Shops are saying (Bic Camera, Gamesmaya...) they will open early on thursday to avoid possible congestion caused by Youkai Watch 2 launch.

If it works how is it not suited?
Low resolution, small screens for an mmo with multiple enemies and characters on screen at the same time all moving on their own, potential lag due to the 3ds wifi/tethering, and the small touch screen of the 3ds being used for a lot of inputs that are typically done with a computer keyboard or much larger gamepad. These are my initial questions about DQ X on the 3ds.

Oh? Does that mean you'll actually have time to take some line pics, since stores will open a bit earlier?

Pretty good news if big shops are expectings lots of buyers. I can't wait for the preliminary reports. We still don't have any for shipment, right? I remember we got some for Pokémon and MH4.

But the strong typhoon is coming across Japan this Thursday and Friday. Maybe we won't see any line due to the bad weather.

On my way to school i'll check the main Bic Camera shop close to my place :)

Also, Tsutaya's report says one million is possible first week.

So by necessity are we reasonably expecting DQXI is probably going to be on multiple consoles, PC and mobile in Japan?

While I don't think it's implausible that Dragon Quest XI will be multiplat, as many of Square Enix's games are these days, I should note that it's not a service-game.

Well, at least I'm assuming it isn't. It could end up being an MMO or f2p title or a title with very significant post launch DLC and microtransactions a la Destiny, but I'm just assuming it's a co-op game a la Dragon Quest IX.

If I'm wrong, then yes I'd assume it would definitely be on as many platforms as possible.

So I might pick up Bravely Default soon, but can someone explain what it is that sucks about chapter 5-8 without spoiling anything?

In tokyo it arrives on Friday, but the worst part is in the south today and tomorrow. It will lose all its strength when it arrives here.

The game shifts the focus away from main plot progression to boss fights and side stories. The boss fights are very good, and the side story content is okay, but everything else around that starts to feel pretty repetitive and stretched thin.

We don't know yet what the lag is like, whats it like on the smartphone version? The xl screeens aren't really very small and I'd also imagine it'll be frankenstick compatible

Of course the game could turn out awesome on the 3ds but my first thought when I heard this news wasn't that it's a match made in heaven. And there's the question of how much demand there is to play this game on the 3ds. I just don't see 500k or so people wanting to pay for streaming DQX on the 3ds.

Ah, thanks a bunch for the pics if you can take any. I really appreciate it.

And very good news for Youkai Watch... very good news indeed. Ready to eat crow for saying 1M on launch week was impossible ;)

***

By the way, for those interested, the full chart for my "leg-o-meter" (since we're already past Week 26, half the year has already gone by). It's based on Media Create, by the way (Top 20 chart).

However, please note that all data was entered manually, so there's probably a couple mistakes. Just did that to give you a general picture of the Japanese market.

This Dragon Quest is different since it's an MMO.
And it's already been released on 1/2 a dozen other platforms.

500,000 might even be a stretch in this case.

It's already on iOS & Android. I don't know if there's a tablet version, or how much the Japanese are into phablets, but in that sense, isn't an iPhone 4S for example much worse for this game in every regard except the resolution and the tethering? Your hands are likely in the way of the controls for example. Anyways...

Don't you need internet access for DQX mobile? Same would apply for the 3DS right?

Correct, this is actually a cloud computing game a la OnLive or Gaikai/PlayStation Now.

If you don't have an internet connection, effectively there is no game.

Would that be enough bandwidth for something like this?

I guess the video resolution is pretty small.
Dragon Quest X for mobile phones/tablets can be played via LTE connection, so it shouldn't be a problem. However, doing so will probably gobble up mobile data really quickly, making it impractical for those with low data limits.

Special dungeon in Youkai Watch 2 can only be unlocked if you have both versions of the game :(

It was actually announced during the YW2 Direct last week. But I'm pretty sure you just need the save data... can't you just borrow a friend's copy, save on your console, and the give the game back?

By the way, the Day 1 patch is apparently only needed for the first shipment, copies sold next week won't need it. Apparently, the first shipment had to be made before the bugs could be fixed.

(Credits to StreetsAhead for that tidbit).

By the way... no line pics for YW2? :(

None of my friends living near me own a Japanese 3DS :(

And Youkai Watch 2 releases tomorrow. Should have some good pictures from various blogs and tweets in about 12~14 hours from now when the stores have just opened. Might even get lucky and find some pictures online of people camping out the night before in the next 5~6 hours.

Should be fine, I've managed to play normal mmo's through tethering during off peak times, unless the 3G or 4g in Japan is significantly worse the bandwidth shouldn't be an issue. Peak times may be an issue though as the speed can really take a nosedive as expected.

So: what are the chances that the next Nintendo handheld will be a streaming device or use the same technology like DQX does for all games?

0%. It might have streaming tech built in, in addition to the usual handheld innards, but there's no chance they'd be stupid enough to pull an always-online handheld of all things.

cw_sasuke

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Kinda shocked that Smash Bros. can maintain its No. 1 position at amazon even with YW2 releasing tomorrow ( yes i know its sold out - still) - Smash Bros. 3DS will be huge.

Cheers for your thoughts. My guess (uninformed) would be that it would be unlikely to be an MMO since DQX is surely going to be maintained for a while I would assume. But I wouldnt be surprised to see elements of f2p design in the game, whether it is completely f2p is another issue though.
