Sakaguchi's new game at Japan Expo w/ SoftBank/GungHo's Korean f2p division

All time favorite game developer right here. I can't wait to see what he has planned next, regardless of platform. Please, please not a cell phone game.

Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey HD would be a great start. I hope MS gives Sakaguchi a handful of cash to do something new as well.

I wonder why MS doesn't just contract a sequel to any competent developer? They did it for Crackdown 2, Killer Instinct, etc... There appears to be a hardcore fanbase that would gladly support it.

Eww, I can envisage the disaster that would be.

Totally it is a huge gamble in today's market.

In all seriousness i don't think we will hear about any new Sony japan projects until Bloodborne is released!

Why? From Software is the main dev for Bloodbourne. Soul Sacrifice Delta shipped recently and Freedom Wars comes out today. So there are probably new projects in the dev stage already.

Well, you can add Miyamoto to the OP and the title.

Shigeru MIYAMOTO, Mario’s creator at Japan Expo

… and also Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, and so many more: Japan Expo has the great honor of welcoming a living legend of video game with Shigeru MIYAMOTO, 15th Anniversary Special Guest of the festival!

Considered the greatest video game designer in the world by his peers, and called “The Spielberg of Video Games” by Time magazine (May 1996), Shigeru MIYAMOTO has worked on more than 100 different Nintendo video games and created licenses such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Pikmin, Wii Fit, Luigi’s Mansion and StarFox. In 2006, Shigeru MIYAMOTO became one of the first video game creators knighted into France’s Order of Arts and Letters.

For its 15th Anniversary, Japan Expo is sharing with you the chance of welcoming him and is waiting for you on Friday, July 4 for an exceptional masterclass, from 2.45 pm to 4.15 pm on the video game stage.

But many people didn't play it because it was on Wii.

It sold just as well as Lost Odyssey or Blue Dragon.

By the end of 2011, the game had sold nearly 160,000 copies in Japan.[53] After the release of The Last Story in North America, Xseed Games's Executive Vice President Ken Berry stated that "The Last Story has become our most successful title to date."

As far as I know, Lost Odyssey did well over 300k in the US alone. Is there info to indicate that Last Story got anywhere near that?

This is where we're at now. Mobile games. F2P games. Garbage moe crap. Vita/3DS. <--- The fate of J-RPGs, everybody! Stop having hope.

Edit: Oh, and Tales and Persona.

I'll have hope, but not from a concept studio whose previous contracted studio they worked with are now non-existent, and has had little update or murmurs within the Japanese development scene to have cooked up something amongst studios with the talent/experience to build high-quality JRPGs.

Some things need to be framed contextually. Every announcement of studios working on PS3/Vita/3DS/etc JRPGs like Shining, Digimon Bravely, etc means another less studio whom Mistwalker could have partnered with.

After a certain point, it's pretty clear that... whatever Mistwalker is making is probably not the game we want.

didn't you guys saw the Gravity Europe logo together with the Mistwalker one in the news posted in the OP?

They are the european distributor for stuff like this: http://www.gravity-gateway.com/jeux.html?Langue=en_GB

basically this confirms it's either a Mobile game, a Browser game, a F2P game, or a combination of those.

:(

Donotwanttobelieve. :p

a) He's returning to Square and making FF XVI, similar in style to FF VI.

b) Sony to buy Mistwalker and fund a AAA Jrpg for the PS4 called "Last Odyssey"!

I just want his next game to be on Sony hardware, since that's what I have :(

I KNEW he was up to something, given all the meetings he's been posting about on facebook/twitter.
Hope it's good. No iOS/browser plz.

Damn...

I intended to visit Japan Expo this year, then decided against because I have to visit friends on the 5th. No, I want to reconsider my decision. I probably don't have many chances to see him for real...

I would be ok with a mobile game as long as its decent and doesn't have IAP.

I guess we need to be realistic.

Why doesn't the Gooch ever come to the US?!?! I NEED him to sign my copy of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI.

lol, 'nother JP dev mobile troll.

How the mighty fall.

Ugh... that sucks... I thought MS usually liked to let the devs own the IPs? Maybe Sakaguchi could buy it back?

Ruh?

Where did you get this idea? It's very much the opposite. They very rarely let devs keep IPs they fund as far as I'm aware.
