If it's being adapted out of order, that actually explains a lot about what was wrong with ep2. It really felt like a random episode from later on which was suddenly inserted right after the first episode. Ep3-4 in comparison feel so much more natural in terms of development.
I feel (and hope) that ep.2 was just an outlier because they've done a good job meshing different chapters in 3/4 episodes so far.

So I guess I've been sort of the center of today's discussion for awhile and that's a little weird for me, and I feel bad for the people who already hate me because now they don't get a reprieve from me even when I'm not talking, but I guess I should take a quick minute to weigh in. I guess.

I kinda feel like the community has been trying to destroy itself lately. Like, Duckroll came out with a new rule that I feel is really common sense and every few days that rule has to be brought back up and wrung to death in discussion and it's sad. Worse still, though, is the need for any of these discussions about things that aren't really about anime.

I came to AnimeGAF and got into anime because I needed a way to let off steam in between homework assignments at school. As such, the allure of the place has always been to me that it be fun. In the name of preserving that fun, I've tried to improve and hold my tongue. AnimeGAF has frequently seen a bad side of me because, I admit, I frequently used the community as a means to letting off my steam.

I really don't blame the people out there in the community who think ill of me anymore, though, because I've come to realize I really was sort of a nuisance for a long time. Apparently, I still am, heh.

But I digress. I think it's important that the community be a place where we can have fun, yes, but I think sometimes that fun needs to be reigned in. I'd like to point to PersonaGAF as an example of what I mean. Today, Caladrius posted a goofy list of pairings and we all laughed for a few hours. Then people commented that we needed to get back on topic, and as best as I can tell, we did. There was no arguing, no wringing of hands over what the topic meant, nor any sort of ongoing war over what should belong. We policed ourselves and got back in line because we all knew that the person who said it was right.

It's okay to have fun. Sometimes things go off topic for a bit and that's funny. That's natural. But it's wrong to derail things at the expense of the actual topic. After a laugh's been had, it's time we got back to talking about anime. I mean, come on guys, it's not like there isn't a vast world where we can carry on off topic things without doing it here.

As to long posts and short, a balance of the two is always great. I'm not doing it to get awards. I enjoy it when people do read them, yes, but I enjoy it because I enjoy writing and enjoy being read. When I did ridiculous things while watching shows like Geass, it was sort of an in-the-moment thing that I found fun, but I can only imagine how grating it was to others. And as others made that clear to me, I realized I was impeding the fun of others and sought to find a way to do both. Maybe not everyone should have to change, but I thought it best if I tried to. I don't think anyone is asking that every post be a long inspection of every episode, but we could do with fewer non-sequitur posts about "in the moon-a and in the june-a". It's also embarrassing guys that there are people even capable of describing a period of this community as "the age of the lewd."

To that end, I don't think anybody wants this to no longer be a fun community where people can come together and chat about anime, but I think that there are people who would appreciate that this thread be a fun place where we still talk about anime and spend less time bitching about how we can't post shots of naked women with wild abandon. I mean, come on guys, some of the shit said in here causes the mind to reel.

As one closing statement, it's been really weird having my name and posting patterns thrown around all day. I'm not really hurt. Indeed, I expect that some of you meant only praise for me with what you said, and I will take the good intent over the perceived insult any day, and thank you for that. But I don't want to be the centerpiece of a community debate. But I do think we could all stand to remember that on the other side of those avatars and nametags are real people with real problems and real lives. All of us have something we can contribute to making this place great, and all of us have things we want out of this thread. We can find a way to make it work, but first we need to stop making it harder on ourselves than it really, really needs to be.

Well look at these drama again, its been awhile.. LMAO

If I can adding something, if you guys want the topic filled with more relevant post, I think we can start with less insular thread title that giving vibe that we can freely naval gazing into the thread.

Its job is done and per custom we're just waiting for dresden to adjust the thread title as he has done all my OTs.

But the thread title got me to start watching Ojamajo Doremi, which I'd never have begun otherwise.

The thing about Barakamon is it's not following the manga faithfully so there are some things that feel off, i.e.
In the hospital scene where the glasses girl was fuming the audience was not aware of her "hatred" for yaoi whereas in the manga that hospital scene happened after her encounter with Handa in ep.3
Exactly. That Tama resentment of having 'fujoshi' thoughts on episode 2 is what made it obvious to me too, and it wasn't even something slightly hinted at previously, later directly explained already on episode 3 in a moment it would have given the context necessary for Tama's character to not only be fun but directly to make any sense in the situation.

