Destiny: Only one area per planet

It was, yet people still bring it up as if the first game cost 500 million.

Also folks are remembering BL2 incredibly poorly in terms of the "size" of it. It was essentially 4 or 5 areas: The Ice level, The Desert, The Toxic Waste and the Jungle are the ones I remember. I might be leaving something out. To it's credit, there were places you could port to that were "in" the area, but not freely explorable.

For Destiny, who knows what:

Means in terms of content. They could be referring to planets pr specific sections of the planet.

I think you are misremembering:

Eridium mines
Bandit prison zone
Hyperion prison zone
Crystal caverns (the fridge)
Lava final zone caverns
Bandit stronghold and Hyperion stronghold
River washout
River town and surrounding areas
The other 4 zone types you already mentioned
Old west style town

Breh this, breh that, but Destiny's spawns work exactly like late 90's everquest, exact replicas spawn every X minutes in the same spots, sometimes you get a rare or an alternate spawn.

If you're happy with almost two decade's old design paradigms, the more power to you.
How would you handle areas that have already been cleared out by other players? It's a shooter, you need things to shoot.

Just going to throw in my 2 cents here.

I played through all the content in the beta minus the moon in 4 hours, assuming no exploration or grinding or PVP. Considering Old Russia has a bunch of locked doors, I'll assume there's at least another hour of content there. 5 hours times 4 zones of strikes/story alone is 20 hours of content minimum, which when you compare to the 10-15 hours of most popular FPS games, that's pretty damn good.

Get into PVP, the raids, grinding for loot, I could see this game easily hitting the hundreds of hours of playtime for me, and it's just so fun to play.

People really need to keep their expectations in check, this game was never going to be WoW.

Over 30 pages on TLoU shadows. Nearly that much on people getting their ridiculous expectations crushed. What will GAF freak out about next?

Our ridiculous expectations? Check out this preview by Kotaku:

It's also a sandbox world. You're free to move around and explore different planets or hang out in hub cities like Overwatch where you can find people gambling for better gear. There's a sandy Mars location and a snowy landscape of a buried city. Chicago is a swampland. Europe is a deadzone. Vines wrap around dilapidated buildings. The solar system is flecked with rubble and long abandoned fleets. You can fly through the rings of Saturn. The entire universe of Destiny—the solar system including the Earth, Moon, and Mars—is open to your expedition needs.

Please, tell us more about how having this vision shrunken down to five maps is our problem.

So you cancelled your preorder based on the fact that you had fun with the game and we have no real confirmation of how much content the game has? Bravo, sir.

No one has said that yet.

Calm down, dudes.

Bwahaha I always find pre-order cancel shaming hilarious. Games have no rights to your pre-orders and people shouldn't even be pre-ordering in the first place as it encourages them to lock more content behind it and push review embargo's further in front so they can take advantage of impatient people.

Why are you encouraging this practice, virtually no other entertainment industry pulls this shit to any great success. And yet here we are shaming someone for cancelling a pre-order.

Honestly, I don't think four zones is a big deal. Four Old Russia-sized areas would be about as big as your typical Elder Scrolls world, yeah? Maybe I'm overestimating it, but that sounds about right.

4 Old Russia zone would be small compared to just the overworld of Skyrim, not to many mention the dozen upon dozen upon dozen of indoor locals, caves, tunnel, underground etc.

Is it possible that another section of earth opens up after endgame? Seems like it could be one of the final places of the story and they might not want to spoil it.

this game is never going to have the content BL2 have pre-dlc, or even BL1, with a lot of guns, hundreds of quests, or dozens of characters with different personalities. i'm extremely disappointed with this news. and only one raid...

He cancelled his pre-order because he probably has a limited amount of money to spend it on games and decided to not commit to a game that might last as long as Bungie had been insinuating. Besides that it's just a pre-order. In a minute I can create one and cancel it on a website.

Think we are done here.

Bungie did a poor job actually saying what their game is. Remember prior to Alpha? How many dozens of times every few pages did you read, " but what IS destiny! I don't even know what this game is ! ".

Pure confusion all the way into Alpha

But when it is all said and done. Still buying the game.

Wow, so it's not as environmentally interactive as Boderlands(no poop piles to get junk loot/ ammo out of other small touches that help make the maps feel more lively) and it won't have as smooth transitions from mission to mission as BL? Wow, I just don't know, so Bungie is being Bungie, it's not really a huge shock to me but I am disappoint slightly.

Also Borderlands felt more like a real world as you actually could walk from A to B and the places that were inhabitated by non-enemy NPCs felt like real towns.

Did everyone forget about the "leaked" contract, which stated an aggressive release schedule of major new content every six months? From the way they've demonstrated the Beta, and the way they've talked about the game, this is the establishment of an infrastructure that will continue to constantly expand.

IIRC, the contract outlined a release schedule like this (my own speculation in parentheses):

6 months out: DLC (story missions, raid, crucible maps)

12 months out: Expansion (new locale)

18 months out: DLC

24 months out: Major Release

And then continues like this until reaching 4 major release.

