels weird as hell in general. KZ felt fine, BF4 felt fine, Warframe felt fine, but CoD... I can't really explain it, it just feels off. Even compared to other CoD games.

LIES LIES LIES, ALL LIES. I feel like I am the only one who likes the DS3 sometimes. Those loose sticks are so good. I wish sony made an adapter to be able to use the DS3 on the PS4, but alas the ps4 controller is fine.

Yea I have several bones to pick with the controller.

I may as well go ahead and list my own qualms with the system as a first time PS4 owner:

Likes:

  • I like the lightbar and how it's tuned to gameplay. I thought the way they used it in Destiny was clever (yellow when super was charged, red when health was low, white when using flashlight, etc.)
  • The touchpad is my favorite new addition to controllers this gen considering its potential, but I wish it was used more often (especially with Destiny's cursor menus).
  • Share feature is great [when it works]. Easy to take screenshots or record a clip, and I can copy it to a USB or [usually] upload it to FB quickly. Until this is very accessible on the Xbox One (I don't want to talk to my system), this will be a huge plus for the PS4. Reminds me of the screenshot feature in Animal Crossing New Leaf, which was also a big part of that experience when I played.
  • Probably the best onscreen keyboard I've used on a console.
  • I really like the PS4 menu music. This made the system grow on me more than anything. Gives the menu it's own personality, which blended very nicely with Destiny's music.
  • The console itself is very discrete.

Dislikes (mostly about the controller):

  • Wow, the controller battery life is weak. It's good that it's rechargeable and I'm always right next to my consoles when I play, but if I'm going to be tethered to it so often then it may as well be permanently wired.
  • The wireless range is really lousy. I can take my 360 controller all the way upstairs to the other side of the house and still be able to hear voice chat. I'll walk 20 feet with the PS4 controller and it's ready to cut off.
  • The controller has come a long way since the original pad, but it can still go a bit further IMO. Firstly, the sticks are still too close. I still experience thumb bumps even when adjusting their position. I also don't like how hard the edges on the face buttons are. The D-pad is good (as always), but the Share and Options buttons disappear into the controller and take more pressure to use than the others. I'm sure this was deliberate, but it's annoying, especially when I'm trying to upload a screen quickly. Also, the L2 and R2 triggers have a bit too much resistance for shooters. They're probably amazing for driving games, but resistance is not what triggers need when you're trying to hit a RoF cap. Lastly, the PS button is in a very bad place. I have to take my thumb off the joystick to press it or slide over, which moves the joystick. I'm sure most of these issues could be solved if the pad was just a bit larger.
  • The mic that came with the system is honestly the worst headphone/mic I've ever used (including the ones in the candy dispensers in front of a Wal-Mart). Even the cheap 360 headset has better sound quality than this. That wouldn't be much of an issue if the damned earpiece wouldn't hurt my ears after just 20 minutes. They didn't really try with this...
  • A lot of menu options feel hidden or take too many "strokes" to get to. Joining a party chat for instance takes too long. I know the OS can be upgraded so this isn't that much of an issue to me, but it was noticeable.
  • Not a fan of the PSN ID system. Why wont they let people change their names, and why did they make the naming process so complicated? I like the option to use my "real name", but it only shows up for friends so it kinda defeats the purpose.

I haven't owned a Playstation since the PSOne so I've missed many of the stuff they've introduced since then. The PS4 is definitely a well built system, and I like what Bungie has done with it for Destiny. Various aspects of it are growing on me, so at this point I'm mostly satisfied with it as a Destiny machine. As for all the "PS4 is superior to Xbox One" comments that swept GAF over the last year, I'm not seeing it. I haven't owned an Xbox One yet so that could very well be true, but if all that hype was about the resolution and "more particles" (which I don't care much about), then consider me unconvinced.

The mic is easily my biggest WTF though. It's like they didn't even try.

I love the 360 controller. It's still the best controller on the market, but at best I can say I tolerate the DS4. And I also tolerate the XB1 controller. Mash those two up and we might have a legit contender. DS4 dpad, buttons, stick tension, and handles mixed with Xbox One's stick placement, stick tops, triggers and battery life.

The flat face buttons are actually my favorite part of a Playstation controller. Rounded buttons are pretty terrible for any action or fighting game.

The 360 D-Pad is awful though. Made it rather useless for playing any classic emulated games.
