Media Create Sales: Week 30, 2014 (Jul 21 - Jul 27)

So glad Level 5 found their hit. After so many good games to come from them it was only a matter of time. Hopefully they stay diversified.

As for the PS4... Ouch. Games like Puppeteer could have done wonders.

so I'm sure this will be asked a bunch from here until early 2015, but do you guys think the PS4 will just bounce back like nothing happened after stagnating for so long? I know Japanese focused games are coming but they're so few and far away that I think the damage might already be done.

It will "bounce back" almost certainly, but perhaps not as thoroughly as some would like. I mean, the PSVita has "bounced back," but that bounce is basically "bouncing back" to the PSP's bad period. In these cases "bounce back" basically just means something like "selling 50%+ better than it is now." As an example: let's say a bunch of games release on PS4 and the system doubles its average current weekly sales, and sustains that increase. I mean, yes, that's a "bounce back" in the sense that the system increased its sales by 100% YoY, but selling 10-11k per week isn't a "bounce back" in any meaningful sense.

It will "bounce back," but probably less than the PS3 did, or the PSP did. I think 8m LTD is an optimistic total, which would be fine enough on its own but is horrible for the supposed leading console of its generation.

do you know the LTD numbers for PS3 and PSP? edit: never mind :p thanks KillerMan91

and I just can't help but think Sony is fucking crazy letting the PS4 sit in limbo for that long. maybe PS4 will bounce back but damn, it's like they think it's a 100% certainty and are just taking a turnaround for granted.

?
They are on the front page as both consoles are still tracked
PSP: 20.163.366
PS3: 10.034.664

thanks haha. so the expectation is that PS4 will do worse than PS3? man that seems strange considering that the PS4 is setting the rest of the world on fire. fucking bizarro land over in Japan.

In a few years it will be getting vaguely alive numbers, don't expect much more than that.

A couple of big games like Final Fantasy will bring people to it and there will be a stream of Compile Heart RPGs and the like keeping it going. At that time it'll sell better than it is now, but not great.

~20M PSP (second place system)
~10M PS3 (second place system)

For the PS4 to fall to 8M and be the first place system would not just represent a fall for Sony (of 2M units), but a huge fall for consoles generally, when the top system of its generation can't even match the second place system from the generation prior.

Reminder: my estimation of 8M LTD is pulled directly from my butt. It's just a guess. You'll note I edited that post significantly.

Vita has be on the market long enough, where the writing is on the wall. PS4 may be doing terrible, but there's a much larger chance that it can be improved than PSV.
Where is this improvement going to come from? There are no games on the system that Japanese gamers really want until 2015 at the earliest.

How's the PS4 sales performance compared to PS3?

It's way too soon to claim that.

PS3/PS4 comparison:

Launches aligned (21 weeks):
PS4: 5.581 / 647.682 (7/21 - 7/27/2014)
PS3: 16,889 / 811,381 (3/26 - 4/1/2007)

And PS3 during the same week as this past week in 2007:
PS3: 28,829 / 1,017,689 (Hots Shots Golf 5 launch week)

Where is my HSG6 SCEJ?

.

maybe Wii U will finish first haha

I don't see that ever happening. Unless the PS4's uptick is incredibly low and the machine has a really short life cycle which seems unlikely given how PS1,2,3 have performed and received third party support.

Give it time, sales and an anime adaptation.

What about digital sales? If they did 10% of their current LTD as additional digital sales the game has sold closer to 125k already. A man can dream... I just want Sony to keep supporting the Vita and JRPGs. =(

As for the PS4... Ouch. Games like Puppeteer could have done wonders.

That really should have been the launch platformer over Knack. Puppeteer is a game that deserved better than to be sent to die.

based on absolutely nothing I could see it going either way. 1st party or 3rd party, they're all just games and right now I see the Wii U's future looking much brighter than the PS4's in Japan in that regard.

I would argue that the PSV has/had the larger chance. The PS4 is basically going to be relying on a bunch of declining series to help it sell for a few weeks followed by gaps in the schedule when it comes to games that actually sell in Japan.

Exactly this. The pricepoint is also a huge factor. Until it gets down to a more affordable price, it will be at least 2 years until we see some major improvement.

But... FFXV and KH3 are on PS4! And TLG will move to PS4!

In all seriousness, 3rd party completely saved PS3 in Japan last gen. However, this time around there is no guarantee PS4 will get all the 3rd party efforts by default even though Wii U is not getting it since mobile is the preferred market right now.

