Cross-buy for 3DS -> Wii U (but not vice-versa) now possible only in Europe

"If you buy Squids Odyssey on Nintendo 3DS, you will be getting the Wii U version for free. Euro downloads just confirmed this."
This is the first videogame offering this cross-buy promotion on Nintendo consoles.

So, basically the three major steps Nintendo did in terms of digital purchase recently:

1) The NNIND link between 3DS and Wii U, that offered the chance to share your money budget for the eshop among the two consoles
2) Pushmo World with cross-promotion: if you purhcased one of the previous 3DS episode of this saga, you are allowed (for a limited period of time) to buy the Wii U episode with a 30% discount (if your 3DS and Wii U share the same NNIND)
3) Allow the cross-buy among the two consoles (probably once again, if your 3DS and Wi U have the same NNIND)

Happy about this. I hope more games will offer this possibility. Among all, I really hope Shantae and the Pirates Curse.

EDIT:
This is from NoE PR:

Squids Odyssey (The Game Bakers) - €12.99/£9.99
Squids Odyssey is a unique mix of action strategy and RPG: build your team of Squid heroes for epic turn-based battles against corrupted crabs and shrimps! Steev and the rest of the Squids are in danger! An infectious black ooze is corrupting their world. The band of unlikely heroes need to fight back to save their kingdoms!
Special offer:
If you downloaded Squids Odyssey on Nintendo 3DS, you can download Squids Odyssey from Nintendo eShop on Wii U for free! (Your Wii U and Nintendo 3DS must be linked with the same Nintendo Network ID.)

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Very nice !!!

Good, but I want to see Nintendo actually do this before I believe they're really getting onboard with it.

...wait what ? They dont have many games that are on WiiU and 3DS - they only titles would be Virtual Console games and they wont introduce Cross-Buy there this generation, because it would piss off the customer who already double dipped for games like SMB3.

Hopefully more games follow the "you bought this game on one platform, so you get it for free on another" path and it's not just a one off.

But What about this scenario?

You only have one 3DS. Buy that cross-gen game, get 3DS copy. Get Wii U later, and register. Then what happen to Wii U version? No Wii U version? or Cross buy happen?

That's the way to do it! Hopefully they will make it a feature for future games similar to things like SteamPlay

...hate me...
The gears were set in motion since the Nintendo ID unification, and this kind of stuff was mentioned before, I believe in a Nintendo Direct. There were already cross Wii U/3DS benefits (mainly discounts: get SMB3 on a console, download on the other for a discounted price, have Pullblox on the 3DS, get Pullblox/Pushmo World on the Wii U for a discounted price). This is a step further.

Orrr they could just do it and give some eshop credit to people who did double dip like me. Come on man dont make excuses for them.

Interested to see more of this even if I am reluctant to take advantage of it due to poor implementation of NNID on 3DS (locked to single country means you can't change countries to even download games bound to it but not available in the country you bounded to, in other words it does not safeguard my purchases).

I personally don't hold hope of Nintendo giving an 100% discount on VC games but hopefully they will try something good.

Good question. If we assume the cross buy is not time limited then we have to think how does it work. My assumption is it works by giving you a discount on the other version (the discount can be the full cost). This could go buggy during sales though...

Just because their is an option doesnt mean that every dev will use it - especially when they know fans will double dip if the game is amazing.

Definitely, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't have been awesome lol. Would have been nice for them to have the choice out right to begin with like on Sony's systems though. I'd have been happy with a "pay an extra 5 bucks for cross buy version".

Is shovel knight like this?

Nope :^l

Come on its not like i would handle it - but im just saying thats how Nintendo thinks. I just cant see them introducing VC cross buy now when the only mayor plattform 3DS/WiiU share are NES. And not all 3DS NES games are on WiiU, they might wait for their unified architecture successors.

You are absolutely right, i was just thinking this weekend that Shovel Knight would have been the perfect games to introduce Cross-Buy and how NIntendo can be so backwards when it comes to using their system synergies.

what if you buy the wii u version, do you get the 3ds version for free, or is it only the one way?

If not, not TRUE cross-buy ;)

I don't think it would honestly be that big of a deal. You'd piss off a decent amount of people but I think they'd be happy to know that going forward they won't have to deal with the mess that the eShop/VC currently is.

All I'm saying is that I would be cautious to claim any change in attitude regarding cross-buy with Nintendo until I see one of their games utilize it. This could totally be an anomaly and they just ignore it since this game isn't coming from them.

Nonetheless, this is good to see.
