Nah, it's just a stupid Love Hina remake, but now with VIOLENCE!

Well I was thinking more on the lines of making GAFers watch it rather than the producer's intention. I mean I haven't seen anyone watching it for years and now there's been about 73 reviews for it in the span of two thread.

Y'know I didn't say it the first time but it doesn't seem cool to have a pic of a girl with her limbs severed embedded in a post. It's pretty disturbing even if it isn't extremely gory. I'm not a fan of boobage, but if that can't be posted this probably shouldn't be either.
Doing so would acknowledge that Elfen Lied could actually have a little potency and we can't allow that.
The first season looked mighty great I thought, the 2nd season will trapped in early 00's digital ugliness no matter what.
The first season is an upscale too as far as I have read, despite it having been traditionally animated.

Elfen Lied Final

I give this anime a 2/10 only for the soundtrack. While watching this I found nothing redeemable about any of it. After every episode I thought to myself, "Do I really want to watch more of this shit?" and it was a slog to get through. Never have I watched an anime where I actively thought while watching that I just want it to stop.

Wait until you see what I got for you next :p

Is Elfen Lied trying to become the new School Days?

Nah. It's not hilariously dumb, just normal dumb.

Changed it to a less gory image. I really don't want to go back looking for something that demonstrates the violence but is not heavy on the gore.

I can't wait...

Cool, female shaggy. This is the female version of Welcome to the NHK but with legit friends rather than a talking fridge. The opening song was fantastic, all of those references touched my nerdy heart. Hell I got super excited to see someone other than KOEI recognize The Romance of the Three Kingdom.

I was also reminded last night that I need to continue Space Bros. I randomly stopped post-exam (mid 30s).

It's just me and phoenix that's watched it. He got me to watch it so I thought it would only be fitting that he watched it too.

Princess Jellyfish is pretty good, all the mamga chapters are references to movies it was nice to see it in the OP.

Continue with Space Brothers.

To my to-watch list this goes.

Yeah. Like I saw somebody wrote once, if you watch the first 5 minutes of Elfen Lied you've basically seen what it's all about.
This is surprisingly accurate.

The Big O, Episode 26

Wonderful. I started picking up more film this year so I could get a better handle on things when watching anime and it's always so interesting to see how heavily one work can influence another. I suppose I'll keep in mind that I should give Metropolis a go before the next time time I watch The Big O which I've wanted to get back to since this post in 2012.

I know! I was showing my friends the first episode, and I forgot how great it was. I feel so moon as I watch it.

To my to-watch list this goes.

That was the sole reason I decided to watch it. Anything remotely close to NHK deserves my attention.

a) It really is anything but the female version of NHK. In fact, and I don't think it's a spoiler to say this, it's a show that unfortunately amounted to nothing other than a commercial for the manga.

b) Space Bros gets immeasurably better after that point.

It was much easier to watch it weekly with everyone else. Though you do have an advantage of not having to wait for a certain storyline to conclude because they stretched it over so many months.

Space bros is a real slow burn. Like I'm in the 40s and I have yet to go back. I will eventually I just have so much other shit to do.
I'd almost say start at the moon arc, although I guess you're almost at that point.

Heck, I think you could almost watch the recap episodes and start with the second year. That's where it definitely hits its stride.

I imagine it's probably not a good show to marathon. Watching it week to week for two years, the pacing rarely bothered me.
The only thing good about Elfen Lied is the OP.
Being good isn't the same thing as being entertaining.

I don't think I can agree with that.
I just don't think much of School Days. Maybe all of the forced overreactions I've seen in this thread over the years have left me bitter.

I was doing that until the capsule story line around ~11 and figured I wouldn't have the patience for months in it.

Or... you could watch films to enjoy films by themselves. Like anime, you know.

Sometimes you people are so otaku. :p

That was an arc that was sooooo badly paced. I think the fact that they basically redid the arc in the second year but that it came off much better shows the growth of the mangaka over time.

