Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

Except you're talking about SE's history, we're talking about Crystal Dynamics, originally through Eidos I believe. It's a bit different if you're a Tomb Raider fan.

I am a Tomb Raider fan, all the way back to the first on PSOne and the second on PC and the reboot on PC...

As with that new Insomniac game: they've lost a sale that would have been day one. Now I'll play it... Eventually, probably when I get a $249 xbone and these games are bargain bin.

Even she gets bombarded with tweets :D

I want to protect her.

Wow, pretty shocking. Something tells me this is an Uncharted competition scheme.

Pretty much this. All and all, Forza Horizon has been created as a direct competitor to DC. They bombarded with words like social integration, clubs and the 'best social racing game ever'. I do think that competition is good but copying a game or in this case, buying exclusivity deals to have a direct competitor to Uncharted is lame and should not be applauded.

Edit: I meant Horizon 2.

The scorn in this thread is quite amusing.

MS was going to get deadly serious about exclusives at some point to protect their huge investment, particularly so early in the race. That it took them this long is the only thing surprising about this.

I can't believe people raging over a distant sequel for a mediocre game being X1 exclusive.

It was NeoGaf's #8 game of the year last year in what was quite frankly, a really stacked year for games. It's fine to be upset that the game may be a timed exclusive but let's not act like it's 'mediocre'.

I call only speak for myself, ergo, this is my opinion on what is a very trivial matter in the end. I have a PS4 and I have no problem with a game being an exclusive on either console. Sunset Overdrive is an X1 exclusive, fine. If I want to play that game, I'll buy an Xbox. That game was defined as an exclusive from the beginning.
The thing that bothers me with TR is that it was first announced as a multiplatform title. Now, if I want to play the game I have no other choice but to buy an Xbox (considering it really is an absolute exclusive and not a timed one). Basically, Microsoft is aggressively trying to “force me” to buy their console if I want to play a game that was once announced as being multiplatform and that they bought. It’s tactics, but cheap tactics.
I had a PS3 and a 360. I could not care less about brands. I could have bought an X1 for Sunset Overdrive, but, I won’t because I don’t like the strategy Microsoft is using. What was done by them with FFXIII going multi was clever and it didn’t lock down things, it opened the “game”.
This, is the other way around, it is a coercive measure.
So in a nutshell, if TR was announced from the start as an exclusive, I wouldn’t object, but seeing as it was first a multiplatform game, it bothers me. In the end I don't even think it helps them.
BUT, ultimately, I think that this is a timed exclusive :)

I can't comprehend fans of the franchise being disappointed about a sequel of a reboot that butchered the series being exclusive to one platform.

I agree and that's why i WISH it to be a lifetime exclusive.A big flop is the only way Crystal Dynamics gets removed from the franchise.

The Lara Croft spin-offs are far closer to the classic Tomb Raider formula than the shitty reboot ever was.

I never played the first spin-off but it just seemed like a top down shooter. Not exactly what the classics were.

There's a Tomb Raider for PlayStation fans. It's called Osiris.

Yup, sounded exactly like that. Really insulting.

I have all Tomb Raiders (well, my dad has) and this is just disappointing.

Obviously I won't buy a Xbox One for this so I guess I'll save 60 bucks. Uncharted will probably suffice if I want to play an adventure game with my dad.

Will wait for the PS4 version but good for Microsoft going after something. Sucks for fans on other platforms but I'm sure this was a good business decision for Square/Microsoft.

Yupyup. His initial tweet was correct, though. MS isn't publishing. And the fact that they're giving someone that could easily be considered the most notable journalist in this particular field the runaround makes me think it's a very complex situation.

Yea I do think it's a bit complex otherwise there wouldn't be so much confusion over something as simple as who is publishing. That said, Microsoft might be trying to do their usual PR speak and is just fucking up spectacularly in this case.

Well, bit of a shame as a PS4 owner, but can't hate Microsoft for it. They need exclusives like this to prop the systems desirability. Not like PS4 fans won't have Uncharted 4 in the mean time.

If it isn't a temporal exclusive, RIP Tomb Raider and Crystal Dynamics. If Square wasn't too happy with the sales of the previous one, I doubt this would sell more in a single platform. But well, at least it will help a bit XBO sales.