This is not a "ship it!" scenario.

Yes, but was it necessary of him to post a picture of his pre-order cancellation?

I don't know, I thought old Russia was pretty big without all the blocked off areas. The maps on the other planets look even bigger. There could also be other areas we have not seen, I don't think its too far fetched to think that they have not shown every area so far. The final game looks to have enough content to easily sink 60+ hours into without completing everything. How is this not worth the asking price?

Sure that should be big enough, but it's filled with 5 golden chests and a few generic kill and collect quests.
Maybe the main problem is not the amount of content, but how it is presented. Take the story missions for instance, in a (mmo)rpg you are used to go out, find a quest, find the location, do the quest and go back. That means typical MMOs hide the actual 5 min quest with all the walking and talking around it. In Destiny, the actual quest is not that much shorter than in any other mmos, but it is missing the things around the quests.
You go in and out of missions with a teleport, thats why it feels shorter than the average rpg.

RIP in peace Destiny pre-order =(

Hoping reviews change my mind. I had quite a bit of fun with the beta.

I don't understand.. nice Journey avatar.

That's precisely why I cancelled it - I'm not going to blindly buy into something unless I am confident it will deliver. One area per planet is enough to have me concerned.

As I mentioned I will wait for the reviews and see what's in the final package. It's entirely possible I will still pick this up on day 1.

EDIT: this

He can always decide to purchase the game if it comes out and ends up having tons of content.

Well...

I don't think anyone can defend that :/

Maybe they decided to save some stuff for later expansions in order to make more money?
Yea, seems to be the case. I don't get the whole "vengeful consumer" thing about a game you don't have to buy. But this is very disappointing, and pushing me to only consider the game for the "GOTY" version. Shame.

You appear to be obsessed about Borderlands comparisons, which I haven't mentioned in any of my posts.

Reply to the points raised please, not with Borderlands comparisons.

I think the expansions pass add ons will just add more quests in existing areas but the rumours Comet add on late next year will be a full new area or two.

First tragedy, then farce.
So how many of you had issues with PSO back in the day with only 4 areas too?

That was what? 15 years ago almost?

I loved PSO, but this isn't feeling the same with the weapon drops. I don't get that gotta run get loot feeling like I was.

I'm still on board for the game, but this seems like it has about as much content as PSO and far less content than PSU which is what I was hoping this game would wind up being like.

Dunno, I was certainly expecting a fair amount more content than it seems like we are actually going to be getting. It might not be entirely fair, because it's more content than Titanfall has, but this is a game that is going to live and die by the PVE experience which means it's gotta step it's game up in that regard. I think the PVP is mediocre at best and honestly lean towards it being pretty bad. Without a solid PVP structure around it that means the games content that I care about is the PVE stuff, and I don't know how many times I will want to do the same strike.

If it's like PSO and I'm happy to beat Dark Falz 500+ times than the game will be fine. It will come down to the meta game being really fucking good to save the game at this point.

That changes things a lot for me and a few friends. I was always under the impression that there would be multiple areas on each planet. Even if there are let's say 3-4 other planets that is not a lot of content. Pretty disappointing. This has now gone from must have to a "maybe". :(

Oh please, no man's sky looks to have absolutely no depth in gameplay or world. As shallow as a puddle

Destiny seems to have less depth in its worlds from what I've seen so far tbh. You got a bunch of guys with guns just standing around waiting to be shot. With No Man's you've got local flora and fauna wandering about purposefully, and ships darting through the sky from what little we've seen. And at least in the gameplay department you can actually fly your ship.

I don't see this massive depth of world you're talking about with Destiny.

I enjoyed the Destiny beta a lot but Bungie has been deceiving customers with previews since Halo 2. Almost just as bad as Ubisoft. Can't believe it's happening again, only this time with actual gameplay areas that they'll charge us for later.

Didn't they want to give away the Halo 2 and Halo 3 maps but couldn't because MS wouldn't let them? Not that their independent, let's see how generous they really are.

I just hope there's lots to do in those areas. I'm not enjoying the PVP that they're offering so far, so I'm hoping the solo/coop portion of this game is pretty meaty.

Did anyone find the Crucible 'domination' mode to be poorly designed?.

Usually in 'domination' mode you will have three capture points A B C, with B being the most fiercely contested with it being near the centre of the map. I found the area you stand in to capture the point in Destiny to be very very small, and also very out in the open.

Usually in games which do 'Domination' modes really well such as Black Ops 1/2 and Titanfall, the B point will have a larger capture area, and it will also allow you to tuck in/hide a little. In Destiny I found I was a sitting duck, pretty much in the open, and normally with an enemy player standing a little way out and just shooting me to bits.

Having areas you can hide a little make for a better game, as anyone who is camping will have to head in to flush you out, rather than shooting fish in a barrel.

I'm not sure if this is how Bungie games normally play? as I haven't played any of the HALO series online.

This is coming from someone who has played hundreds of hours of 'Domination' modes in other games, and I've never had poor map layout in the past.

I hope that Bungie can fix these issues, or are they the norm in Bungie games?