It's another lapsed hobby as I used to watch so much then just stopped for whatever reason. I was just glad to have some sort of reason to pick it back up. It more or less took over as the primary hobby this year.

Unsure if I made the right decision or if I just delayed the pain.

That's a bummer. From afar, it reminded me of that show so much. How is the manga of Jellyfish then?

I actually loved the exam portion of Space Bros, but reading that it gets even better, I now have to shuffle Hunter X Hunter, LOTGH, and Space Bros. Farewell, Social Life.

You can watch films to appreciate other films. Hell, all of the expressive arts tend to draw from each other and some have had notable impacts on culture and society, which is why literature is a part of a standard education.

TLDR: This anime is bloody awful. If you have any intention of watching this look at yourself in the mirror then slap yourself on the face.
Very good review . Pretty spot-on.

You've nailed it ! Except that i don't even like the soundtrack.

Nah, it's just a stupid Love Hina remake, but now with VIOLENCE!

Please don't insult LOVE HINA . it doesn't deserve this.

I never read the manga, but the anime was a let down in my eyes.
Space Bros is worth watching through anyway!

Everything after the moon arc is great, even if it is basically From Earth to the Moon x October Sky x Apollo 13 x whatever space thing you can think of. lol

Eh, I still liked the song either way. I'm a sucker for Latin.
I'll agree that the song was okay but when taken in the context of the anime it comes off as pretentious crap that's trying to achieve a deeper meaning where there is none.

In the end I just judge by the music because in the long run that's likely all I'll be consuming.
In that case Ergo Proxy best anime ED of all time! (I'm such a hipster)

Thanks. This is the first long, serious review I've done for anything. Hopefully I get better at it.

Love Hina is lower on the totem poll if anything. At least Elfen Lied is a funny kind of bad.

I look at anime OP/EDs with both the animation and the music under consideration. That being said, neither were good.

Really? While the cod-classical song is perhaps an acquired taste (and a little pretentious, perhaps, given the content of the show itself), I've always admired the OP's visuals for the re-appropriation of Gustav Klimt artwork. That's my kind of reference porn :p

Love hina at the time broke boundaries ( IMO )
Problem is that it hasn't aged well

No.

Elfen Lied is funny bad, and bad bad.

I understand the "so bad it's good" ( heck i recently watched blade and soul ) but elfen lied isn't even near this category.
Everything that remain in my memory is "Avoid at all cost" so IMo it's not even worth the light jokes at how stupid it is.

Aww I liked your avatar. I remember watching elfen lied the day before one of my exams. Was a deep experience (at the time). Haven't seen that many deaths in an anime before

I think I got a B

Yeah I'm in the moon arc (maybe I'm further then). It's the most exciting the show has been for sure. I really enjoyed the characters, easily the best aspect of the show. Just have to eventually get back to it but I have so many western shows my friends want me to catch up with the latest season (tmnt, house of cards, archer, sons of anarchy, justified, the bridge) and finish the wire that it'll be a while.

"Uguu" is just an infantile vocalization used by a character in the show Kanon. It's been mocked as a prototypical example of what's bad about anime.

As for moe, it has no meaning that's been nailed down, but it's largely to do with the reaction invoked by characters that are weak or incompetent to the point of cuteness and needing protection.

moe just generally denotes anything cute. well by my definition it does. It can be a strong character too.

Hau~ is from Kanon too.

You got Uguu~, Hau~, and Ahaha~, and Hae~

Good god thats so adorable.

Penguindrum is bad watch something good instead

i actually want to revisit penguindrum sometime since it wasn't all bad, it more collapsed under itself

PenDrum is really fun but it did suffer from Shangri-la syndrome.

Elfen Lied Final

EP1 | EP2 | EP3 | EP4 | EP5 | EP6 | EP7 | EP8 | EP9 | EP10 | EP11 | EP12 | EP13

Where to begin... I already did a rant on how awful this anime was for my episode four impressions but I suppose I should wrap things up with my final impressions.

