It's kind of sad listening to Ryan from IGN getting all excited about the "parity". As if it's to be applauded that Bungie isn't taking full advantage of the PS4 hardware.

To be clear, I'm not suggesting there should be massive differences, but there should be clear differences with the amount of extra juice the PS4 is offering.

He obviously has console wars in mind judging by his follow up comment referring to "Graphical comparison's" as "fanboy war fuel"

Why he's even bringing it up, is ridiculous. Also boxing in Bungie to comment on his stupid console war question just comes off as childish. Mc Affrey seems traumatized.

Haha, my thoughts exactly. Ryan seems downright giddy in the video, but a few months ago he couldn't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p.

So you are telling to tell me that Ryan McCaffrey, also known as the person begging Phil Spencer to be the Microsoft E3 Press Conference Host on Twitter is giddy about something Xbox? Not a chance in Hell.

Someone should let McCaffrey know that there can still be a lack of parity even when two games on different platforms are running the same resolution and target frame rate.

That said, it did look and run pretty like much what I have played of Destiny on the PS4, though obviously the PS4 version we're playing is an older BETA build (the build they were playing in the video is a newer build of the game). Having said that, I think there are some minor IQ differences, for example, there's a fair bit of aliasing towards the end that I don't remember seeing in the PS4 version. Still, minor overall.

Of course there are.

The point I was making is that there are far too many posts from people who bring nothing but negativity to the conversation.

Let's be honest, this place is obviously very much Sony oriented, but threads like these bring out the worst from the worst.

Not sure I agree with your last statement. Over the past few weeks, as it's been clear Sony is behind on firmware updates, criticism has been consistently leveled against them.

You're relatively new here, GAF isn't made up of a hive mind, everyone has different preferences. When Sony was performing poorly at the start of last gen, many people were complimentary of Microsoft and its handling of the 360.

This may sound bitchy and fanboyy but I'll still say what I think about it.

The thing about parity is that, since the Ps4 is the more powerful console, its only achieved by either gimping the Ps4 version or putting considerably more effort into optimizing the XboxOne version of a game and in my opinion devs shouldn't go for parity but for the best they can do on either plattform.
Not saying they should've have tried to get 1080p on Xbox, I just think if the XboxOne can get this game to run at 1080p 30FPS, the Ps4 would've been able to run it at 60FPS maybe.
I already said it yesterday or so, Destiny doesn't look like a game thats pushing the Ps4. While it is very beautiful, thats mainly due to the artstyle and not any technical stuff.

The PS4 version is already gimped much more by the existence of PS3/360 versions. I am sure there will still be differences in effects, aliasing, etc. as simply running 1080/30 on both is not across the board parity.

Chris Tchou shouldn't have agreed with Ryan McCaffrey when he mentioned parity and graphics comparisons.

At the very least you'd expect things like LoD transitions, anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering and shadow resolution to be improved with the "extra GPU time" on PS4.

I hope you're aware that Sony is criticized on other departments like falling behind on the firmware and their lackluster support for Vita around here (And rightfully so).

Indeed. I can only imagine what this would have been like if it wasn't cross gen. I understand why they did it, but still...

They're already aware of that a console in 2014 that can't do 1080p is a joke and they're doing their best in order to achieve it. Including dropping Kinect.

I agree. Consoles that can't run every game at 1080p are a joke.
Hey, what resolution does BF4 run at on PS4 again? Watch_Dogs?

It makes me laugh how people like Ryan McCaffrey get paid to be a fucking 12 year old fanboy. Hilarious.

It's pretty much these kinds of posts.

I guess we only see what we want to.

Anyone could say the exact same thing about Colin Moriarty.

Do you know what confuses me? When parity is reached, people act like the PS4 is somehow gimped because of it. I wasn't aware the PS4 can go above 1080p

(well actually warning)

Lego Hobbit on PS4 actually does go above 1080p and uses downsampling to clean up IQ a bit. As I said in my last post, 1080p is not the ceiling of quality, even on console. Destiny has pretty good image quality, though it's aliasing is still worse than, say, Infamous Second Son's.

I think he means that the poeple who say the opposite of that statement should be banned, i.e this version should look worse.

Oh well, yeah, thats stupid.
Devs should always try to get the best out of the hardware.
But most comments here regarding that matter talked about not using Ps4s potential or gimping the Ps4 version, not that the XboxOne version shouldn't be 1080p.

I for one think Destiny would greatly benefit from 60FPS and I think it would be possible on Ps4.

I've spoken about parity before in other threads. This isn't like last generation where the PS3 was better than the 360 at some things and worse at other things (and vice-versa), to the point where - when everything was said and done - they ended up being very similar to each other. This time around the power gap between the PS4 and Xbone is much more significant and leaving those advantages on the table for the sake of parity is just unacceptable. Some people may not have an issue with that, and I can completely understand that viewpoint, but from my viewpoint this behaviour is something I'm not going to reward and throw money at. I have no problems voting with my wallet on this issue.

