Had a similar feeling with a show called Oggy and the Cockroaches.

Them scumbag roaches, man. Felt so bad for Oggy.

Man, I loved that show when I was a kid. I couldn't find it for years, I would google it every few months. I remembered it as the greatest show ever and then I found it and it was pretty boring. I should watch it completely some day. Loved it because there was not much speaking/dialogue.

Let's not pretend like they were both innocent, but Jerry would more often than not take it one step too far. I also agree with the post that said the best episodes were the ones where they both ended up happy.

I remember that episode. Tom agonizingly begging Jerry to sign the Certificate of Forgiveness, and be being a douche just grabs the pen and smears all the ink into Tom's face.

In Jerry's defense (never thought I'd type that lol), he ends up signing it in the end, but by then it's too late.

I think that's one thing Tom and Jerry got right, that all the other copycat "cat and mouse" cartoons never figured out. Those copies always make the mice the good guys, when in Tom and Jerry, either one of them, or both of them, could be in the wrong in the setup.

Old cartoons made me realize I have a thing for underdogs. Daffy,Tom, Wile E. Coyote, and Sylvester were all tragic protagonists in my mind.

Kinda opposite for me. I rooted for the bad guys in a lot. Like Inspector Gadget... he was an incompetent dope, his daughter Penny and that fucking dog Brain would always save the day at the last minute. I really liked Inspector Gadget show, but I pretty much hated the main character and rooted for his demise every episode.

Tom & Jerry has an interesting dynamic. There is no clear underdog. It should be Jerry, being smaller and natural prey to Tom. However, Tom is a bit incompetent while Jerry is smart and capable, which makes Tom an underdog. The show makes it pretty clear who the underdog really is, Tom, but makes you think twice about rooting for him since he sometimes does pretty devious things to eat try Jerry.

I've always hated Chuck Jones' Tom & Jerry cartoons. Awful design and they weren't as funny as the classic cartoons by Hanna & Barbera. (Those guys were geniuses, it's a shame their legacy got tainted by all the TV crap they started making after MGM shut down the film animation studio).