Eh. Titles PS4 will get are way bigger than anything Vita has gotten so far or will get in future. Vita doesn't have a single 500k seller. PS4 will have at least RE, MGS, FF, KH, Tales of, GTA and maybe GT that will do over 500k. Then after the sales upstick with those games and PS3 dying off slowly maybe PS4 will start to get same smaller titles as Vita and PS3 are getting now weekly( or maybe they just vanish to mobile....). Also PS4 gets all the western games there are and western games are getting more and more popular in Japan. Those should also fill a void in release schedule later this year and next year. It's just that even in west this summer has been wasteland as far as releases go.

PS4 sales will rise after some big games releases, but it will never be a hit in Japan and will never even reach PSV sales.

No the WiiU's future is looking much darker. What major titles does it have for it in the future......Smash, Zelda ,possibly Animal crossing and not to mention the release of its biggest system seller MK hasn't done much to improve sales.

Meanwhile the PS4 is guaranteed to get MGSV, FFXV, KH3, Yakuza, Tales, GTA, GT, Hot Shots, RE7, alongside support from more niche parties like GUST, Falcom, and NIS.

The only real guaranteed 500k seller on PS4 right now is probably FFXV. Also the platform's only potential million seller.

I think KH3 and maybe RE7 are likely to exceed 500k too but the rest more likely won't.

We can't say for sure whether or not PS4 can recover with the prospective titles or not. Nintendo's games were the biggest things last gen, but as we can see, they all cratered on Wii U.
However, while we know that Wii U won't gain any traction, we can't determine PS4's future until some games actually come out.

Well KH titles used to be million sellers so it would be quite drop to go sub 500k for mainline title (they just have to add Frozen characters somehow to KH and it will sell 2 million lol). MGSV is crossgen so maybe yeah it will do less than 500k on PS4. Considering insane growth GTA experienced with GTAV I have hard time to see it go back to sub 500k club. GT and Tales of could go either way. This is basically the same as last gen when people expected every franchise to sell less on PS3 than PS2 because of userbase difference. Well to some it happened (with FF I would blame the quality of the game too..) but to some it didn't (MGS, RE, Tales of)

Similarly, 3DS looks more likely to perform like PSP did (20M ballpark) than DS (33M according to Wikipedia). I know it's no surprise but cross-generation performance seems like a pretty simple and illustrative benchmark.

I should look around as I know the data is available for 2013 but I'd love to see the yearly evolution of the Japanese video game market (in value), broken down into consoles/handheld/PC/mobile and hardware/software. I have an intuition plotting it over a decade could be pretty telling.

edit: well, there's a 200 slide powerpoint from GMO floating around with a lot of data up to 2012.

Only one KH game ever sold a million in Japan and it was almost a decade ago. By the time GTA6 is ready who knows what state PS4 will be in either.

And many big PS2 franchises declined on PS3. FF, WE, SH, Musou, SRT, Star Ocean, GT, HSG, Tekken, VF, Ace Combat, and so on. Really even Tales did too, Xillia 1 was an outlier. PS4 is already tracking behind PS3, less Japanese support and western games aren't going to buck the trend here.

franchises that sold more on PS2 than PS3 >>> franchises that sold more on PS3 than PS2,.especially for big sellers. There will be further decline on PS4, it's pretty obvious now.

wow

Wii U is now 1.2 million ahead of PS4 and that gap will have grown significantly after the holiday season - in which I expect good sales for Wii U with Mario Kart and Smash Bros available. At this rate, and there's no games to really stop the trend, PS4 will not be close to a million sold in Japan by the end of the year.

I would guess that we'll start seeing second and third tier Japanese console games, althougn there are not that many anymore, being released on both PS4 and Wii U or maybe even just on Wii U. Niche games like Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta and Fatal Frame will help there.

For sure PS4 will see a couple of massive bumps because of MGS, FF and RE, but it may well be 2016 before we see any of these. All three might be end 2016 or even 2017. By then I already expect the new Nintendo system to be close to releasing.

It looks like the Wii U could overtake the PS3 YTD again (briefly?) in MC. It's getting close for what it's worth.

| WIU | 9.429 | 8.209 | 11.373 | 323.076 |
| PS3 | 7.175 | 7.389 | 11.900 | 324.990 |

I mean that If anyone has a chance of releasing another handheld with the current landscape I think it would be Nintendo. I can't see Sony doing another one. The vita is doing okay in Japan and failing everywhere else. The 3DS is fairing a lot better in every territory compared to the Vita.

I am sure the Vita is a money hole for them along with Vita TV.
Do you think that Sony wont see any potential in that market though? Even if its just Japan. That is basically what it comes down to, that they would say "we dont have any idea how to make money in that sector".

The reason for the bump for Mario Kart 8 might be people grabing it before the free game deal ends. I think that just ended a couple of days ago.

That deals ends tomorrow actually, so we'll see one more week of what its effect is. The Japan deal for MK8 kind of sucks too imo (compared to the free game that the US & EU gets, they get some weird trial period), so I'd expect to see less of a drop in sales, but we'll see.