Duckroll speaking the absolute truth. Duckroll, Dresden, I'm sorry about my insult in the past, I truly am.

I try my best to read as many impression posts as possible, but even then, I don't really post about them because there isn't much that I can really say that would feel up to the quality of them.

I feel the same way. When there is a show that I truly feel strongly about youll know because Ill go into deeper discussion about it. But with many shows I just dont have a suitable response or discussion topic so I dont want to quote a huge post just to say nice work. The problem is that without the visual feedback loop of responses I think people just assume it was skimmed over. I guarantee that people do read over and appreciate these posts.

Oberstein may be one of my all-time favorite characters in an anime. It was really easy to get caught up with a lot of characters in LoGH. The friendship between Mittermeyer and Reuenthal maybe had to be my one most favorite thing about the series. The comradery between Yang's top crew had me literally laughing out loud.

Oberstein is a fantastic character. Apart from that voice of his, what I love most about him is
that slight ambiguity in his actions. Does he act for his own ambitions, or does he honestly want to help Reinhard? Even his final act before his death reflects this ambiguity; was it just a mistake that he was there, or did he really want to protect the kaiser? We don't know for sure, but that makes him more interesting!

Reuenthal was my favorite character in the series. Wakamoto did a really great job voicing him; that has to be my favorite role of his.

Clearly we should all just listen to sonicmj1 talk about Japanese elementary school students trying to put fingers up his butt. That should unite all members of AnimeGAF. lol

Yup, like I said before they've done a great job so far and looks to be capable of keeping the quality of the show, but they really goofed on episode 2. I still enjoyed that episode but even I can see the validity in the complaints people had.

Personally, I like them. The "Making of LWA" one was excellent.

Well it's just that sometimes my posts can become brutally long and I fear that it's too verbose. Posts that are too long can impede conversation too and judging by the fact that all my videogame threads are almost always DOA, I should probably make it more accessible to facilitate feedback and commentary.

In short, it feels like I'm pontificating sometimes despite me just trying to analyze stuff to death.

Puchimas 17-38

This Puchimas binge isn't good for my mental health. I've got those ending themes both stuck in my head and I feel like I've probably been missing some things because I'm just noticing Narukasan is not just saying "Kaa-Kaa" but actually saying her name in parts like a pokemon would.

What kind of posts are you looking for? I'd love to contribute in some way. I'm about to write up my final impressions of Elfen Lied. It's hard to do after I already wrote a pretty good summary of the series on the fourth episode and nothing has really changed since.
I'm not sure about how big to make the scope of it. Wouldn't want the barrier of entry to be too high but at the same time I wouldn't want it to be a slightly slimmed down version of the threads. Essays (and they don't have to be super in-depth) on a series as a whole would be good to start.
I think this is a great idea. I've thought about going back and reading specific posts by people, but just trying to find them is a bit of a struggle. I'd be more than willing to help update it if it's needed.
Cool, shoot me a PM if you have a Tumblr account or when you do.

If this happens, some things would need to be decided on before involving too many people. Like a tagging system and how to format the posts on the blog.

Nafe, if you are reading this I could use your post(s) that collect every AnimeGAF thread.

I agree with that. Sometimes very wordy post can be very intimidating to people who have more fluid thought patterns. I think perhaps splitting a long review up into portions might be easier to follow and respond to in sections rather than presenting everything in one enormous post. It also gives a review several chances to be read and responded to rather than all or nothing.

So... didn't you promise us a write up for Mr. Shinkai's A Gathering of Cats? And don't worry, being a one-minute short you shouldn't end up with that much of a long post. :)

I don't think length on its own is a problem at all. The one thing you might want to look out for is how roundabout some of your discussion points can get. I've noticed that you tend to like saying [x] and then in the sentence right after that you introduce a counterpoint to [x] and then express confusion as to whether your original point was right or wrong. That just makes it messy and confusing. :)

It's probably much better to think about an issue and draw a definite conclusion first, then go from there. Otherwise it sounds like you're arguing with yourself.

