From the live performance event tonight:

The scene takes place at Tommy dam one night 4 years later. Joel talks about how Tommy trying to get Joel hitched to a girl named Esther. El lies acting fairly distant, probably conflicted about joels lie. Joel then said he has a special gift for her and busts out a guitar. Then he plays a special song for her. Then he gives her guitar and promises to teach her. The scene ends with her striking a note on the guitar
Neil also said before the scene is a goodbye to Joel and ellie.

edit: another gaffer's impressions
So the big surprise wasn't TLOU movie teaser, UC4 gameplay, or a freebie to take home. It was a deleted scene acted out. It was from AFTER the final scene in the game. In the scene, Ellie is in her room at Tommy's place, listening to her iPod/CD player etc. Joel enters the room and wants to talk to Ellie. He brings out a guitar and sings a song(Troy Baker played the guitar AND sang in the voice. Fucking amazing). Joel shares a joke that he tells Ester, a woman he's now dating from the camp, with Ellie. "What's the bad thing about eating a clock? It's time consuming." They laugh, Joel leaves the room, and Ellie strums a string. End scene, end journey...perhaps.

Also, we got a free copy of Gustavo's recent CD and the cool German exclusive steel book. What an amazing night. :)

Neil said that this will never ever be released, and asked that no one film it. It was pretty cool.

I was there as well. I for one did not hear him say that the scene was 4 years after the ending. I'm 85% sure it isn't, I think it takes place rather soon after the game actually. Ellie is still distant after the events of the game. Etc, etc and everything else he said was spot on.

Neil said that this is kind of a close on the journey.

I was about to rage that this was gonna be a prelude to the sequel, but Neil saying this was a goodbye to the duo was a huge sigh of relief.

At least they have the self-control to not butcher the first game's characters with a sequel.

4 years later is a really specific time for something that is meant to be a single scene goodbye to the characters. Couldn't the same scene take place days after the ending of the game and have the exact same effect?

Unless this is part of something bigger.

Boo I wanted a direct sequel with Joel and Ellie. Ellie being the main character in this one. Still ready for whatever ND gives us with the next installment of the franchise.

Yep, as I said in the other thread, Sony is not letting this huge IP die after a single game at all. There is a reason why they are making a movie based on it too.

I think it's meant to convey that this is a "good-bye" to the characters, setting it years later is gives a snapshot into their new future lives and sorta kills off the idea of a direct sequel.

That epilogue is ultra cheesy. Really wanted Ellie to be lead in the next game, hope she still is.

P.S. Add Spoiler warning in OP.

Don't worry guys, right after the scene ends Ellie kills off Joel thus ending their journey. Then TLoU 2 begins with just Ellie :p

I'm conflicted on if I want Joel/Ellie to return in the sequel. I'd rather the game just focus on Ellie as the protagonist if they don't bring in new characters.

I'm glad for the confirmation that there will be no more of Joel and Ellie. Their journey is complete.

It says epilogue scene in the title. You'd have to be special to click if you're trying to avoid spoilers.

Well unless Bruce was trolling they said it was a send off for these characters

I don't think anything is decided in the long-term yet. Sounds like something to please the hardcore fans and add a little something to The Last of Us IP as it currently stands (they've been working on this project for a long time since the original release) before they move on to the next thing. A lot of people who have played the game will never hear about this extra scene, especially the people who won't even care about the Last of Us until playing it for the first time on PS4.

Naughty Dog knows that if it figures out a good way to continue the story and proves itself in a new trailer, we will approve. It's not exactly impossible.

I figured they wouldn't even be that close 4 years later. I assumed Ellie would just go off on her own, away from Joel.

Would you really just leave the one person who's kept you safe this whole time? They've gone through so much shit together. Even if she did know he's lying, I really doubt she would leave him so soon.

I think she's as attached to him as he is to her, for better or worse.

ND already said it's a franchise and they're a two franchise devs now so this isn't news. We just don't know who's in it, where it's set, when, etc.

Please Neil and Naughty Dog, dont re-visit Joel or Ellie. Their story is near perfect the way it is and ended.

Go with something new, in a new setting perhaps, with new characters that will allow you to do different things story wise. I cannot wait to see where they go with TLOU2

I don't know if when he says a goodbye to Joel and Ellie, he means both of those characters, or just them being together as a duo.