Elfen Lied translates from German to Elven Song. Elves are seen in old Germany as evil and deceptive creatures that take advantage of humans. In some Scandinavian lore elves whisper to children as the murder them. They were creatures to be feared and were nothing like the modern day interpretations such as Legolas. However, the mutant creatures found in this anime are nothing like the elves of German lore so this title makes absolutely no sense.

Kouta is our lead protagonist in this story. He is the hero this anime deserves but not the one it needs. He is our watchful protector, a dark knight. He is first introduced as the thoughtful guy who takes naked pink haired girls with cat ears who can only make one noise home to look after them. Not long after that, he is accepting girls into his home left and right. He sees this as a way to make up for his dark past... where is sister and father are brutally murdered
by the same pink haired girl he takes in.
Not only has he completely forgotten who murdered them but he then falls in love with the one who murdered them after remembering who had killed them. This moron is crazy and his personality is as likeable as a wet paper bag. He is so drab and dull and most of his dialogue consists of yelling out pink haired girl's ridiculous name. He has to be the worst protag in any anime I have seen so far.

Yuka is Kouta's cousin who been in love with him since childhood (wtf?!). When they both first been pink haired girl she is not only eager to help her but encourages Kouta to take her home with them. Afterwards any time pink haired girl shows any form of attraction or desire towards Kouta she becomes extremely jealous and takes it out on him physical or emotionally. Not content with being jealous over one girl, she is the one who pushes Kouta to continue to take more into his home. Her character infuriated me as she continued to do the "take them home then get mad" bit throughout the whole series. Other than the over the top jealousy she is complete fool who will do anything for dull protag and declare absolutely hideous lines like the one above. If she had been killed instead of Kouta's sister this anime would be better for it.

Pink haired girl is the last "main" protagonist of the series. She is introduced as an absolute killing machine with no emotion and murders without discretion. As soon as she leaves her prison, she is reduced to snivelling idiot who can only make one noise. She is completely incapable of doing anything herself and depends on protag to get changed, feed herself and bath herself. However, when she takes a small bump on the head she suddenly reverts back to her killer self. The process of this split personality made absolutely no sense. The Nyu character was not endearing with her pink hair and her "cute" noises but painful and infuriating to watch.

The dialogue and writing in this anime is atrocious. We get hilarious dialogue as seen above several times through out the anime. The situations and events to explain pink haired girl's tragic past were so over the top that it was completely unbelievable and embarrassing. You can tell the writers are trying to be taken seriously with their grim dark, tragic heroine's back story but we get children who beat puppies to death, adults who knock kids over in a crowded festival then proceed to yell at them afterwards and inner monologues that make absolutely no sense. They tried to accomplish an edgy, depressing story but fail utterly in almost every aspect.

This anime is extremely graphic in both violence and nudity. In both the OP and ED there is full frontal female nudity for almost the whole 1:30 of it. In almost every episode, one of the many female characters displays their chest for all to see. Not only is it the older mature girls who get treated this way, but the younger child characters as well. All I could do was shake my head in disgust as to what I was watching. The violence was complete and utter nonsense. We have decapitations, implosions, eye ball gouging, castration, breaking bones, animal beating and pools and pools of blood. This has to be the goriest anime I have seen and none of it was entertaining in the least. It was over the top violence for violence's sake.

I think I have seen enough anime now to say that the animation in this was pretty bad. Character's mouths failed to move during some scenes where they are singing, movement was jerky and the overall aesthetic was displeasing to the eye. The pink haired mutant girls were hideous to look at and the design choice to have ruthless killers be moe has to be some sick joke. The sound design was serviceable. The voice acting was meh and the soundtrack was decent.

Interestingly enough, this show basically ended the same way Noir ended. I dont know if thats significant. It was noticeable though.

I haven't since the manga ended, although maybe I'll pick it up sometime. Then again, I said that about Gintama and I haven't felt the need to read the manga of that either... that's laziness for ya.