I on the other hand believe Oberstein
is unflinchingly loyal, although this becomes loyalty to the new dynasty over the Kaiser at some point. I get the feeling he was pretty selfless, putting more value in his theory of politics far more than himself. I liked the line Bittenfield said about Oberstein using the fact he isn't motivated by self-interest to justify anything.

Also I'm going to spend the rest of the evening looking up funny screen captures, this series has too many.

I'm really glad I'm not alone on this. I saw it on release weekend and was crushed.

And then it released in NA and everybody apparently loved it and I was insane.

I don't wanna be alone. OTL
Given how hard to please I am, I probably won't like it much.

I feel partially responsible for the shit storm now since I made that joke. Corvo don't know if it matters now but I was only kidding I enjoy your regular posts. I enjoy the time here much more when it's good times and discussions.

I will give my two cents if anybody wants the change to get bigger bills though. I feel left out at points since I have hard time remembering names as it is. I can only recognize a couple of anime industry names so that as well prevents me from taking part in some of those industry discussions. Heck I don't even know what 'sakuga' means so I just make awkward jokes. I can take part in more well known industry discussions such as Miyazaki, watanabe, big names like those.

My bad puns are a cry for help. Help me AnimeGAF. Help me :'(

Yeah, there's a lot of quotes or pictures from LOGH that are really funny out of context. "Dogs eat dog food". :p

Is there any great list of differences between the Legends of the Galactic Heroes novels and OVAs? I'm having a hard time finding it. It blows my mind Dusty was an anime original character.

I really wonder what the new adaptation is going to be like. They could really screw it up. On the other hand, there's a lot of aspects of the OVAs that could be greatly improved, such as a presentation of battles.

Im sort of in the same boat as you, im so new here I don't even know how to properly use 'uguu~~' (is there even a way?). Im not deep into the industry as I have just scratched the surface and haven't even watched a lot of classics.

I recognized that I was posting too much last thread and am aiming to increase to quality of my posts here instead of quantity. I do like meta discussion as long as it isn't zero value just because it gives a sense of community that we can talk among ourselves, but at the same time I know there are members here that expect a certain level of posting quality. So I really don't know what to do moving forward. It just seems like we are always at war with ourselves because of some split in the community.

Dirty Pair 3

I agree with Yuri; that Sydney guy is lame and I'm kinda hoping that he doesn't become some recurring character and some romantic interest for Kei.

This "King" dude was really incompetent though. I love how he thought he was bringing in the Dirty Pair and make them fight for their lives for the entertainment (and gambling purposes) of his guests, and then it just boiled out of control within minutes and he wasn't doing shit. Bond villain he is not.

Service! Service! Service! Yao and everyone else spends a good portion of all three of these episodes wandering around in a swimsuit of some sort, and the comedy remains as strong as ever. The slasher movie nature of the island episode, Yao becoming the "Miami Man" and the beauty contest were all really great. The start of episode 9 stands out as a lovely little piece of physical comedy. The way the camera starts on the sniper about to pull the trigger and kill Yao in her sleep, then cut to him standing a few inches away from her bed, and the Looney Tunes-like sequence that ensues of Yao sleepwalking through all the assassins. I love it when anime gets physical comedy like that. Glad to see Nagisa return as Yao's archrival too. She swore revenge, and is totally delivering on it. And for an anime, I'm always surprised when little Western references sneak in, such as the Bruce Willis look alike in the watermelon bomb episode or the beauty contest judge being based on James Brown.

The mix of Japanese-style comedy, Western references (and several Japanese ones - Yao's dad is nearly permanently doing the Gendo pose) and disregard for anything on the part of Yao feels like the product of its time, but a lot of the jokes, broad as they are, are still holding up even now.

Last thread someone posted a magical girl GIF (might have been from that PreCure show?) and she was dancing around with a scepter of some sort and there were explosions everywhere.

1. Does anyone have the GIF still?
2. If anyone knows what im talking about, could you tell me the shows name?

If it helps I think the girl had yellow hair. Im sifting through the last thread and hopefully someone can answer me before I scan 400 pages.

Sucks at poetry
So the lady and I are sitting here watching Zankyou no Terror and a startling admission comes to light. She hasn't seen Samurai Champloo. This isn't terribly surprising I suppose, but given our past fandoms over the years, it's a wonder how this flew under the radar. Obviously a rewatch is now in effect, and we are about 8 or 9 episodes in. I've seen the series twice, but I forgot just how fun it really is, given its episodic nature. It's incredibly well animated and consistent as well. The art style hasn't aged much despite it being 10 years old now, and the hip-hop inspired influences give the atmosphere a refreshing lift (RIP Nujabes).