1080p != full parity. There are a LOT of ways other than resolution to hit a certain framerate. It's possible certain effects are toned down, for instance the PS3 version clearly has worse aliasing (not that the PS4 version is perfect), dreadfully low res shadows, no chromatic aberration (this is almost a feature), major pop-in.

Not saying the Xbox One version has any of these differences, but we probably wont' know what/if the differences are until there's a post-release Digital Foundry analysis. Also, even if they go full graphics parity, that means the PS4 version should have less trouble keeping up with the framerate. The game looks great on PS4 for a cross-gen game, I see no reason to grab the Parity pitchforks just yet.

It's also possible, as others have noted, that Bungie spend time enhancing the game rather then pushing the hardware as hard as is possible. Personally I'd rather have developers use the time the have to enhance the game experience rather then push the hardware to the limit. Not saying resolution/framerate don;t matter but I wish they weren't the primary focus.

You're limiting the definition of graphical parity to resolution only. The PS4 version should be pushed to its limits as long as it's locked at 30 fps. That should mean more effects, for one. Or better lighting. Or a host of other thgings. I guess the real difference will be seen and felt in framerate. If they both run identically visually (textures, aliasing, etc.) and hold the same framerate with no wacky resolution trickery, we will know the PS4 version got held back.

Destiny on PS4 will probably have extra graphical bells and whistles, despite both versions running at 1080p.

In fact, it's probably worse for Xbox One owners that this game is 1080p. IMO it would be better to scale the resolution back to 900p and keep frame rate solid and the graphical effects improved.

Notice how much better your post looks after I remove the pointless insult?

Framerate looks bad even with no action on the screen.

Framerate looked bad on my computer at work but I'll wait to see what it looks like in the run up to launch before I jump to other conclusions.

As an XBO owner I would take 900p with voice commands and Kinect gimicks over 1080p but Bungie wont bother. I did like it when Skyrim patched in the Dragon Shouts - kinda cool - and I hope more devs look into specific platform features after launch and subject to sales.

There's alot of the usual "gimped for parity" comments incoming in relation to this thread but we'll have to see how much of that comes to pass.

I think development in later stages on multi-platform is more about the time available to polish than deliberately taking the decision to "gimp" a version. It's timely to develop for 4 platforms. If the PS4 was always 1080p then why would it be "gimped" to match the XBO? Doesn't make sense.

[Insert that's why you should play games on a PC responses here]

While I'm sure that poster could have said it more tactfully, I'm not sure I understand where you're coming from. Ryan has shown himself to be incredibly unprofessional as far as Microsoft is concerned and deserves to be criticized. What does Colin have to do with anything? Didn't see him in the video.

Honestly, fuck parity. I don't mean in terms of graphics, but using the touchpad on the ps4. I want to be able to do things by swiping. Swipe down should instantly call my sparrow.
Agree with this completely, and yes they should use the Kinect voice commands on the Xbox as well if it helps streamline the menu's and allow players to get to stuff quicker and easier...

Already made a post about it on the Beta Feedback forums at Bungie as well: http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/66550351/0/0

Why does it even matter? It's going to be 1080p on the PS4 and it will look great, who cares?

While this is great news for a lot of folks, I understand why PS4 owners would be upset about parity with the Xbone, they bought a more powerful console and it's not their problem Microsoft gimped their console on purpose whithout giving a damn about their fanbase and stuff like this. I can't blame Bungie though, they have to scale things back for last gen consoles, I only hope the extra resources are used for a better IQ and a more stable framerate instrad of effects.

Yep, looks just like the PS4 version. Good thing too since I own both consoles but am getting the X1 version.

Edit: Why are people throwing a fit because it doesnt look worse than PS4? Grow up.

It sounds like they've been working around the clock on the XBO version with MS engineers. Maybe if Sony had also sent some engineers, they could have gotten more out of the PS4 version.

We don't know if the PS4 has been gimped yet, resolution is only a tiny part of the equation.

How does every XB1 thread turn into a PS4 thread about parity?

PS4 has nothing to do with the video shown

Pretty much the same question i asked in that COD AW thread, you know the one where the dev pretty much just said " hey xbox owners, we will make sure your version doesn't run like shit ok. Promise!" Then people got asspained about it for some reason.

So, how much of these resolution bumps are to do with the SDK update, and how much are to do with these Microsoft engineers going to Bungie to specifically help them out with optimisations? I heard about this once before on this forum too (not sure if it was regarding Destiny or another game). I wonder what the extent of support from this in-house development optimisation group is?