That might work on Kickstarter, where developers ask for fans money upfront and often in quantities much larger than 60 bucks a pop to CREATE the game in teh first place, but I don't think Square-Enix or Crystal Dynamics can afford to go the hobo with a change cup route being as big as they are.

i was under the impression the game was in no danger of being canceled.
You're assuming Microsoft funded the game and not just secured exclusivity.

Yeah, but it's not going to help them this holiday.

Yeah, I'm starting to think this might be a full exclusive. The only thing I find strange, is the wording of the announcement. But what I said earlier about the cost, and other things, kind of falls apart under more examination.

Sigh.

A bit of a shame, I was looking forward to it. Desperate times and all that. Hopefully the wording is like that for a reason.

I see well that disappointing. So I miss out on Rise of the Tomb Raider whatever there's plenty of other games I can enjoy. For you Xbox One owners out there enjoy the newest Tomb Raider.

This is crap...

I have both systems, just so I can play exclusives, but there is no way I am buying this.

You have exclusives that are made in house.

You have exclusives, like the recent Sunset Overdrive, where the developer gets to keep control of their product, so staying on one system makes sense.

You have exclusives, like Bayonetta 2, where one of the big companies helps fund the game which would have never been made otherwise.

With all of these I have no problem buying the game and is the reason I own all the major systems.

Then you have crap like this where one company pays to keep the game off other systems. This is complete anti-consumer shit. This is not helping the gamer. This is not creating exciting content for your fans. This is not making me want to support your company by hiring the most talented artist in the industry and giving them a chance to wow me. This is 100% complete mafia bullshit of taking out all competition and leaving me one single choice.

fuck you I am not supporting this...

Neither does Microsoft, Geoff or Square.

No one knows if it is a timed exclusive or who is the publisher.

Clusterfuck all around.

They know, but they do not want to say. Saying up front "this is a timed exclusive" would be like throwing money out the window for MS.
However due to the pressure they might actually admit it, which would be funny.

MS is a really stupid, clueless company if they did not realize what would moneyhatting this game cause (not an increase in Xbone sales!). Kinda like they were stupid to realize that Xbox One would get shorthanded as Xbone.

I can't believe there's this much of a blow-up over Tomb Raider, the reboot that wasn't anything like the original games.

I understand going this crazy on this because it's a third party series that was multiplatform before (and literally was just a year ago). I get that. But blowing up this much just seems a little overboard to me when looking at what game it is that people are getting upset over. We've not even seen any gameplay of it to even know whether it's good or going to live up to what most TR fans even want.

Cool down a bit.

The principle behind MS funding it to be exclusive at all is shitty, not much else I can say until more of the game is shown.

The hoi polloi. It's why we can't have nice things.

Very sad people.

Stupid people can tweet too, it's been around for ages.

People who can't come to grips with the announcement.

Yeah, I forgot how stupid/dark the internet can be. It just astounds me that people would be so daft about it.

It's been rumoured
just right now as I'm making this up
that she brokered the deal between Square-Enix and Microsoft. She's cunning and nefarious.

No wonder it's called Rise of the Tomb Raider! It's the dark middle chapter where Lara begins her villainy!

Yea I do think it's a bit complex otherwise there wouldn't be so much confusion over something as simple as who is publishing. That said, Microsoft might be trying to do their usual PR speak and is just fucking up spectacularly in this case.

And Crystal Dynamics is getting dragged along with them, and they can't do shit about it. Ugh. Microsoft's really got to figure out things on a PR level.

I liked the TR reboot well enough, but not NEARLY enough to justify buying a new console to play the next one. I'm sure I'm not alone.

Same this was a shocking announcement for me. My friend who loved playing the reboot on PC is pissed as hell about this, really hope this is a timed exclusive. Seems odd to kill the momentum of your rebooted franchise by alienating large swaths of your audience. That had to have been one big check from MS. Anyway grats to MS for dominating the Gamescom talk about the xbone, the announcement did what it was designed to

Wait, Forza Horizon, a spin off to the Forza series that came out in 2012 was created to be a direct competitor to DriveClub, a game that has yet to release?

That's some serious future planning right there, and I'd say it's working out for Xbox.