On that subject, there was a common writing cliche I noticed popping up in my impressions that I've been trying to correct: "[Positive statement], but [negative statement]," or vice versa. For example, from my Spice and Wolf episode 1 impressions:

Lawrence's interactions with Chloe don't seem like they'll be very meaningful to the plot in and of themselves. But they say a lot about his character without telling us directly. It doesn't seem like he gained anything directly from taking on an apprentice, which says he's kind-hearted. But he also refuses her business proposition, which shows that he's cautious and experienced. It's hard to call it efficient when the dialogue itself doesn't really lead anywhere, but I like that they're actually showing things without doing a lot of telling.

That paragraph has two negative statements each offset by positive statements (that are meant to be stronger). As much as I want to defend it (and there are times where it's appropriate), that style makes the writing feel weaker and less decisive. As I write impressions recently, I'm trying to make sure to stick to a single theme or idea with each paragraph. That way, the reader can take a clear message from my words, instead of being confused about where my emphasis lies.

I hope that thinking has improved my recent Log Horizon impressions.

Eureka Seven – Final Impressions

I’m usually a bit apprehensive to shows that are 50 episodes long. Especially when it comes to fantasy adventure or mecha shows. I always get the impression that it’s going to be one long drawn out arc with little progress and filled to the brim with filler. In some cases that works for me, like how I had fun with GaoGaiGar, but in other cases, it doesn't.

Eureka Seven, is not that kind of show. Looking back on it now, I see that it really needed to be 50 episodes long and not two 25 episode seasons-

Oh crap.

I just had the horrible thought of what could have possibly happened if SUNRISE made this show. Probably would have been a disaster of Gundam 00 S2 proportions.

But getting back on track,
there is a lot of great character development that goes down in this show, and that’s only one of the show’s shining areas. Lots of the main characters come off as mean-spirited at first, and I was waiting for the big: “We screwed up and we have to say we’re sorry moment”. Which happened, yes for one of the characters, but by the time it did though, I understood that all this antagonism was coming from rational people in an irrational world.

And Eureka Seven’s world really IS irrational. I'm not going to say much, but don’t expect what goes down there to be the happiest thing you’ve ever seen. But that’s not the point here. The point that I'm trying to establish is that these characters grow on you. Even the kids I found to be tolerable after some time passed. Yeah! Apparently these three little buggers are supposed to be the biggest sore thumb that this show has and never improve at all but they didn't bother me that much! Not saying I really liked them, just saying that they didn't bother me a lot.

Bottom line, this show has great characters that go through a ton of development and I’m glad this show is as long as it is.

Now, for the animation.

This show is beautiful. The fact that all the giant robots in this show surf in mid-air allows for some really amazing visuals and for some really stellar battle scenes. And speaking of giant robots, are you expecting this show to be all about robots punching and kicking while the pilots yell some super hot-blooded yells? Well guess what, that’s second on the show’s priority list! For Eureka Seven, it’s Romance > Mecha action. It’s still there and largely prominent enough, but compared to the sheer amount of romance this show has it feels a lot like just a thing on the side. The mecha are the fries to this show’s big hamburger of love and this is in no way a bad thing. I also should mention how much I love the designs of these things. Particularly the design of theEND. That thing is so cool.

As for the music, now, OP Ranking:
OP2 > OP1 > OP4 > OP3.

The OST definitely had its good pieces as well. Not much as say, TTGL’s did, but good enough for me.

In conclusion, this is an amazing show with great characters. Everybody should watch this. But avoid the movie and sequel at all costs. Just pretend they don’t exist.

Now that this is out of the way, I now have to watch Doremi for Hito so he'll watch Black Jack and GTO for Woofington so he'll watch Kino's Journey and Gunbuster.

Don't know if we're thinking of the same chapter, but there are multiple text heavy chapters in both the Chimera Ant Arc and the arc going now that will not be adapted.

Has that chapter been covered in the anime yet? I've missed some episodes here and there and I'm curious to see how they would have handled it or just had a bunch of still shots with the narrator talking over them.

End of the Chimera Ant arc. It was covered in like 2 minutes in the anime.
